@Shivathmika

That is what I was trying to exemplify by quoting gautama buddha. He sat for dhyana not because of his chance intuition that sitting under a tree will get him enlightened but because of the knowledge that he got when he practised under various spiritual gurus before sitting for dhyana.

Any child isn't born a yogi. He first gains knowledge of right and wrong and then more. Without the basics nobody can gain consciousness because he wouldn't know where to start with. And these books are a form of guidance.

Scientists working on quantum physics are equally curious about the nature of reality as any other spiritual person. But can they achieve enlightenment without proper guidance in their birth life ?

Out of the 5 koshas quoted, reading scriptures comes under vigyanamaya kosha. This provides a person a sense of direction in the path of enlightenment.

Yes but just studying will not get a person to enlightenment. But if will surely get him to higher consciousness. There is always a threshold value needed to clear to be free from this material world which a human can only cross by implementing things in his own life and not just by studying.

An average person born in saudi arabia with no link to spirituality will never be able to gain enlightenment in his life (not talking about exceptions) . But what he can do is be curious about everything- his beliefs, his culture etc. So that in the next birth he will be born in a more spiritually-inclined environment than his previous one's. Similar is the case of everyone.

Yes reading books alone will not contribute to consciousness. It will depend on the motive of reading- whether its to realize something or just to appease God and get his blessings for materialistic pleasures.
If a person is reading scriptures to because he is longing to realize the truth then that will contribute to consciousness. Reading books and introspecting from within what is right or wrong and not taking and believing everything on the face value will contribute to consciousness.
If you don't agree with this then we both have reached our individual standpoints on this topic.
