What is your openion on Retrograde planet aspects.. As per K N Rao Sir, Retrograde planet will have 6 aspects. 3 as from its house and 3 from the previous house which it is residing..
Look when a Planet like shani for example now.....is retrograding enough......from Libra Jhora automatically puts it back in Virgo.
Then you take the aspects from Virgo....... and not as if in Leo (also).

Actually I have found absolutely no verifiability in taking the aspects from the house before.

Dear all,

I wanted to know how retrograde planets differ in their effects from "normal" planets? Do they cause opposite effects or do they cause delay in their effects or is it something else?
And if malefic planets are retrograde, is that a good sign, because they are in opposite motion, or do they become even more malefic?

regards,
Retrogradation acts at 3 levels...

1) The signification of the house where the planet sits......this is improved / strengthened always when a planet is retrogradefor the hosue where it sits .
Because retrogradation gives a planet FULL points for cheshta bala ( motional strength) 60 out of 60 hence making it stronger in shadbala and hence overall positive significations that the planet will generate from the house where they sit and rule, especially during it;s dasas and anataras

2) at the planetary karkatwas level and here it has been noticed:

a) Retrograde inner planets ( Me , Ma and Ve) make the person defficient. For example retrograde Me might make the person appear dull/ seemingly low intellect/ academically challanged
b) retrograde Venus might make the persons appear naive / cold / clueless in handling human relationshipsn especially with the opposite sex.
c) mars makes the person irritable/ aggressive, low in pateince and perseverance.
d) while outer planets Sat, Jup give the person a unique advantage in their karakatwas...sat--> exceptional discipline, organization., responsibility self-scarifice, wanting to serve others
and Jup--> exceptional intellct/ ability to see other's POV, ability to decipher scriptures unconvetional wisdom.

3) At the Karmik level.....it indicates a back-log......the person's karmik baggage is related more so to thsoe planets and an analysis of D60 most likely will reveal the retrograde planets as the key players involved in Karmik balance.

4) Sun, Moon don't go retrograde and Ra-Ket ( karmik planets) are always retrograde...so these don;t count in retrogradation unlike the otehr 5 planets

so in summary retrogradation acts at multiple levels for all planets and diffrently for inner and outer planets....and for eg. if a person has a retrograde Mercury in the 4th house whihc is Virgo( exalted)....he/she may be slow is eductaions/ not very intellecuatl and yet will enjoy all 4th house significations such as vehicles, good house to live in happy and plenty supprot from other and an overall good home environment.

Hi Shilpa,

Well my Mercury is retrograde and is in the 4th house sitting with ketu. You are right I have had intervals in my studies it hasnt been a constant journey. My mercury Maha dasha starts in Dec 2012 and will be there for 17 years. Can you throw light on how it could affect me during this MD and AD.

My Mercury is also combust.

Dear Fluid2finance,

Following on your example below, what happens if the planet is retrograde in the natal chart?
Do you think it would still give bad results while it is retrograde in transit or does it get reversed?

I have Guru and Shani retrograde and conjunct in Virgo in my chart. (Taurus lagna - so Shani is a YK and Guru a functional malefic).
In my experience, they have given strong results as far as some general karakatwas are concerned (like scriptural teaching, discipline etc). but have not quite seen them deliver any other material results really (Just finished Guru AD and now on Shani AD).

An astrologer once told me that Guru gives Shani's effects and Shani gives Guru's effects when they are conjunct. I found that Guru gave his house effects (House 8 only though) during his AD (although in harsh ways, perhaps in the style of Shani).
Hi Shilpa,

A nice reply

I have seen in my experience (17 years in astro research now) that the outer retrograde planets can protect their significations or strengthen the houses they own, however, their dashas can at times give very unexpected results, many a times very negative

In transit, I have seen that retrogression is usually never good. Especially of the malefic planets Saturn and Mars.

Also one effect which I have observed without fail is that a retrograde planet in transit kind of "Stays" the effects it has in the house. In other words, issues go into background or just stick around till the planet is retrograde.

So lets say saturn is in Virgo in someone's 11th house. It will tend to give very good effects being 11th from moon or lagna. But during its retrogression, the effects go on hold. Doesnt mean they become bad, just go on hold till it becomes straight again. ALso during this hold period other planets will more easily over ride the effects of saturn and give their own good or bad effects

now the same saturn for an Aquarius rashi will tend to give highly adverse effects being 8th from the rashi.
During retrogression, these negative effects will be on hold. Again it wont become a good period, just that the negative effects will be on hold. So if during the retrogression, the dasha is good and other heavier transits are helpful like Jupiter and Rahu, then the effect will be good overall

As soon as saturn becomes direct, it will exert its good/ bad effects as usual.
Hi Shilpa,

I want to comment on your post-
a) Retrograde inner planets ( Me , Ma and Ve) make the person defficient. For example retrograde Me might make the person appear dull/ seemingly low intellect/ academically challanged
I have a chart where the person with merc retro , is absolutely brilliant. He has multiple degree including from IIT & IIM's.

If a retro planet is occupying very low degrees of a sign will it give effects as if it were placed in the previous sign since it moves backwards. eg: if retro jupiter is in aries in 7th house between 0-1 degree will it give effects as if it was placed in pisces in 6th house?

Wow, very good explanation about retrograde planets and I am amazed to read about the karakatuvas of outer planets like Saturn and Jupiter since I it fits me 100% accurately.

Thanks a lot for this post.

What if a retrograde exalted planet is placed in the lagna of a divisional chart which is actually The Lord of that particular house in Rasi chart? Will it still be beneficial for the house significations?

Say for example when an exalted retro Saturn is placed in the lagna of D7 , which is actually The Lord of 5th house in rasi chart, what should we consider then?

The only thing I can confirm about retro planets is that they make a person introspective/inward looking. The more planets retrograde in a chart the more common this trait. Also repetition of efforts to achieve results another common trait(chesta bala) The rest about aspects I have never been able to verify.

what could be the effect of Retro Saturn in 11th for Libra Lagna ,,, as discussed in forum being an outer planet its retrogration could save the strength of the house. However in the dasa of Rahu - Satrun ... (both in 11th ) I am having worst results.

Also as per dictum in old scriptures ,, an exalted retro planet works like a neech planet , Can this be deviced that while a planet being retro would give the result of its opposite rashi ?

Please enlighten .
