Hi Learned Members

Now BPHS says that D-45 can be read like an overall chart. But it has to tie in with Rasi more than even say, Navamsa. That still ties in with the fact that it can be read like an overall chart. BPHS NEVER says to read it independently.

Now BPHS is silent about D-40.

From the sources I have read, D-40 is used for seeing prospects of an invidual, to find out the indivudal's quality of life (more so than even D-4 because D-4 only pertains to fixed assets and all that and last but not least, D-40 is used to time transits and from what I found out Dasa periods as well (actually transit and dasas both deal with timing so they are quite related, the astrological world mostly used transit under dasa but as C S Patel shows transits system (Ashtakavarga) has a status on its own for character delineation).

What all this means is that although D-40 cannot be read as an overall chart, it can be read as an independent chart but only pertaining to general prospects and quality of life ie. rivetting up of GENERAL MATERIALITY of a person. (You take 40 divided by 12 and the kaya house is the 4th house just like D-4).

Such is the world of Vedic Astrology in terms of complicated parlance. One has to do some deciphering.

Let's have a look at my D-40 chart.

Birth details :

22nd June 1962
8:32 am
Singapore 1 degree 17 minutes north Latitude
103 degrees 51 minutes east Longtitude
GMT 7 hours 30 minutes East
(Only in 1 Jan 1983 GMT changd to 8 hours East for Singapore).

Let's start by using the Planets as an Ascendant System first. But we consider on the goal of reading the prospects in my life instead of character analysis which comes under D-1 Rasi chart.

I have never in need of want in my life. I am not wealthy but never in want. 2nd to Venus ruling money ties in with my 11th to Jupiter in gains falls on my Lagna in D-40. 4th to Mars also falls on the same point dealing with fixed assets.

Sun deals with the government and it falls under 12th to Venus and 9th to Jupiter (9th to Jupiter can be considered also as a higher octave of the 11th to Jupiter by Bhavat Bhavam principle). Government jobs are the ones that give me prosperity and fortune. 2nd to Mars also ties in here. My blood relations are prosperous and fortunate.

7th to Mercury rules business and Jupiter sits there. Jupiter rules my money point (2nd to Venus) and my wealth point (2nd to Moon) in this chart.

It is important to see your Lagna Lord in this chart to guage how materiality benefits you.

My Moon sits with Mercury in Scorpio in the 9th and Moon rules the 5th house in this chart (Scorpio is on the 5th house in D-1 Rasi a trinal house by the way so no bad effects carried over from the D-1 Rasi chart for the 9th house in this chart). Mercury rules 2nd to Jupiter which denotes wealth. Moon rules 3rd to Jupiter which also denotes wealth by the Bhavat Bhavam principle. The other point which Mercury rules is where Saturn sits - the sign of Virgo. Saturn also rules money points in this chart. It rules 12th to Venus (where the Sun sits) and Rahu is there which also rules Gemini a wealth point. And Ketu rules where Moon+Mercury is sitting which is also a money point (I will come to that later). Saturn where it is placed denotes healthiness - so the money aspect is healthy.

Saturn, Rahu and Ketu are all 11th from Moon and the 11th from Sun is Scorpio and again ruled by Ketu which is with Saturn. So the place where Saturn sits is also a gains point. Also the 11th from Moon is ruled by Mercury which is stationed at the 11th from Sun. So the point where Moon and Mercury are together is a gains point.

Saturn, Rahu and Ketu are all 9th from Sun ruled by Mercury and the 9th from Moon is Cancer which is ruled by Moon. Moon and Mercury are together so this point is a fortune point.

And my Lagna Lord the Moon is involved in all this.

The place where Mars sits is my wealth point (2nd to Moon) and another prosperity point (11th from Venus - 11th is the 12th of the 12th by Bhavat Bhavam principle). Where Saturn sits is also my fortune point (5th to Jupiter which is the 9th to the 9th by Bhavat Bhavam principle). This point happens also to be the 8th of Venus - something valuable which you own.

From this you can see that all my money points are all intermingled creating a tight network.

What about the prospect of going into the field of writing?

You can see Mercury with Moon and Jupiter lying on the 3rd-9th axis. Since Mercury is weak in the presence of the Moon, gathering of facts is a problem. But the Moon's imagination is strong and supported by Mercury so the gathering of facts though weak, the mind creatively makes use of what facts it has. Jupiter opposing this pair adds to the quality of the writing.

In this way you can also see the various prospects to go into in this chart.

Usually your dreams will be fulfilled when the appropriate dasa periods or the appropriate transits occur. I give more emphasis to dasa periods though and transits sually must support dasas. But like I said, sometimes transits alone can work as well especially the transits of Jupiter+Saturn as we all know.

I hope the above has given you a flavour on how to use D-40

Hi

Just to share another interesting point with you.

If you look at my D-45, my Moon the Lagna Lord is in the 12th house. I lead quite a secluded life, this means. But the d-40 above is in the 9th house which shows leading a contemplative life.

So the conclusion is I will be leading a (secluded + contemplative) life.

So we can also do analysis of the person's life of D40 and D-45 together but remember the different techniques used in the analysis of each of the chart. Example D-40 the effects are felt during Dasa of the relevant planets and for D-45 it has to tie in with D-1 rulership, things like that.

Note that D-40 can also be used for prospects for non-material things like getting a spouse since it deals with QUALITY OF LIFE. But of course in this modern day of ours, a large portion of our quality of life is defined by our ability to command material abundance.

Hi

Lest readers get the notion that the effects of D-40 are not permanent and that it operates only during the dasa period, this is not so.

Some times the dasa can signify the KICKING IN or BEGINNING of some aspect of the planet placement in D-40 but once the dasa is over, the effects CAN BE PERMANENT.

Hi

After some time studying Vedic Astrology, I find that ALL divisional charts can be read independently, so that is why recently I have a post on using Vimsottari Dasa at the divisional chart level ie. see the Moon's position at that divisional chart and take Vimsottari Dasa from that position.

The correspondence with Rasi is meant more to strengthen one's prospects in that area promised by that divisional chart because Rasi governs all physical manifestations. But sometimes if a divisional chart is VERY GOOD, one can overwrite Rasi Chart's prognostication. So divisional charts can be read independently.

In the case of looking at D40 in relation to transits (see my 1st post in this thread, can be used for timing for dasa OR transit OR dasa plus transit - all are acceptable), the transit is in relation to D40 since we are reading it independently.

In one of my posts under the Section Planets and Nakshatras, I mentioned that transits in divisional charts one can use the J Hora Transit Facility to see the planetary transit positions at any one time for a particular divisional chart - just choose that divisional chart and invoke the transit of planets feature.

Based on what I just read, the ONLY TIME when one has to refer to Rasi when reading a dvisional chart is under THREE CIRCUMSTANCES :

(1) Lord of the Divisional Chart
(2) Ascendant Lord in D-1
(3) Significator of the Divisional Chart lie Jupiter for D-7 and Venus for D-9 etc.

All others you can read the divisional chart independently. If the divisonal chart shows that it can give good results but not the natal chart, the reading of the divisonal chart still prevails EXCEPT FOR THE THREE READINGS ABOVE.

Also Lagna of the divisonal chart if placed in the 8th house of D-1 or D-9 (the Navamsa), that divsional chart would suffer.

Also if one want to go one step further to see the goodness of a dvisional chart, besides the basic consideration stated above, all the significators in D-1 which have a necessary impact on that divisonal chart can be read. Here the book does not say whether they are talking about natural significators or functional ruler significators. In my opinion it cannot be natural significators since this is already take care of by the basic consideration above.

Therefore it must be functional ruler significators. So if Jupiter rules the 7th house in Rasi Chart, Jupiter is the functional ruler significator of wife in D-9 besides Venus the natural significator in D-9. So Jupiter's position in D-9 should also be considered.

Thus conclude the basic premises in reading the divisional chart.

Just read something about D40 and D45 from the book also. Readers can test out whether my above interpretation is correct or the book for eg. Vic DiCara does use D45 independently but the book as some other consideration to tie with Rasi. Similarly the book has some other consideration to tie in D40 with the Rasi Chart even though earlier on I said no need. Readers can test out which two opposing set of dicta is correct - the book or the one from this thread.

Here are the quotes.

D40
----

Khawedansh Chart reveals benefic and malefic influence of planets resulting in good and bad time or auspicious and inauspicious effects of the horoscope in general. The learned astrologers believe that if malefic combinations are observed in Rasi Chart these should be confirmed from Trinshansh and Khawedansh Charts as well. If these charts don't subscribe to the views then it should be treated as Arishta Bhang or cancellation of evil effects of malefic combination in Rasi Chart.

D45
----

Akshvedansh shows general happiness and prosperity of the native. This is used as a confirmatory test of indications given in the natal chart, by planetary configuration.

Notice the book said to use the D45 to confirm what is promised by the Rasi Chart by looking at the planetary configuration of the planets in D45 meaning look at an overall picture like the quality of the yoga which the planet participates in or the general dispositorship pattern etc.

Another book mentioned thus about D40 :

It should be studied for mental peace at working place
and indications of good and bad periods depending
on past Karmas of maternal lineage.

To study the above effects, we should study 4th &
lOth house and their lords· with Moon & Saturn as
Karaka.

Thus this book places more emphasis on the indepent study of the D40 without tying to the Rasi Cahrt.

This second book went on to say in the summary :

L This chart is extremely useful to study the benefic or
malefic effects of the planetary periods.
2, Main or sub-period lords, if weak or ill-disposed in D-
40 chart, may prove inauspidous and give physical &
mental agony to a native,
3. Planets which are strong and under benefic influences
in 0·1 & 0-40 charts, often give peace, pleasure and
prosperity to the native,

Thus this second book still advocates reading the D40 chart independently based on point (2). But for great auspicious results, the periods of the said good planets should also be good in Rasi Chart as evidenced in point (3).

So this second book gives D40 somewhat an independent stauts.

In this second book's semi-indepment method for interpretation of D40 results, note that even if one were only to see D-40 only and ignore Rasi ie. we choose this method rather than tie iwth Rasi, the triggering is always transit at the Rasi Chart level.

If you think logically, it is okay to use Vimsottari Dasa at the divisional chart level. But transits should be at the Rasi Chart Level when doing individual chart analysis - unlike say transits for triggering of mundane affairs. That is why you have Navamsa Tulya Rasi, the transit positions in Rasi is superimpose on the Navamsa, for example.

So take transits only at the Rasi Chart only.

Ok, I cam across a classic which mention the Moon travelling through 108 Navamsas. This means one can actually consider transits at the divisional chart level without ONLY resorting to superimposing transits from the Rasi chart level like Navamsa Tulya Rasi.

This means transits at d40 level works as well but noticeably the transits wuld jump through the signs quickly as D40 is quite a fine division.

But bear in mind what I said above. We can read D40 independently or tie in with the Rasi for BETTER results. So D40 reading is somewhat semi-independent from Rasi Chart in that you can do it either way.

So, for example Chapter 54 of Yavana Jataka of Sphudidhvaja mentioned that if good planets are placed in Cardines (kendras) but :

They say that the good or bad results of these (yogas) depend on the entry (of the planet) into a
navamsa of the sign. In the odd signs the benefit planets, even if not aspected by malefic planets,
become malefic when they are in apacaya places from the signs they occupied in the nativity.

This means you get the transit position at the Navamsa Chart level rather than Navamsa Tulya Rasi
(use J Hora to do it) and then see how that sign is in relation to the kendra sign the planet is in in the Rasi Chart. If it is Apachya (meaning not Uppachaya), they can become malefic even if they are benefics not aspected by malefic planets.

For a list of all the planets' positions in all the 4 kendras, see Chapter 54 of Yavana Jataka of Sphudidhvaja.
