Writing,
The planet controlling your sons 10th house of career is Mercury, the communicator. Mercury is placed in the 5th house of creative self expression in the sign of capricorn, and it's retrograde, making the power of Mercury internal, reflective, powerful, and critical.
The 5th house is 8th from the 10th. 8th house represents death and rebirth. These people have trouble holding jobs in corporations, or large organizations, they will face sudden ups and downs in those environments. However, people with 10th lord in the 5th house can do very well when they work independently, as freelancers. Writing can be a very independent job,
Essentially, it's important that ones work is a little risky. This risk can occur in many different forms, not just freelancing.
His first lord of self is also ruled by mercury, indicated his general inclinations are 5th house things, e.g. fun, games, creative communication, self expression, college education.
His 2nd lord of wealth is ruled by venus, indicating a creative career. The second lord is also occupied by rahu, this will give a lot of the strength and stability needed to pursue an independent type career.
In his D10 chart, where we look for career, Ascendant lord venus is in the 9th house in the sign of gemini. Gemini, is an immediate indication of a writer, venus will show someones love and inclination. 10th lord is ruled by moon, in the sign of Virgo in his 12th house conjunct Ketu. Virgo is also an indicator of writers as it's also ruled by mercury. Ketu will give him creativity, especially in the 12th house. This position also puts Rahu in the 6th house of critical analysis (aka editing)
To be completely honest, the D10 indicates both mechanical engineering and/or writing. He would likely be good at both.
However, I personally would say there is more of an inclination towards creativity and writing, rather than critical thinking and science.

While there is a tendency to want to escape reality, and depression, I personally do not see these things to be life threatening at all. The best way for you too ease his stress is to leave him be, but make sure he stays disciplined. Remember staying on top of studies, duties, etc is learned not inherent.
Encourage his writing as well.
