Dear Jhanak,
While browsing old messages on this forum, I found this post of yours which I consider a gem ! Thank you very much and keep up the good work.
Best regards,

Jhanak's post:
"As there are different opinions about mathematical calculations, the best placements for Rahu and Ketu, the efficiency of yogas and on and on, even after reading different classics you will still have to decide for yourself whose opinion is correct. Every astrology teacher who has an opinion swears that it is based on his experience. You have to find your own way.
Another important point to remember is that Jyotish is a metaphysical subject hence an oral tradition. This means that whatever knowledge is given in the texts is hidden and cryptic. It is not for everyone to learn. Gurus did not want to give out their knowledge to every Tom, frack, and Harry. In ancient times gurus gave metaphysical knowledge to disciples who proved their worth. Jyotish was taught orally from master to disciples, not from book to student.
Now if you are well-trained in Jyotish and if you examine most classics, you will conclude that the authors have little intention of sharing their interpretive knowledge. These books teach us the mathematical calculations and general techniques openly. But the interpretive knowledge is given in a very peculiar and fairly unusable manner. If you take interpretive information and use it in a literal fashion, you will sound foolish. This means that the ancient authors did not want every ignorant soul on earth to have access to the profound knowledge of Jyotish. You have to use the interpretive information with an awareness of the real intention of the rishis. Their intention was to give out knowledge in such a way that would weed out the uninformed. It’s somewhat like the way Christ spoke in parables.
Here are two examples from Phaladeepika.
1) “If Mars be in the 2nd house, the person concerned will be adverse or ugly faced, devoid of learning and wealth, and will be dependent on bad people.
2) “If Saturn should be posited in the 5th house, the person born will be roaming about, will have lost his reason, will be bereft of children, wealth, and happiness.â€
Thank you Jhanak for a gem of a post

Hi
Want to add another idea in relation to this post.
Rahu in he 6th House with Jupiter Angular gives the Six-Fold Prosperity Yoga. The condition that Jupiter be Angular can also be interpreted as (besides being Angular to Lagna) angular to the Moon. If Moon is conjuncting Rahu all the better - for prosperity that is.
With the additional conditions of a Cancer Ascendant with Jupiter (a trinal lord) conjuncting Ketu (another trinal lord) in the 12th, this greatly increses the prosperity of this Yoga. The two nodes are also in mutual Nakshatra reception. One of the members in this forum has all these conditions.
Without the additonal interpretation of Jupiter being angular to the Moon, it would be difficult to tell that this particular Yoga is applicable to the person. As it is, the person is hugely successful in life.
Thanks.

Hi,
I think Koo is referring to me....
I found this on ashtalakshmi yoga:
the Eightfold Prosperity ( Ashta Laksmi Yoga ). If the North Node (Rahu) is in the 6th house and if Jupiter is in Kendra house (quadrant) from birth-lagna, Ashta Lakshmi Yoga is formed whose symbols are the Eight Lakshmis : 1) Dhana Lakshmi - Wealth as prosperity. (2) Dhanya Lakshmi - Agriculture as prosperity; 3) Dhairya Lakshmi - Courage ". (4) Vijaya Laksmi - Victory " 5) Adi Laksmi - Power " (6) Vidya Laksmi Learning " 7) Gaja Lakshmi Will Power " (8) Santhana Lakshmi Children as prosperity. Rahu and Jupiter should be powerful, however, to confer the full benefits of this yoga.
Of these, I would say I have 1,3,4,5,6,and 7. In today's world Id remove the agricultural stuff (I owned land at one time and may do so again) but add health/sanity. Ive seen too many sick/crazy people to discount their value in the enjoyment of life....
Also-I think much depends on the context. In the example I saw quoted of ashta lakshmi yoga, the writer said the holder of the yoga was a high school teacher and her husband an associate professor at a college in Eluru. I do not wish to knock Eluru or, indeed, teaching high school, but I work and have worked at VASTLY better institutions all my life, at levels of responsibility a lot higher than teaching high school. Apparently they are millionaires, which I am not, but I AM comfortably off-no complaints there- and if we were talking rupees I would be a multi-millionaire. So-do I really have ashtalakshmi yoga or not? Compared to 99.9% of Indian women, I am in the top 0.1%, so what does that mean?

Hi
Another subtle interpretation is that of the Five Great Persons Yoga where the planets are placed in its own house in an angular sign.
If that planet is placed opposite that house where its sign is (and hence therefore the planet is still angular) that planet can also be considered a weaker form of the above said Yoga.
Thanks.

Hi
Extending the theme in th context of this post further, in BPHS they classify the houses as follows :
1st, 5th and 9th (+) in increasing order
2nd, 12th and 8th (0) in increasing strength but all classified as neutral
1st, 4th, 7th, 10th (0) in increasing strength but all calssified as neutral
But as all my posts in the forum show on houses :
(1) Mix and match between different categories by common lordship can actually pinpoint which house can be more powerful than another in another category. (Strength of a house is determined by the House to House Principle which is also mentioned in BPHS but not applied to the above simple classification to come up with a more classification).
Also BPHS just mentioned that any trinal lords are benefical irregardless of the other house which the planet rules, but the detailed derivation is not done. Using the House to House principle, I showed why trinal houses are all powerful.
(2) Although BPHS mentioned within each category which house is the most powerful, but strength of the house based on the mix and match across categories reveal that sometimes the ranking within the cateogry can change. So 5th house is powerful when combined with the 12th for a Gemini Ascendant instead of 9th combined with the 12th.
(3) For angular houses, 10th is considered the most powerful. But that is because BPHS (and other classics) is arguing from the base up. The objective is to show that the 10th house is the ultimate dsplay of power resulting from the propping structure of the Earth Houses (2nd and 6th) and the 1st and 7th house of internal self and external consciousness.
If you argue from the base down ie. using the House to House principle starting from the 10th, you find the seat of intelligence is Lagna. Other references in BPHS also shows Lagna is all powerful or to put it anoher way the ultimate seat of power.
Thus a lot of the material in Vedic Astrology, you have to read between the lines - the subject of this post.
Thanks.
