I have always wondered about a particular combination in my natal chart. With Leo being the ascendant, I have jupiter in the 4th house (scorpio), moon in the 8th house (pieces) and sun in 12th house (cancer). Jupiter, moon and sun all are in trinal positions from each other and are placed in water signs. Again sun, moon and jupiter all are in the nakshatras of saturn. Saturn is placed in the third house libra under the nakshatra of mars. Mars is in 11th and obtains vargottama.
I always wanted to know the significance of it. In the western astrology, this would be somewhat treated as a grand trine in water signs. In vedic astrology, I never found much discussion about such combinations except the mention of "trilochana yoga" by Dr. B.V. Raman in his "300 important combinations". However Trilochana Yoga involved the combination of mars, moon and sun being placed in trinal positions from each other.
If required, my birth details are as follows
dob - 30th July 1983
pob - kolkata, India
tob - 6:55 am
I would greatly appreciate if anyone please shed some light on this
Thanks and regards

Trilochana means having that instinctive ability to predict the near future events, people with this yoga don't necessarily become astrologers but its a highly useful skill when you have to make critical choices at workplace.
Planets in mutual trines are always an added advantage, but in any chart you have to understand the relationship between ascendant lord and other planets - this way you will get to understand what planets are trying to tell you. In your chart the greatest enemy of the ascendant lord is exalted where as the ascendant lord himself is weakly positioned. Friends of the Ascendant (moon and Jupiter) are under the influence of that enemy.
Obviously, Saturn badly wants to teach a lesson here. This is my take on your chart.
Normally, Leo natives do very well if Saturn is weakly positioned in the 9th, provided the Sun is well placed.

Thanks a lot for the analysis. I just wanted to ask a quick question. I have actually benefitted from mercury dasha and saturn bhukti, during which I was able to secure scholarship to pursue PhD in US. In august 2010, I had to come to a foreign nation leaving my motherland and family behind and this could well be viewed as someting undesirable. I have learnt and still learning new lessons everyday. Is that what you meant by saturn's inclination to teach a lesson here or is it that i will have to go through a very negative period during sare sathi?

Mercury obviously is friendly towards Sun - so his dasa will bring fairly good results.
Saturn's teachings doesn't involve you doing badly in his dasa. What saturn normally likes doing is to take away all your sources of support and force individuality upon you. People who are generally pampered and bought up in well settled families don't know the idea of hardwork or poverty, such people will have a hard time during the periods of saturn. But for others who are already conditioned to handle stress and difficult times will take it as a challenge and move on, they are the ones who will be rewarded by saturn.

Dear Elipsis,
I apologize for asking another question but couldn't resist myself from doing so. I started my phd well and got a fellowship from Sep 2011- July 2012 but recently experienced a critical period between may 2012 (Thats when the Mahadasha of Kethu started) and oct-nov/2012. I was under pressure to come up with a proposal and failure to do so would have meant loss of face and financial support. However, the situation has improved of late after oct 2012 but I still need to finish my proposal by the middle of May and take a qualifier exam after that. I am thinking about taking it in July. I am a dabbler in astrology and you come across as a scholar in this field. I would be ever so grateful if you please analyze my chances of A) successfully completing my PhD and B) going back to India after that.

There is no doubt that you will complete your PhD- however your present antardasa is quite unfavorable to your ascendant. Favorable period probably starts from November and will continue till the end of 2015.
However if you can't wait till November, then the other alternative would be to note down the dates when fortunate planets transit the Pushyami Nakshatra. Venus, Moon or Mercury transiting Pushyami star (or Satabhisa, Poorva Phalguni and Jyesta) will be favorable for you.

Sushan,
Many classical theories on yoga does not work.
The placement of Sun in 12th and Venus in ascendant has landed you in foreign places but very unfavorable for marriage and attachments. The planet Jupiter is strong in 4th helps with higher education.
Planets in water sign makes you a active person and would have many travels and changes in life.
Your forecast looks good this year with chances for marriage.
Regards,
Sujit

If you have the right knowledge, EXACT predictions can be made. Astrology is an incredible tool for guidance, and one should take note of the energies of changing dasha lords.

Dear Ellipsis
I feel deeply indebted to you for the time you have spent on my chart and the analysis you have provided. I probably will not be able to wait till november and have to take the exam around July/august. I will keep your suggestions in my mind and will try to schedule the exam accordingly. At this moment probably the successful completion of PhD is the most important thing in my life and I very much appreciate your words of encouragement. Best regards
Dear Sujit,
I sincerely would like to thank you for the time and effort you have put into analyzing my chart. Back in 2009/10, when I was in India I met a person through a good friend of mine and he told me that I will have many travels and changes in life. Also, I was told that in 2013 there will be chances of marriage but i probably should not get married in 2013. Your interpretations reminded me of what I was told 3-4 years ago. I consider myself fortunate that by the grace of God i continue to come across people who know their onions and are willing to help others. Best regards

First of all, I would like to express my gratitude for the feedback to Ellipsis sir and Sujit sir for the feedback I received here an year ago. Although I wanted to take my exam before Nov 2013 but I could not take it before the last week of May 2014. I passed my written exams easily but unfortunately the decision went against me in the Oral exam which was on june 3rd 2014. It has been a real set back and now there is ever more pressure to clear the oral exam sometime between August and Nov/Dec of this year with an emphasis on publication of papers in between. Another failure in the oral will mean I will be ousted from the program. Also, I will have to show satisfactory progress towards the publication of papers in order to remain funded after December 2014. I was in need of some guidance and thought about turning to this forum.
