How does the Charurthamsha chart show home and foreign residence? Does one have to look at the 12th house in the chart?

Thank you for the explanation.
I remember reading in a book on astrology that foreign residence is indicated during the MD & AD of planets placed in the 12th house of D4. How is true is this?
