Hi Sawra,
This is a very good question. It is a confusing point. The 11th lord is always a temporal or functional malefic no matter what the ascendant. Yet, planets placed in the 11th house, whether benefic or malefic, are considered well placed. Being an upachaya house, malefics especially are best placed here. Also, the 11th lord does not carry extreme malefic qualities like the dusthana lords (6, 8, 12). Wherever it is placed it can indicate an area of potential gains or income, especially side income. The 11th lord in the 4th house, for instance, can represent gains through properties and real estate.

The 11th lord is one of the three trishadaya lords 3, 6, 11, which is an often overlooked category houses. The malefic quality of the 11th house is greed as it is one of the three kama or desire houses (3, 7, 11). B.P Malviya has written an excellent article called, "The Mystic Trio in Astrology" in K.N. Rao's book, Advanced Techniques of Astrological Predictions. He quotes the Bhagavad Gita as saying:

"Tri-vidham narakasyedam dvaram nasanam atmanah
kamah, krodhas tatha lobhas tasmad etat trayam tyajet."

Which translates as:
"Desire, anger and greed - the triple gate of hell bring about the ruination of the soul. Therefore one should avoid all these three." Ch 16 verse 21

Mr. Malviya points out that desire, anger and greed are represented by the trishadaya houses 3, 6, and 11 respectively, which are opposite the most important houses for spiritual advancement: 9, 12 and 5 houses. Being the last of the trishadaya trio, the 11th house is the most powerful. He says,

"Every gain or success paves the way for another effort, as the more one gains, the more greedy one tends to be. Any control over Lobha (greed) is possible only by contentment, which is rooted in Viveka (discrimination), represented by the 5th house..

The 5th house is opposite the 11th house. Its qualities, like discrimination, and wisdom are the balancing polarity for the 11th house.

Hi Slick,
Combos of the 1, 2, 11, 5 lords are dana or wealth giving yogas. See the daily article http://www.lightonvedicastrology.com/da ... 031806.htm. Vaughn Paul

Hi Slick,
The 2nd lord is usually a temporal malefic. The exception is when
it combines with a trinal lord as in the case of Pisces, Taurus, Virgo, Scorpio, and Capricorn lagna. The 11th lord is always a temporal malefic being one of the three trishadaya lords (3, 6, 11). Jupiter is not neutral, it is a temporal benefic due it's 5th house lordship. Vaughn Paul

Hi Slick,
The best way to think of it is that the trinal lords (1, 5, 9) are temporal benefics for all ascendants. Jupiter as the 5th lord is definitely a temporal benefic for Leo lagna. It's 8th lordship is overshadowed by its trinal lordship. I don't know why B.V. Raman would say Jupiter is neutral for Leo lagna, why Saturn is neutral as the 6th and 7th lord, or why he'd say that Saturn as the 7th lord is not a maraka lord. These points make no sense to me. Jupiter doesn't own a kendra for Leo lagna. My understanding is that Jupiter is a temporal benefic, Saturn is a temporal malefic and maraka for Leo. Vaughn Paul

Hi Sawra,
The 11th house does represent friends, as well as the 3rd and 7th houses. These are the kama houses which also considered social houses. Vaughn Paul

Hi Satya,
Yes, the 11th lord's placement can indicate an area of gains. In the 5th house - through creative works, and/or children etc. Yes, the 11th lord aspecting the 11th strengthens it. To determine the effects of a dasha we need to look at so many factors - aspects, yogas, alternate lagnas, divisional charts etc. The placement is only one factor. Generally the 11th lord placed in a lakshmi sthana (5th or 9th house) is beneficial financially. Vaughn Paul

Hi Sanjeev,
Yes, I have seen examples of benefics not performing as aspected when ruling two angular houses. I can't give a logical explanation but I agree there must be some deep significance as with the 11th house. I don't have exact reference handy from texts about benefics ruling two angular houses but generally when a planet rules any malefic house and also rules an trikona house, the trikona house predominates. The main thing is that Mercury is in its own sign as the 11th lord in the 11th house. This strengthens this house. Venus and Mercury are also natural friends. The Moon being here means it repeats from chandra lagna. Vaughn Paul
