hi
Bhava Vichinthanam (analisis of bhava) is a very complex procedure in astrology.
Rasi effects are to be read in conjunction with bhava results.
Need lot lot of elaboration.
Keep learning astrology.
No short cuts please.

SJ,
This confusion arises from diff of opinion regarding the definition of Bhava or House. Parashar (BPHS) says 1 Rashi = 1 Bhava. But many other authors contend this definition and take the beginnings of a Bhava from either near the beginning of a rashi or near the middle of a rashi. Instance, the 1st H begins from 4 deg aries, or begins from 19 deg Aries (Shripati). When a chart is drawn as per the bhava rules of Shripati, it is usually known as the Bhav Chalit chart.
However a skilled astrologer can make the same predictions from either rashi chart or bhav chalit chart. And this is a matter of quite advanced students of astrology, not novices. For the beginner it is better to stick to 1 rashi = 1 bhava.

this is a good question.
at somepoint of his evolution every astrologer runs into the concept of Bhava Chalita or it's variants logitudnal based charts.
these longitude based charts...... can create major shifts in the houses that planets move into.
Bhavachalita chart works....some times....and Rasi-chakra works most times.
Now when and under what conditions Bhava chalita chart should be usable....I haven't been able to delineate fully.
For analyzing special Lagnas is this a given tool say some versions of BPHS....
reckoning the full 360degree impact of a planet during it's Dasa / AD.....is another theory propogating the apt usage of Bhava-Chalita.
regards

Vedic astrology - An Integrated approach By P.V.N. Rao ji, part 1 page 77 / 78 - section 7.5 :-

Houses are found with respect to lagna, special lagnas and some planets. Houses are found in rasi chart and in all the divisional charts. Some scholars ignore all these and take houses only with respect to lagna and only in rasi chart. They prepare something called “bhaava chakra” or “chalit chakra”, in which houses can start in one rasi and end in another. They take lagna’s longitude to be the mid-point of the first house and construct all the houses accordingly. In the “equal house method”, they take a 30º arc with center at lagna as the 1st house. The next 30º arc is taken as the 2nd house and so on. This method is popular among Indian astrologers. Another method taught by Sripathi is more complicated and it is also popular. However, this author recommends neither. Each rasi is a house. The rasi containing the reference point chosen is the 1st house and the next rasi is the 2nd house.

contrary to what PVR Rao wrote in his book ( i think earlier).....later he uses longitudnal methods in his calcualtions
http://jyotish-blog.[NO EXTERNAL LINKS PLEASE].com/2009/0 ... -from.html
he starts his first house from the degree of the Lagna( reference)....and keeps adding 30 degrees to get the next house.
I call this a variant o Bhava chalita using longitudes.
some people count the houses from 15degrees off the refrence.

P.V.N.Rao ji, quotes the following example to suggest that the he was ""intellectually satisfied"" ""in the end"" after using his version of the Bhava Chalit chart.
P.V.N. Rao ji states that ""the native got married in June 2007 in Jupiter-Jupiter antardasa as per regular Vimsottari dasa. Though Jupiter occupies the 8th sign from the sign containing lagna, he is actually in the 7th house from lagna. Being the 9th lord in 7th, he can give marriage.""
Fair enough. The point is, can Guru give marriage even if he is in the 8th house? Guru is in the 7th house from the Chandra lagna. He is most qualified to grant marriage
Let us go a step further. Guru is in the Nakshatra of Shani. During the Dasha and Antardasha of Guru, Guru will first give the results of the Nakshatra he is in. Shani is in the lagna aspecting 7th. Guru can grant marriage.
let us go another step further. Guru aspects the 7th lord Shukra, Guru in his dasha will also give the effects of the planets he aspects.
The 8th house is the ""Mangalya stana"". The 8th lord or the planet in the 8th is fully qualified to grant marriage.
In this case, do we need the Bhava chart to make sense of why guru granted marriage? I dont think so.
P.V.N.Rao ji ends the article by stating that ""This being a radical change from the norm, I {P.V.N.Rao ji}want to go slow with this one"", and that, Ladies and gentlemen makes perfect sense. because if you care to examine the rest of his examples, you will find that there is more than one way to skin a Cat. You don't need this radical departure from the existing norm to justify an event.
Example 1: 1971 April 27, 6:30 am (IST), Bombay, India
The native got married in June 2007 in Jupiter-Jupiter antardasa as per regular Vimsottari dasa. Though Jupiter occupies the 8th sign from the sign containing lagna, he is actually in the 7th house from lagna. Being the 9th lord in 7th, he can give marriage.
