Malefics in exaltation

What does a natural malefic in exaltation do? Is better for a natural malefic to be debilitated, or exalted?

I have come across all kinds of opinions. I have come across the following propositions-

1. A natural malefic in its sign of exaltation is good - because all exaltation is good.
2. A natural malefic in its sign of exaltation is bad because the planet is well placed and will therefore live out its malefic potential.
3. A natural malefic in its sign of debilitation is good because debilitation weakens the planet and makes it do less harm.
4. A natural malefic in its sign of debilitation is bad because debilitation makes the planet bring out its agressive potential.
