Dear All
The next in the list is RUDRA MUDRA
This has to be done in both the hands. The tip of the thumb should be touching the index finger and the ring finger and the other 2 fingers namely the middle and the little finger should be stretched in a relaxed manner as shown in the figure.
This mudra is connected to the manipuraka chakra which represents the bhumi tatwa. This mudra can remove weakness in the physical body and can keep one very fresh. Heart and skin ailments are also kept in check by practising this mudra regularly. This mudra should be done for 5 mins and 6 times a day.

Excellent and very useful post Ramananji !
Which Mudra is best during daily prayers or Reciting mantras; specially for Hamuman Chalisa, Durga path and MMM.
Also, You have mentioned Gyan Mudra for treating insomnia, Wonder if it will make sense to do it while you are trying to sleep.
-thanks

Dear Sinecurve
The gyan mudra can be done when you are lying down in bed and you can go to sleep in that posture. There will be no harm.
Regarding chanting of Hanuman Chalisa if You are doing it as a propitiation to Mars then you should hold the thumb of the right hand with the fingers of the left hand and the left thumb should be touching the base of the palm. The thumb signifies Agni Tattwa and represents planet mars. After 5 mins do it with the other hand.
If you are doing the same as a propitiation to saturn then you should do it by holding the middle finger of each hand with the fingers of the other hand and change hands after 5 mins. The middle finger represents Akash Tattwa and is controlled by Saturn.
Trust this helps

Dear All
The next in line is the UTTARA BODHI MUDRA
This is one of the finest mudras I have ever come across. This mudra should be done just in front of the navel.
Just join the fingers of both the hands crisscrossing each other except for the index finger and the thumb. The index fingers should join and face upwards and both the thumbs should be joined facing downwards.
If you are going to do this mudra in a lying down posture then the thumb should be facing the chest and the index finger facing upwards.
There is no time restriction to this mudra. This mudra can rejuvenate both the body and the mind. When in a depressed state if one can practice this for half an hour then instant results can be seen.
This mudra rejuvenates the sapta Dhatus (Dhatu in general is vaguely interpreted as body tissue)
The Dhatus or body tissues are formed from and nourished by the Ahaara Rasa (essence of food). Actually there are 7 dhatus.
1. Rasa Dhatu or plasma
Rasa Dhatu, the first in the sequence of the seven Dhatus, is formed by the action of the digestive fire on the food we eat.
2. Rakta Dhatu or blood
The metabolic change of Plasma produces blood or Rakta Dhatu.
3. Mamisa Dhatu or muscle
The Mamisa Dhatu, which covers the bones and gives strength to the body, is formed from each of the previous tissues.
4. Medha Dhatu or fatty tissue
The Same muscle gets converted to fatty tissue
5. Asthi Dhatu or bone
The finer essence of the fat is converted into the asthi or bone.
6. Majha Dhatu or bone marrow
The finer essence of the bone dhatu which is a semi- solid substance becomes Majha or bone marrow in the process of metabolism.
7. Sukla Dhatu or semen
Sukla, the seventh and last of the Dhatus is produced from the most refined essence of the Majha Dhatu.
Actually The food we eat becomes the sukla dhatu or Semen which when conserved gives Ojas (Vitality) to a person. The conservation of this Sukla dhatu is a pre-requisite for dhyana to get complete focus.
This process takes about 48 days and that is why they say when Vrats are observed to maintain celibacy for a mandala or 48 days.
Along with the rejuvenation of the dhatus this mudra can strengthen the lungs and the large intestine.
People who find it difficult to concentrate during meditation must do this mudra for an hour daily to see results in just 2 months.
This is a universal mudra.
This guarantees ability, freshness and concentration.

The next in the list is the KSHEBANA MUDRA
The tip of the Index fingers should be touching each other. The other 3 fingers should be joined together. The thumbs should criss cross each other and should be touching the base of the index finger and slightly pressing it as shown in the figure.
This mudra can be done in both sitting and lying down Postures. If we are going to do it in the sitting posture then the index finger should be pointing towards the earth. In the lying down posture the tip of the index fingers should be pointing towards our feet.
After holding the mudra we should do deep breathing for 12 times and after that we should place both our hands on our thighs with the palm facing upwards and stay like that for 6 mins.
At the physical level this mudra can help detoxify the skin, the large intestine and the lungs.
At a subtler level this mudra can protect us from getting disturbed by others thoughts and contradictions. Other people's unpleasant thoughts and contradictions generally spreads in a field and if we happen to be in it we may get affected. In these circumstances to protect from the negativity of others as well as to purge our own negativity and contradictions this mudra is a blessing.
Due to fear and weakness our body immunity decreases due to which sickness attacks us. This mudra helps to improve our immune system both at the physical as well as the mental level.

Dear All
I have already given all the basic mudras which when practised with diligence can make us healthy. Now, let me give you a few thoughts on what actually causes diseases.
1) The disturbances in the chakras
2) Disturbances in the naadis (there are 16 of them) which carry the energy
3) Disturbances in our energy body or energy fields
4) The base of all these is the 5 elements and their imbalance in the body creates disturbances
How do these things happen?
Contradictory thoughts, wrong breathing, bad food habits and improper life styles can create sickness both physical as well as mental.
Certain attitudes give certain diseases. For eg. Anger, grudge, guilt and worry can give blood pressure, intestinal problems and troubles to the heart.
Contradictory thoughts which when allowed to linger in the system for a very long duration can give cancer, sugar and depression
THE FINGERS AND THE 5 ELEMENTS
The thumb represents Fire, the index - wind, the middle finger- ether or akash, the ring finger - earth and the little finger - water.
Mudras help us to balance these 5 elements and gives us a sound body and mind.
That is why in yoga, dance, martial arts and spiritual practices the mudras are used.
The fingers also represent certain body parts
The thumb : Stomach and is connected to worrying
The Index Finger : Lungs, large intestine and feelings like lethargy worrying and suffering
The Middle Finger : Heart, small Intestine and feelings like nervousness and impatience
The ring Finger : Liver, urinary bladder and the nervous system and is connected to anger
The little Finger : Kidneys, and is connected to fear
These fingers are also connected to the chakras in the following manner
Thumb : Manipuraka
Index : Anahata
Middle : Vissuddhi
Ring : Mooladhara
Little : Swadhisthana
If these 5 chakras are in order then only a person can reach agnya and have his 3rd eye open permanently and may realize himself.
I shall now give the effects of mudras which are grouped because they all perform a basic function
Shoonya Mudra, Shakti Mudra and varada Mudra can remove unwanted thoughts
Ganesha Mudra, Varuna Mudra can make you adaptable
Apana Vayu Mudra, Uttaraboddhi Mudra makes us strong to face day to day life and gives clarity to our decisions
Prithvi Mudra, Garuda Mudra, Suchi Mudra can remove our obsessions and give us solace
Ushas Mudra, shakti mudra can remove unnecessary apprehensions about future.
naga Mudra increases our receptivity to subtle experiences
Will follow...

Dear All
here are some Tips which we should follow while doing the mudras
1) Do not do it casually. There should be 100% concentration
2) Wash both hands cleanly before doing any mudra
3) Mudras can be done in lying down postures and also while walking but the body and mind should be kept very relaxed
4) If in case you decide to do it in a sitting posture then take care to keep your backbone straight.
5) Follow the positions of the fingers exactly. No compromise. If you give slight extra pressure then you can actually feel the energy flowing.
6) Do not expect miracles in a day. If done consistently mudras are effective. I myself am a living example. Only after i started seeing the results i thought of sharing this with you. I have only written mudras which i learnt first hand from a very renowned practitioner and after practising each one of them and seeing and feeling subtle changes in me, I have put them here. Actually the tantrik texts talk about 278 mudras and they are one too many.
7) After getting the fingers into the correct position concentrate on your breathing..
Inhale and retain for sometime and then exhale and try to give a gap before you inhale again.
9) When you are doing mudras connected to the chakras then focus on the place where the chakra is and in due course you will see it getting activated.
10) Above everything, have faith and patience. These mudras really work wonders.
11) After doing the mudras relax for sometime (preferably do nothing) and take a glass of water. This helps.

Dear Ramananji,
It is a fantastic list of mudras you have posted. Thank you so much.
I have a humble doubt. If we do the mudras regularly, we can see significant improvement in our health and specifically if there are some ailments. But once the improvement in health is registered or the ailment is cured, can we discontinue the mudra? Would the ailment reappear? should I be doing the mudras daily even after the primary objective of doing them is satisfied?

Dear KRN,
Mudras for health benefits can be discontinued once the ailment is cured but Mudras which give spiritual elevation ,should be continued so that we evolve a bit faster and more consciously and also there is no harm in continuing some mudras which can keep us fit both physically and mentally.

Ramanan ji,
I have heard of a mudra called Maha Shiro Mudra from a friend of mine - though am not sure what is his source . It goes with the ring finger locked down between thumb and index finger , thumb holding index & middle finger , little finger left free and straight. Do you mind sharing a few details on that please?

To start with we will talk about AANI in the foot. Actually, there are 2 types one is called the Corn and another is called the Callus. I have both of them. The best remedy is to keep your sugar levels in tact and also control excesss bile which is the cause of corns. Allopathy does not accept this and they call corn as a viral infection. There are no mudras or varma points for this particular ailment.
The best Remedy is to bring home the Cissus Quadrangularis (Adament Creeper (English) or Hadjot (Hindi) or Pirandai (Tamil)) and dry it in shade for a couple of weeks and then powder it and eat this powder 5gms a day for 2 months. The corn will wither off and the Calluses will vanish.
Trust This helps
Regards
Ramanan

You have almost covered the use of mudras for almost all the areas in the body. Anyway I am not sure if these have been covered for some of the pains experienced by my relatives and friends.
Kindly give the mudras.
For lowere abdominal pain for ladies
for back pain and shoulder pain especially while being in front of the computer for long
TRY VAYU MUDRA FOR BACK PAIN WHICH IS NOT BONE RELATED(ESPECIALLY LOWER BACK), GOMUKHASANA(THE PART WITH HANDS ONLY) FOR SHOULDER PAIN, STRESS RELIEF.
for numbness after sitiing in the same position for longer time
for those who have immediate diarrohea after talking food(have poor digestion)
for those who have pain in the fingers
for what is called Ani in the foot
for muscular pull and for nerve pull
for joint pain(any specific one) AGAIN I WUD SUGGEST VAYU MUDRA
Thank you in anticipation. May be some are already covered but kindly let me know.
Thanks,
Dev
Nothing is free except God's Grace.
Thanks Kandhan, I will do that and / or suggest that to my known circles depending on the ailment.
These are great compared to allopathic medicines which I usually avoid unless unavoidable cough or pain or so.
Nice to see you back. How are your parihara research work going on(on the books that u have collected and trying to collect?
