Rudraksha’ has its etymological origin in the Sanskrit words, ‘Rudra’ and ‘Aksha’. ‘Rudra’ is another name for Lord Shiva, and ‘aksha’ means teardrop. Mythological tales have it that the Rudraksha plant was born out of Lord Shiva’s tear drops. Ancient scriptures, such as ‘Shiva Purana’, ‘Padma Purana’ and ‘Srimad Bhagavad’ mention the greatness and wonderful powers of the Rudraksha. For thousands of years, they have adorned the bodies of sages and saints leading a fearless life in far-flung frontiers seeking enlightenment and liberation.

Medicinal Value & Biomedical Properties
According to the Ayurvedic medical system, wearing Rudraksha can have a positive effect on the heart and nerves, and relieve you from stress, anxiety, depression, palpitations and lack of concentration. It is also known for its anti ageing effect, and electromagnetic and inductive properties. People with high blood pressure have been found have benefited from the use of Rudraksha seeds.

Types of Rudraksha
Rudraksha beads are classified on the basis of the number of “mukhis” – the clefts and furrows – they have on the surface. Each bead has a different effect on you, depending on the number of mukhis it has. These are vital from the astrological viewpoint, since it is believed that Rudrakshas of different mukhis please different planets. The scriptures speak of 1 to 38 mukhis, but Rudrakshas of 1 to 14 mukhis are commonly found.

Beware of Fakes!
Nowadays, they seem to come in all shapes and sizes, and available at every little shop that sells alternative medicines, including a host of online stores. But make sure you get the real stuff. Imitations look real but don’t work! Here’s how to identify a genuine Rudraksha seed:

1. A real Rudraksha bead will never float on water.
2. Even if you boil a real Rudraksha in water for 6 hours, there would no effect on the bead. A fake will easily disintegrate.
3. A good Rudraksha bead will not be broken at any end.
4. A ‘healthy’ bead should have well defined and natural corns and contours.

Mala or Rosary: Rosary made out of Rudraksha Beads in the auspicious numbers like (108+1, 54+1, 27+1) is called Rudraksha Mala. The +1 bead is called as Sumeru(it is not crossed while chanting) which is considered as boundary for returning in reverse direction for further counting. Mala is used for wearing as well as for purpose of Japa (Chanting Mantra for Spiritual attainments). It is used to count Mantra in the above figure (108,54,27). The same Mala is not used for wearing as well as Japa. Mala rests on ring finger and middle finger is used for Japa. Index and smallest finger are considered as inauspicious for touching the Mala during Japa process. Rudraksha Rosary is considered as the only Rosary, which can be used for Japa of all kinds. The details found in the scriptures say that Rudraksha rosary should be worn after proper sanctification with Mantra.

There are different conceptions regarding Rudrakshas in Shiv Puran and other Pauranic scriptures but one thing is upheld in all of these that:

"DIVYA VARSHA SAHASRAM TU CHAKSHURUNMEELITMAYAA, PASCHANMAAKULAKSHIBHYAH PATITA JALBINDAVAH"

SHIV UVACH: "For one thousand divine years I kept closed my eyes then tear drops fell from my eyes".

"TATRASHRUBINDTO JAATA MAHARUDRAKSH VRISKSHKAH MAMAAGYAYAA MAHASEN SARVESHAM HITKAMYAYAA"

"Those drops of tear which fell from my eyes gave birth to the tree of Maharudraksh on my command for the benefit of all".

"GAURISHANKARSANGYAM CHA TATHAA GOMUKHSANGYITAM RUDRAKSHAM JAAYATE DEVI – KADACHID DAIVAYOGATAH"

"O Goddess! Gaurishankar and Gomukh Rudrakshas are born by divine coincidence in some trees and found by some fortunate person".

IDENTIFICATION OF A REAL RUDRAKSHA

In the present day world when people can prepare the clones of a human being then making the exact copies of a thing is not a very difficult task for them. On account of its increasing importance and price, artificial Rudrakasha seeds are being made & sold in the market.

Artificial Rudraksha is often made from the wild berry seeds or nuts. But these berries cannot be made as real as the ones that are in the genuine ones and therefore easily be detected by an experienced eye. Here the facet (Mukhi) means the deep lining running through the diameter of a Rudraksha bead. Looking at these deep linings-facets one can recognize real Rudraksha. There are some simple tests to distinguish the real Rudraksha from fake one, though there is no fullproof method. A real bead does not float the surface of water or milk. It is also believed if in a string one suspends a real Rudraksha over a contaminated onion, it will begin to rotate. The best quality Rudraksha is a little greasy, rounded, hard, with protuberant mouth, clear face, and with a natural hole. It should be worn on solar or lunar eclipse day after performing ritual worship.

It is seen that even an unripe but genuine Rudraksha may float in the water, and a non-genuine ones made out of wood impregnated with lead may sink. Therefore, before buying a Rudrakasha one should consult a reliable and an experienced person. The five-faced Rudrakasha are very commonly found and therefore are mostly the real ones. The one-faced variety of Rudrakasha found abundantly and also very expensive. Therefore cheating is done mostly in this variety. Skilled artists draw artificial mukhis on the surface of berries, betel nuts and Areca nuts and thus try to give them a real appearance. But these artificial mukhis can easily be seen by an experienced eye and thus caught. Rudraksha having 2,3,4,6,7, or 8 faces can also be found easily but its price is more than the five-faced Rudraksha's and therefore made artificially. Little experience and awareness can save people from being cheated. Generally the Rudrakasha sold in the market are real ones as they are available in abundant in the nature but the Rudrakasha that are of rare kind are prepared artificially in order to satisfy the increasing demand of people. Price of a Rudraksha bead does not affects its religious or spiritual importance or medicinal value. Thus there is no link or connection between the price of Rudraksha and its religious, spirituals and medicinal importance.

It is evident from the ancient scriptures that Rudrakasha has spiritual as well as religious and medicinal importance. The electro-magnetic waves in the life form may be responsible for amazing powers of Rudraksha discovered several thousand years ago.

Water test of Rudraksha :
1. Some times a higher valued Rudraksha (Gaurishanker Rudraksha or a Trijuti ) are made by artificially joining two or three Rudraksha with the help of glue etc. In case of doubt such Rudraksha should be boiled in water for one to two hours. A sharp discoloration will take place at the joint in case of artificial Rudraksha.
2.If you place a real rudraksha bead in a full glass of water, it would drown in water.

Cut Test of Rudraksha :
A fool proof method is to cut the Rudraksha bead horizontally. One will find the same number of compartments as that of the number of lines . However the drawback is that by this method, the bead gets destroyed.

The Copper coin Test of Rudraksha :
It is generally held that if Rudraksha beads are placed between two copper coins it should rotate slightly. This is due to the physical and magnetic properties of the Rudraksha beads. This test requires a high level of expertise.

Eye Test of Rudraksha :
A fake or the artificial Rudraksha may look like a real one but in these Rudraksha the facets (mukhas) can not be made as real as those present on the real Rudrasha .In a Rudraksha the facets or the mukhas means deep lining from the upper part to the lower part of Rudraksha .Looking at these deep linings (facets) with the help of a magnifying glass, one can easily recognize a real Rudraksha.

Properties Test of Rudraksha :
The other is to find out whether the beads exhibit properties like inductance, capacitance, conduction of electric current etc.

Another thing to be noted is that rudraksha being a natural product, it is available in many qualities from low, medium, high to collector. A buyer should avoid low quality beads which are light weight, have broken surfaces and are unshapely and have extremely dry surface. These beads rarely provide any effect. One should go for rudraksha which are heavy, bright, lustrous, shapely and emit a positive vibration.

While stringing the beads each bead is energised with Shiva Mantra and then the rosary is washed with pure water chanting the Sadyojaat Mantra which is as follows.
Om Sadyojaatam Prapadyaami Sadyojaatave Namo Namah.

After this sandalwood paste, Agar and fragrance is rubbed on the beads chanting the following Vaamdev Mantra.
Om Vaamdevaay Namo Jyeshtthaay Shreshtthay Namo Rudraay Namah Kar Vilarannaay Namo Val Vikarannaay Namo.

Next the following Aghor Mantra is chanted while offering incense.
Om Aghorebhyo Ghorebhyo Ghor Ghor Tarebhaya Savebhya Sarva Sharvebhyo Namaste Astu Rudra Roopebhyo.

After this the rosary is smeared with saffron chanting the following Tatpurush Mantra.
Om Tatpurushaay Vidmahe Mahaadevaay Dheemahi Tannorudraay Prachodayaat.

then following Eeshaan Mantra is chanted on each bead.
Om Eeshaanah Sarvavidhaanaam Eeshwar Sarvabhootaanaam Brahmaadipati Brahmaadhi Patim Brahma Shivoham Astho Sadaa Shivom.

Next chant one round of the Mantra-
Om Param Tatvaay Naaraayannaay Gurubhyo Namah.

the furrows/ridges which make the faces maybe studies closely to find out if they have been cut or natural. also one has to look the surface closely to find out if bug-eaten rudraksh is covered up. also there seems to be two types of ek mukhi rudraksh. one oval . the other is like a regular round shaped rudraksh without any faces. dont know which one is original.

also are there ways to identify the rudraksh obtained in nepal from those obtained from other parts of SE Asia?

Even I am curious why Rudraksh has such a low coverage on this forum? Can some seniors on this forum share ? Did anyone on this forum use it as remedy and have perceptible relief?
