I am trying to analyse this person's upapada lagna (aquarius) to determine if his current relation will work out or not. I am not able to see a clear-cut answer from it as the sign lords of UL and 2nd from UL are strong (tho both are retrograde.. would it make a difference?) but then it's 6/8 position to darapada and arudha lagna. Can anyone please see his chart and let me know if it would work out or not?

UL has to be seen to check whether the married life will continue or will it break. Now if the native is not married then we should not see this rather we need to see the 11th house and the 5th house as they are the houses of friends and love affairs.
Here the 11th house lord is Venus placed in the 8th house along with 8th house lord Mercury and 10th house lord Sun. The person is having Rahu Maha dasa with the antara of Mercury. Mercury is the lord of the 11th house also. Hence friendship would have arisen for this native. Sun is the lord of the 10th house so it also means that this person has got a friend at the same place where he is working. You can also see A5. Arudha of the 5th house. So during the Mercury antara the person would have fallen in love with a person at the place of his work.
Rahu has argala on the 2nd house and it is not a good argala. Rahu tends to take advantage of the situation. Now if we see all the planets which are placed in the 8th house all are getting combusted due to the presence of Sun and in close proximity
So I doubt whether the relationship would last for a very long time

Usually the benefics are good when placed in the UL and in the 7th house.If the 7th house lord from UL is placed in the 6th house then enemity would arise as the 6th house is the house of enemies. No planet should be placed in the 7th or the 12th house. If any planets are placed here then the people associated with such planets would obstruct or try to kill the marraige.
For example if Jupiter is placed in the 7th from UL then some elderly person can spoil the marraige, if sun is placed the father-in-law can break the marraige.Because rasi is the varga at the physical level hence all these have to been from Rasi itself.
7th house in the d-9 would talk about the spouse as it is Kendra and a very vital house. It is 11th from 9th hence dharmaphala can be seen
It is opposite to lagna hence indicating the opposite sex and indicates the stree bhoga ad Purushabhoga
It is the 3rd from 5th indicating the control or growth of the abilities
it is a trine to the 3rd house which influences the skills of the person
In the native is male the 7th bhava indicates a female spouse and reverse is true. Planets in the 7th of d-9 should not be inimical to the planet occupying the rasi lagna. If so there would be troubles and difference. For ex: Rahus presence in the d-1 lagna and ketus presence in the 7th house of d-9 will indicate troules in the marraige from ketu related problems like nagging wife, ill health, confused soouse etc.
7th house is the house of relationships hence any malefics placed over there would indicate bad relationships and the native would desist from entering into such relationships due to sheer pain and suffering. The remedy lies in pacifying the planet relating to the bhava of the 7th house. For female native it is vishnu and for male natives it is the dasa Mahavidya

Umaji - thanks for the kind information. Very useful. What will be the result if 7th from UL is placed in 12th from UL.
Also my basic question was what should be infered if UL shows bad signs for marriage but Rasi shows good. ?

If the rasi shows a good placement but the d-9 shows the bad placement then the native has to undergo troubles. D-9 is the blessing of the god. As I told any planet placed in the 12th from UL such natives marraige would be obstructed by the planet. And also if the UL lord is placed in the 12th house then the person may deny the marraige altogether.
Also please note that if the A7 is placed in the 6,8,12 from the UL then the relationships would be bad or worse. If a planet is in the Marana karaka and the antara of any planet is operating and it is placed in the bhava owned by the Marana karaka planet then the marraige would be in trouble.
Like I have seen a case of a lady who was running Rahu and Moon antara. Rahu is placed in the 9th house which is the MKS for it and it is lord of Kumbha rasi and Moon was placed in Kumbha from lagna
You need to see also the AL and UL if these are in 1/12 axis then the native or the spouse may be feel that the marraige is a burden. If a marraige is in troubles then the keeping fast during the day of the UL is beneficial

I have seen in my own chart (as well as others' charts) that it would represent any relation in which marriage was seriously considered or pursued and it appears to be a very accurate determinant of a specific relation's longevity, should it meet the above criteria.
