OM Mahadbhyoh Namah

I would like briefly, as i have been thinking about it, discuss with whoever's interested or maybe just to myself, the idea of seeing.
Even if we talk on a very superficial level, i cannot make another see something. If im sitting with my friend and i see a rainbow she may not see it at first. I have to point out things around it. "Do you see that tree, it's just above it" then she may say "I see the tree but i don't see the rainbow" and we will continue with pointers until she either sees it or i say "that's allright, it was pretty that's all."

There were these pictures that were in style for a while i don't know what they were called, holographic or something, but if you looked at it just the right way you could see a picture of something even though the whole thing looked like a bunch or triangles.
I could never see the picture.

In terms of self knowledge the Self is to be seen. That goes very deep because it cannot be perceived by eyes, or even mind.

In Bhagavad Gita Sri Krishna says "yah pasyati sah pasyati" He who sees, sees.

Just some thoughts

Dear Suniti...

Some loud thinking on seeing.... :D
The eyes’ function Is to receive light and that too it’s just reflected light....Light waves go into the eye....... Light waves are transmitted by optic nerves.... and they go behind our brain. The light waves reach the back of the brain and there, physiologists stop..... because they do not know what happens. Then the psychologists come into play and they say these light waves are converted by our mind and the mind says table ...chair...pen etc....Now what is mind? ....mind we take as nothing but a bundle of memories and thoughts....so what we actually see is a thought and not table...chair or pen....!!!

.so what we actually see is a thought and not table...chair or pen.
I think it is even deeper than this. Each time an image forms you assign a label. Each time you "see" something your mind queries on your label database and matches or updates it with form/attributes etc. That is why you are able to talk about a rainbow or a table even without physically seeing it. And you can "see" it in your dreams too.

Hypothetically imagine that two of us are conversing with each other each in a different language. But each syllable/word in one language has a meaning in the other but not the same as in the first. In such a situation, we may end up thinking that we have understood each other without actually doing so :D

CRS you are right about labeling.....also most of "communication gaps" happen due to 2 meanings for the same word. one meaning is general and the other is personal to every individual....for eg..when we talk about a mountain....one would think of a huge snow caped mountain...while the other would think of a bushy..muddy...bigger hill...!

Everyone saw the apple falling but only Newton could see the truth behind it.
Seeing depends on the importance attached to the event. An artist sees the rainbow in all its colors.
A scientist sees the phenomenon behind the rainbow. A commonman sees only his problems and not the rainbow.
