Om

There used to be an old plaque in the foyer of my childhood house. It said "Faith can break the sky in two and let the face of God shine through."
I read it again and again, putting on my shoes, taking off my shoes, sitting and waiting for someone or sometimes standing there just read it. I understood it the way a child understands anything. Maybe that has somehow formed a substratum in me, im not really sure.

I find my self looking deeper and deeper into the idea of faith. I have many questions and ideas that i would like to put out to the members of this forum so that i may see some more light on this topic.

I listened to peoples beautiful stories of faith and i have a few of my own but i'm still not clear.
In Vedanta before studying, the concept of Sadhana Chatushtaya is given. These are the four-fold qualities of a seeker, attempting this particular path. Please note that im not an authority on this nor do i profess to have any of these qualites, i don't even know if im on this path or any ! I am also going to use the shocked emoticon  whenever i say something nerdy, because it looks a little nerdy to me, and i am also like that most of the time :D :D

The fourfold qualities are
Vivek
Vairagya
Shat Sampatti (consisting of shama, dama, uparati, titiksha, shraddha and samaadhaana.
Mumukshutva

As im trying to figure out faith im not going to go through the other qualties and most of you are already aware of all of that anyway.

So Shraddha as one of the qualities of a basic adhikari i think i can understand that. When a teacher is giving knowledge its probably necessary to have faith in the topic. I say probably because i usually go in to something as a skeptic but as things become clear i have faith. Also if your teacher is awesome, the way mine was i got faith from questioning everything and he could answer any doubt.

So fine shraddha to learn i can buy that. Then what happens after? After you've learned and learned and learned and prayed and prayed and prayed!

I tell you razors edge path man is the right way to say it!

So aside from learning and aside from praying the world goes on. There have been things in my life that have caused crises of faith. I have to say crises because there have been many many times. During one of these times i had gone to Tiruvannamalai, a sannyasi friend of mine was there and he was kind of irritated that i hadnt read any of the things he had told me to. I told him "see i don't know anything to read this stuff and i also don't know how much i believe."
In an irritated way he quoted Bhagavad Gita and said "shraddhavaan labhate jnanam" (the one who has faith attains knowledge) and i retorted much to his irritation, "i don't know about that, it seems to me shraddhavaan labhate kick(am).
He stopped talking to me for a while.

So life tests you and eventually you find your faith again, that never left you in the first place. (Please bear with me i promise im getting to my point soon which is not all deep and quite anti-climactic).
In Mankuthimmana Kagga there is a verse that says:

"Which child learnt to walk without falling down?
This is how the mind learns too.
To slip, to fall, and to shake oneself and get up:
Isn't this what everyone does?"

So yes i have done it. But is that all that's there? After learning and praying? Falling down getting up like a chumba wumba song?

If the one who has shraddha gets knowledge then which knowledge is it? I want to know because i want the real thing, not just to get knocked down learn something and start again. I want to SEE!

So when does that grace kick in?

just some thoughts

Dear Suniti

There are quite a few ways to express this...

1] If you are going by pure devotion....then you pray while you walk...you pray while you fall...you pray when you get up...and so on...
but the prayer has to be in total earnestness...its not to prove a point to anybody else in this world....its just between you and God. and if you think its not working then the prayer has to be again directed to god. single pointed faith.
"Faith can break the sky in two and let the face of God shine through." dont know about sky breaking...but there is documentary evidence of a wall breaking and the idol of krishna turning for the sake of kanakadasa in udupi..!!! :D

2] Going by "walking the Razor's edge" Philosophy....it means the current moment..you dont brood over past even for a moment....anytime the past memories or thoughts come to your mind you use discretion to think..."no..thats my past and i see it for what it is...i cant change it...so forget it..."...and same way about the future...."there have been positive and negative events in my life which i had no control over..and i may not have control on similar things happening in future"..so you again use discretion to stop your mind from brooding over the future....just concentrate on the present task at hand....!!! when you ask "when will i get grace...the mind has already jumped into the future.... :) just dont worry about grace....it comes when it comes...!!!

3] Going by Sri Ramana's words...Enquire...as to who is it that's falling ?....Who wants to Get up ?....Is there a separate entity there apart from a bundle of knowledge and memories...? The ego by posing such questions...gets a new lease of life and maintains its continuity... :)

My disclaimer....my mind acts crazy too..... But knowing the above helps to a certain extent.... :D

:D :D :D
well said abhijitji
i knew someone was gonna pull a Ramana on me! I had set myself up for it i guess.

Fair enough to say not to worry about grace, but i find the concept mystifying which is why im asking about it.

Also a question, regarding horoscopes, is it possible to see grace there? If so can you explain how? Or is grace the thing that rises above the jataka?

about the prayer
im gonna be one of the shiva manas puja people which secures me in all senses,

aatmaa tvam girijaa matih sahacharaah praanaah shariram griham
pujaa te vishayopabhogarachanaa nidraa samaadhisthitih .
sanchaarah padayoh pradakshinavidhih stotraani sarvaa giro
yadyatkarma karomi tattadakhilam shambho tavaaraadhanam

You are my Self; paarvati is my mind. My five praanaas are
Your attendants, my body is Your house, and all the pleasures of
my senses are objects to use for Your worship. My sleep is
Your state of samaadhii. Wherever I walk I am walking around You,
everything I say is in praise of You, everything I do is in devotion to You,

thanks

Dear Suniti...i take it.... the concept of grace is very dear to you...and you want to keep Ramana's enquiry away for a while.... :D
Also a question, regarding horoscopes, is it possible to see grace there? If so can you explain how? Or is grace the thing that rises above the jataka?
Madam.... i am an utter novice when it comes to Astrology... find it too complex...though many of my friends tried to teach me the basics...( i just got on this forum because of them... :D ).....Actually Astroboy has got a thread on renunciation....but whether a jataka can show Moksha...? may be Astroboy or P Srinivas Rao...or other eminent astrologers in the forum will definitely be able to help you..... :)

suniti

Pranaam Abhijitji!

Who wants to keep Sri Ramana's self enquiry away for a while? :D
Ok so i hope someone else responds about the jataka thing, but i want to know about grace specifically, does it transcend the horoscope? I don't know anything about astrology.
thanks for your input
and most of all thanks for showing me to put focus back on the "i" and not the "why"

Dear suniti...

My take is that Grace comes in so many forms....the very fact that we are in a place and position in life to have a discussion on grace... is itself grace :D

Madam firstly there are those with money...as well as no money....who have no concept of these things...and feel ecstatic...one moment...and utterly dejected....at the next moment....then there are the terminally ill....paraplegics....children and women in Africa.....soldiers suffering in wars....

We can come up with many explanations and theories to satisfy ourselves... based on our knowledge...but pure phyisical suferring cannot be ignored is'nt it..? :(

Grace has happened in the form of Ramana's teachings to you...If the mind is comfortable with that knowledge...then just continue it...more will follow.... :D
Similarly...grace can come in the form of selfless social work....or an intense devotion....or through a pull towards mediatation.....or music...or arts....or sports...
its as diverse as the people that it has created.... :D
So we pick what suits us best and move on...there is no superior or inferior path...

Regards,

P.S kindly drop the ji... and do translate the sanskrit verses ....i cant understand them sometimes...
