how does one predict how a MD will go. Is it too simplistic to see how the AD of the same planet was in previous MDs and assume it may be similar?

Hi,

There could be some similarities and some differences in the way in which a planet gives its results in its dasha when compared to the results it gives in its antar-dasha.

You could refer to Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and see the similarities and differences.
