Hi,
I am new to this website, but saw all the detailed posts and wanted to see if I can get any help in fixing an upanayanam muhurtham for my son, next year. He is currently in his 14th year. We live in the US, but will perform the ceremony in Hyderabad , India.
My son's dob is May 21 2004, Mrigasira nakshthram, 4th padam.
My husband's nakshthram is Aslesha 2nd padam, Kousikasa gothram.

My inlaws follow an astrologer who suggests Thursday July 5 2018 at 11:50 AM or SaturdayJuly 7 2018 at 10:09 AM. However one of my other family members is really strongly fighting against these 2 times, saying that these both will have negative impact on my son's education and in reality there is no muhurtham that suits him and my husband till September 2018.

I would really like to perform his upanayam in a timely fashion. He will start his 15th year on May 21, 2018.

Please help me.

Thanks,
--Swathi

Both dates suggested by your pandit should let-go. Its important that the 9th Lord should be strong and preferabbly unaflicted, so that your son will receive sampoorna blessing from the teacher.

Your sons complete birth chart details is not provided. Also place your prefered timeline in Hyderabad and any other preferences. So that one can try to fullfill most of the needs.

hello vemurs,

Ideally upanayanam should be performed at 5 or 8 years and the latest by 15.

Thithi , vara, nakshatra, yoga and karana form the five elements or panchanga for any muhurtha.

Thithi: -
For upanayana, the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th and 13th lunar days in the bright half and the
1st, 2nd and 3rd in the dark half are considered to be good.

july 5 - 2018 - thithi is saptami in krishna paksha. Hence is not good.
july 7 - 2018- thithis is navamai in krsihan paksha. Hence is not good

Vara:
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are good.

july 5- vara is Thursday - good.
july 7 - vara is saturday - does not come under good.

Nakshatra:
Anuradha, Hasta, Chitta, Swati, Sravana, Dhanishta, Satabhisha, Uttara, Uttarashadha, Uttarabhadra, Revati, Rohini, Mrigasira, Aswini, Punarvasu and Pushyami nakshatras are good.

july 5 - uttarabhadra is good
july 7 - Aswini - nakshatra does not appear in good.

Yoga:

july 5 - shobana is good.
july 7: sukaraman is good

karana:

july 5 - vishti .. very bad
july 7 - taitula.. is good.

So both days are bad. i have just given you a basic idea.

Then comes the Lagna at the time of muhurtha. The planetary positions based on chosen
lagna must be so chosen that it fortifies the purpose of the muhurtha. There are innumerable
combos which should be avoided. While one astro will support a muhurtha, the other would say it should be avoided at all costs..

I am a very strong critic when it comes to religious activities. My fundamental question is
whether his father is doing the Santhyavanthan atleast two times daily. The reason why i am
asking this is because he is the one who is going to 'give' his son, the Gayatri mantra.
Unless the Guru is clean, nothing can work well. This is my humble opinion.

truly yours,

surya_1,
Thank you for your reply. Preferred timeline is after June 13th 2018 before September, if not during that time, then December also is ok. I am not sure what complete birth chart details are.. but here are the birth details
time of birth is 10:52 AM
Date of birth is May 21, 2004
Place is New Brunswick , New Jersey.

Vedic maths,
Thank you for your reply. Yes his dad does Sandhyavandanam twice a day, changes his sacred thread as per the rules.

so I can safely say that July 5 and 7 are both not good for him?

Thank you once again

Hi Swathi

Happy to note you and your hubby preparing your son for Upanayanam. An excellent Dharma-Karma.
Lets clear some doubts Upanayanam ideally to be done within age of 15 years, however Sashtra permits additional one year, that is till 16 years of age.
Generally July/ August/Sep any year Upanayanam not conducted, though you can get Muhurtha day etc, anything good on Dharma -Karma done between Jan 15th -April 15th, When Ravi or Sun over Makara/ Capricon or Kumbha/ Aquarius, these are Shani's sign ( very important for chanting of mantras in focused manner), Meena/Pisces ( Around March), Even Dhanur sign also ok ( when Ravi pass through) Every Dec.
I would encourage you to choose the month , if you are saying December, means it should be Mrigasirsa month ( after Dec 15th), Dhanur becomes a Dharma sign

Don't get anxiety over inlaws, don't fight, check with them, what are the reasons for to keep in July? and don't worry about wrong Muhurtha in Upanayanam will impair your son's education tec. That is a different subject, that is pre-written from Heavens when he was born, nothing can be changed.

Regarding Sandhya Vandana, a father doing or not doing etc doesn't matter, but the responsibility of Hindu parent is implement Vedic Dharma -Karma to progeny at appropriate age and at appropriate time, I am talking about you son's Dharma-Karma is Upanayanam, and his guru will be his father but the Priest of that Upanyanam becomes Guru, who will teach Gayatri mantra, and his father will whisper into his ear.

And, Sandhya Vandanam has to be done thrice, it is called Trikala Sandhya vandanam, there is no word in Scripture preaching about two kala sandhyavandam.
