John Milton was born on 9th December 1608 being the date of the old Julian Calendar (OS) which when converted to the current Gregorian Calendar (NS) is 19th Dec 1608.

His birth details as given by Astro Databank is 19th December (NS) 1608 at
06:30 (= 06:30 AM ) LMT at London, England, 51n30, 0w10, Timezone :GMT.

The Data Source is given as Biography/Autobiography with a B rating.

Dr. B.V. Raman in his book 'Notable Horoscopes' has adopted the same birth details. The same birth details appear in the Astro Sage website in the horoscope appended below:

http://www.astrosage.com/celebrity-horo ... -chart.asp

John Milton poet, pamphleteer, and historian has been considered to be one of the greatest writers in England. What is of interest here, is his active political involvement in the Civil War in England (1642 to 1648) his championing of Cromwell which cost him dearly after the death of Cromwell (1658) the return of Charles II (1660) the restoration of the monarchy and its coinciding with period of Saturn MD Saturn AD.

There are many combinations for writing, poetry and creative output in his horoscope. The Moon is exalted in Taurus and is in its own nakshatra Rohini. Moon exalted in Taurus is found in the horoscope of poets and writers (Munshi Premchand/Rajagopalachari). In Rohini nakshatra (Moon in its own nakshatra) in the same Rasi the trends are more pronounced and this placement is very often found in the horoscopes (mostly in kendras or angles from the Lagna), of literary icons like Tennyson. In the horoscope of Benito Mussolini the Italian dictator the Moon is in close conjunction with both Saturn and Mars a planetary combination found in the horoscopes of dictators and tyrants, but the position of Moon in Taurus exalted in Rohini nakshatra made him a writer, journalist and editor which he was in his early years.

The 3rd and the 9th houses, key houses for writers, are fortified both from the Lagna and the Moon in his horoscope. Scorpio rises in Milton's horoscope, with the Moon ninth lord exalted in the 7th house and Saturn in the 3rd lord in its own house. Venus, the Chandra Lagna lord is the Atmakaraka and is Vargottama and is in the Karakamsa Sagittarius in both the Rasi and Navamsa. The 3rd lord from Chandra Lagna the Moon is exalted in Chandra Lagna. The lord of the 9th from Chandra Lagna, Saturn is in the 9th in its own house.

Venus, Mercury, Moon and Jupiter are key planets in the horoscope of poets and writers and in his horoscope they are strategically placed. Combinations for writers and poets as per the Jamini Sutras are applicable.

Venus is the Atmakaraka (it is conjoined with Mercury the Amatyakaraka) and is in Sagittarius the Karakamsa in the Navamsa ( Jaminisutra Adyaya 1 Pada 2 Sutras 105 is applicable) and the Moon is in the 5th from the Karakamsa (Sutra 112). If the Karakamsa is relocated to the Rasi Chart, Mercury (Sutra 110) and Venus (Sutra 105) are in the Karakamsa and Jupiter is in the 5th from the Karakamsa. ( Sutras 106 and 108 of Jamini Sutras Adyaya 1 Pada 2 are applicable)

**************2******************************

Here Jupiter is retrograde and is placed in the 10th house from Navamsa Lagna and in the 5th from the Karakamsa in the Rasi Chart. In the Dasamsa it is the lord of the 3rd house placed in the ninth house with the 10th lord Venus.

Jupiter Dasa was very progressive and prosperous and most of his creative output occurred during this period. ***********

Milton's Jupiter period operated from September 1643 to September 1659. This more or less coincided with the English Civil War (1642 to 1648) the killing of Charles I (1649) the rise to power of Cr*omwell and the death of Cromwell (September1658). During this period he wrote plays, poems and political essays defending the Republican (Cromwell's) cause.

The killing of Charles I in 1649 was an act of regicide and was at that time justified by Cromwell's supporters including Milton which would have very negative repercussions on him when Charles II the son of the late king, returned to power in May 1660.

John Milton's Saturn MD Saturn AD operated from 17th September 1659 to 20th September 1662.

Cromwell died in September 1658 and the interval between his death and the return of Charles II in May 1660 was a period of flux with military and political factions engaged in mutual conflict, though the trends were beginning to move in favour of the restoration of the monarchy . During this crucial period he wrote several proposals to retain a non-monarchial government which went against the popular trends prevailing in the parliament, the majority in the military and the people.

Milton's eyesight had been steadily declining and by 1652 in the latter portion of Jupiter MD he had gone completely blind. This had added to his woes.

Here Saturn like in the horoscope of Mike Dukakis is in the ninth from the Moon. Like L.K.Advani Saturn is conjunct Kethu. It is conjunct Kethu and is debilitated in the Navamsa. In the Dasamsa Saturn is placed in the 12th house (imprisonment) conjunct Mars (hidden enemies and violence).

After the return of Charles II in May 1660 there were mass executions for those responsible directly or indirectly for the murder of his father King Charles I in 1649. Tempers were running high. The corpse of Cromwell was also exhumed and its skeleton was hanged in chains.

Milton was in serious trouble.

Upon the Restoration in May 1660, Milton went into hiding for his life, while a warrant was
issued for his arrest and his writings were publicly burnt. For his propaganda writings, Milton had to go into hiding, for fear of retribution from the followers of King Charles II . , Milton's friends hid him throughout the summer so he escaped immediate arrest, but his books were burnt and in parliament his name was proposed for exclusion from the Act of Pardon to be passed in August. Through the work of friends in high places, Milton wasn't excluded in the end, although he was arrested and held in custody for a period time.

He referred to this period as one of ' deepest degradation'.

A number of leaders associated with Cromwell were imprisoned or executed, with some choosing to flee abroad for safety.

This was covered by the period of Saturn/Saturn/Mercury and Saturn/Saturn/Kethu.

In Chara Dasa it was the period of Pisces (with Mars Lagna Lord in it and aspected by Gnatikaraka Sun from Sagittarius) (Jamini aspect) and the sub period of Leo from 19th August 1659 to 19th July 1660. Leo is placed in 6/8 place from MD lord Pisces. Leo is the 10 house from Lagna. It is aspected by Saturn and Kethu in Capricorn ( Jamini aspect). Mr. K.N. Rao in his writings on Chara Dasa has always emphasized the MD and AD periods of Sagittarius and Leo as being very volatile.

In the Yogini Dasa the Dasa of Mangala (Moon) operated from 15.10.1659 to 15.10.60 and the Dasa of Pingala (Sun) from 15.04.1660 to 15.10.1662. By progressing the Moon we arrive at the Nakshatra of Chitra in Libra from 15.4.1660 to 15.10.1660 and Swati in 15.10.1660 to 15.10.1662. Both these nakshatras (3rd and 4th part of Chitra and all 4 parts of Swati) are in Libra in the 12th house from his Lagna (imprisonment and loss). The Moon is placed in the 8th from the 12th. The Sun is the Gnatikaraka.

Saturn and Rahu by transit were transiting Libra at that time. A common occurrence in Yogini Dasa is at critical periods Saturn's transit is very often close to the progressed Dasa.

_--------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the cases where Saturn MD Saturn AD is very adverse it has been observed that Saturn MD Venus AD marks a change for the better. Venus is the Atmakaraka. It is placed in Navamsa Lagna and in the ninth from the Dasamsa Lagna with Jupiter though it is debilitated. In the horoscope of Milton the Saturn MD Venus AD period operated between 7th July 1666 and 7th September1669.

Just prior to the start of the period, London had witnessed the Great Plague (May 1665 to early 1666) and the Great Fire (September 1666) with the plague resulting in the decimation of nearly 1/4th of its population. The fire destroyed 80% of the city proper including 13000 house, 89 churches and 52 Guild Halls.

Milton and his family had to leave the city and returned just after his Saturn MD Venus AD had started marking the end of a very traumatic period in his life.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

His magnum opus the 'Paradise Lost' was published in 1667 in October/November which was during Saturn MD Venus AD.

In it Milton tried to convey some insight into God's wisdom and providence. Paradise Lost is generally regarded as the greatest epic poem in the English language.

John Milton died in London on November 8, 1674.

Marie Antoinette the Queen consort of France, was born on 2nd November 1755 at 19.30 LMT at Vienna Austria 48N13 16E20. Time Zone : LMT (16E20). The details are given by the Astro Databank with a Rodden Rating of A.

http://www.astrosage.com/celebrity-horo ... -chart.asp

The French Revolution was a epochal and landmark event which resulted in the execution of King Louis XVI and his wife Marie Antoinette, during the infamous Reign of Terror (1793-1794).

What is of interest here is the nature of the death and the directional and transit influences operating at the time of her death.

The royal family was held under house arrest in October 1789 in the Tuileries Palace. On 10th August 1792 the palace was stormed, on 13th September 1792 the family was imprisoned and the monarchy was abolished on 21st September 1792.

Marie Antoinette had Saturn MD Saturn AD operating from March 1793 to March 1796. A two day trial began on 14th October 1793 in which Marie Antoinette was convicted by the Revolutionary Tribunal and executed by guillotine on the 16th of October 1793.

Mars and Saturn are two key planets, which are found in adverse houses, mostly mutually associated with each other and they often afflict the Sun and/or the Moon, in the horoscopes of those who meet with a violent death.

The 8th house is the house of longevity. The 3rd house is also connected with longevity. The 12th houses from these houses are the 2nd and the 7th houses, which are killer houses known as 'marakas' and they are prone to cause death in the Dasa periods of their lords or planets which occupy these houses. The other houses their lords and the planets associated them follow in order of importance. The 12th house signifies captivity and hidden enemies being opposite to the 6th house.

Mars and Saturn are often found to influence these houses. Mars (usually with Saturn) very often strongly aspects or is in the the 8th house, putting his signature on the nature of death. John Kennedy had Mars in Aries in the 8th house from his Virgo Lagna with the lagna lord Mercury also in the 8th house. Saturn is in Cancer aspecting by sign, Mars in Aries. Rajiv Gandhi with Leo rising had Mars in the second in Virgo aspecting the 8th house Pisces, Saturn from Gemini also aspected the 8th house Pisces. Both had the Moon in Leo in Poorvaphalguni nakshatra and both died a violent death when Saturn was transiting Capricorn.

Mahatma Gandhi had Mars in Libra Lagna and Saturn in the second house in Scorpio, with both Mars and Saturn aspecting the 8th house Taurus.

Saturn in the 10th house when influenced by Mars often leads to political assasinations. Lincoln had Saturn in the 10th house and Mars in the 9th house both aspecting the Moon placed in the 12th house. Prime Minister (January 1972 to January 1975) and President (January 1975 to August 1975) Sheikh Mujibur Rehman the founding leader of Bangladesh had Saturn in the 10th house and Mars in the 12th house (here Saturn in the 10th aspects Mars in the 12th) from his Scorpio Lagna. Indira Gandhi had Saturn in Cancer Lagna aspecting the 10th house and Mars in Leo aspecting the 8th house. All three were assasinated in Saturn Dasa. Kennedy also had Saturn in the 10th house or bhava (11th Rasi) and he died in AD of Saturn in Jupiter MD which was a strong badhaka for his Virgo Lagna.

Transit Saturn was conjunct Lincolns natal Mars when he died, it was square natal Mars (in a close orb) in the horoscopes of Kennedy, Gandhi and Mujibur Rehman when they died.

Very many examples can be given, but suffice it to say that these two planets (Saturn and Mars) often aided by shadowy Rahu and Kethu play a major role and the critical houses (2,7,8,12, and 10) are influenced by them. Additional fine tuning can be done by examining the relevant divisional charts as also the vulnerable Drekkanas occupied by Mars and/or Saturn.
They include the 3rd Drekkana of Leo and Aries which goes by the name of Ayudha (weapon) Drekkana (Kennedy had 8th lord Mars and Lagna lord Mercury in this Drekkana in the 8th house in Aries and he died of a gunshot wound in his head (Aries).

Marie Antoinette had Gemini rising with Mars in the Lagna aspecting the 7th and 8th houses. Mars in her horoscope is placed in the third Drekkana of Gemini which is known as the Ayudha (weapon) Drekkana. Saturn is placed in the 8th house in Capricorn and is aspected powerfully by Mars placed in the Lagna. Saturn the lord of the 8th is placed in the 8th in the first Drekkana of Capricorn which is known as a Nigala (fetters) Drekkana . Saturn closely aspects the Sun and Moon in the 10th house from it in Libra. Saturn is at 2 degrees Capricorn and Moon at 0 degrees Libra. Mars at 26 degrees is in the orb of opposition/square formation with both Saturn and the Moon.

It is in the nature of Saturn and Mars placed in Nigala (fetters) and Ayudha (weapon) Drekkanas that she was kept in captivity for quite some time before she was executed by guillotine on 16th October 1793.

In the the Chara Dasa it was the Sagitttarius MD a sign known for violent events. Sagittarius is in the 7th from the Lagna and is strongly aspected by Mars from Lagna (Jamini and usual aspect). She and the King were imprisoned and the monarchy abolished in September 1792 during the AD of Libra (August 1792 to May 1793) which has the debilitated Sun and the Moon. She was executed in Sagittarius MD Virgo AD (May 1793 to Feb 1794). Both these Rasis are aspected by Mars. Mars is the lord of the 6th house in exchange with the Lagna Lord Mercury.

In Yogini Dasa the Dasa had progressed to Capricorn sign the 8th house (death) from Lagna. The birth nakshatra is Chitra and ruled by Mars. By progressing the Yogini Dasa we arrive at Dhanishta nakshatra in the 8th house from the Lagna, the Dasa being that of Pingala (Sun) from April 1792 to April 1794 with half in Capricorn and half in Aquarius.. Pingala Dasa Lord is the Sun. The Sun the royal planet is the 8th lord (death) from Capricorn and is debilitated (fall from power) in the 10th (status and position) from Capricorn. Pingala Dasa coincided with their arrest, abolition of monarchy their trial and execution. The Nakshatra is Dhanista ruled by Mars placed in the Lagna aspecting Capricorn. Mars is the lord of the 4th and 11th from Capricorn placed in the 6.

By transit Saturn was in Aries at 22 degrees. It was aspecting natal Mars in Gemini Lagna, natal Sun and Moon in Libra, and natal Saturn the 8th lord in the 8th house. Saturn was also aspecting Dhanista nakshatra the progressed Yogini Dasa nakshatra ruled by Mars.

FURTHER EXAMPLES OF RISE DURING THE PERIOD OF SATURN MD SATURN AD

Indira Gandhi was born on 19th November 1917 at 23.11 (11.11 p.m.) LMT at Allahabad.

In her horoscope the period of Saturn MD Saturn AD operated from November 1970 to November 1973 and this was her 'high noon', by far the best period in her in life, catapulting her to the position of a respected mass leader and an international political personality in her own right.

http://www.astrosage.com/celebrity-horo ... -chart.asp

The horoscope of Indira Gandhi has to be studied in depth to understand the struggles she experienced in her early life, the heights to which she rose to and the immense popular acclaim she enjoyed during her 'high noon' in the early 1970's , the dark days of the Emergency which followed, the electoral defeat in 1977, .the resurrection in 1980 and her assassination in 1984.

Her horoscope does not have the orthodox yoga combinations usually found in horoscopes of Cancer Lagna natives. In that respect her horoscope is somewhat unique.

Indira Gandhi had Cancer rising with 7th lord Saturn in the Lagna in exchange with the lord of the Lagna the Moon in the 7th in Capricorn. Jupiter is placed in the 11th in Taurus in exchange with Venus in Sagittarius in the 6th house. Jupiter is vargottama. Mars is in the 2nd house in Leo in exchange with the Sun in Scorpio the 5th house. Jupiter is powerful in retrograde motion aspecting both the luminaries the Sun and the Moon. Besides the Parivartan Yogas there are Raja Yogas, Simasan Yoga and Mahabhagya Yoga among others.

Atmakaraka Saturn is placed in its own house Capricorn, in the Karakamsa in the Navamsa. It is placed in the 11th from Navamsa Lagna. Venus is placed in the 10th from Karakamsa in its own house Libra with the 9th lord Mercury. The Sun is placed in its own house in both the Navamsa and Dasamsa. Mercury the 7th lord from Navamsa Lagna is placed in the 8th house with the 3rd and 8th lord Venus indicating the short life span of her husband. (Her D1 is also manglik chart, with indications for a short marriage life. 1. Mars in the 2nd from Lagna and in the 8th from Moon 2. Saturn in the Lagna and the 7th from Moon. 3. Kethu in the 12th from Lagna 4. Venus the marriage planet and badhakesh in the 6th house conjunt Rahu).

In the Dasamsa Saturn and Mars are exalted the Sun is in its own house, there is an exchange between the Venus and the Moon.

Indira Gandhi had Saturn in the Lagna. This indicates a somewhat restricted environment in her childhood. As very often happens with this planetary combination the family fortunes had improved considerably by the time of her birth with a slow but perceptible downtrend after. Her grandfather Motilal Nehru a posthumous child and a self made made man had built up a law practice that became lucrative around 1895 and by the time she born the family was living in the proverbial lap of luxury. Her father was educated in England a graduate from Cambridge and a qualified barrister from the prestigious Inner Temple. But then came Gandhi's non cooperation movement in the 1920's the Jallianwala Bagh massacre the freedom struggle in the 1920's. Her grandfather plunged into the freedom struggle, as the Congress President leading to his his subsequent ill heath and death on 6th February 1931. Her mother Kamla Nehru also died prematurely after a prolonged sickness on 28th February 1936.

Rahu Dasa covered the period from 1936 to 1954. This was a progressive period in which she was educated, married, gave birth to 2 sons, one a future Prime Minister, witnessed the Independence of India and also her fathers rise to become the first Prime Minister of India.

Cancer Lagna natives may have problems in marriage, which may be due to incompatibility or due to circumstances beyond their control. They generally do not benefit from their married partner in a direct way or for a long duration either due the early death of their married partner or due to incompatibility.. They are emotional sensitive and ambitious (being a cardinal and moveable sign) and inspite of being introverts by nature they generally have to interact with a wide circle of people, very often in a professional capacity and generally become well known beyond their family circle.

Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Maneka Gandhi were all born in Cancer Lagna and the results attributed to this rising sign, can be applicable to them. They generally flourish on their own steam, and this may or may not be due to any inadequacy of their spouse. They generally come into prominence after the death of or separation from their married partner, putting all their energies in their own career or in that of their children.

Jupiter Dasa followed Rahu Dasa and lasted from 1954 to 1970.In her horoscope

Jupiter the lord of the 9th (fortune) is placed in the 11th (gain/victory) and is Vargottama. It is in exchange with the 11th lord Venus which is placed in the 6th house conjunct Rahu. Rahu in the 6th house denotes engagement with enemies and victory over them. The 9th lord (fortune) Jupiter is in the 11th (gain) house vargottama is excellent but it also the 6th lord (obstacles/enemies). As the Lagna Cancer is a moveable sign the the 11th house is Badhakasthan and its lord Venus is the Bhadakesh.

Badha means obstruction. This could be interpreted to mean impediment, obstacles, problems or hurdles.

Combining all the influences the results would indicate access to power after encountering tremendous obstacles and setbacks with prolonged and spirited action from ones detractors.

The architecture of the zodiac therefore brings into sharp relief the effects of the planets by their placement and aspects and a close study will afford us an insight into the peculiar and often contradictory results that result therefrom.

Jupiter Dasa was a difficult period but there was a very perceptible and gradual ascent to power. This were however personal setbacks and challenges that she had contend with; which added to her growth.

1. Her husband died on the 8th September 1960 during her Jupiter MD Merc AD ( (a) Transit Saturn was conjunct her natal Venus and Rahu and was aspected by transit Mars; (b) Transit Jupiter and Saturn were in in the 12th from natal Moon, this being the first leg of the Sade Sati).

2. The Indo China conflict occurred between 20th October and 21st November 1962, a tectonic event, that had a very adverse impact on the health and political fortunes of her father. This took place during her Jupiter MD Venus AD both planets in exchange, Jupiter with a 6th house (obstacles/enemies) and 9th house (father) component and Venus a Bhadakesh also lord of the 4th (property/home) and 11th. (On 20th October 1962 transit Saturn and Kethu were in rapt conjunction at 11 degrees in Capricorn over her Janma Rasi at 5 degrees and Mars and Rahu at 11 degrees Cancer were in rapt conjuntion opposing her Janma Rasi. This was her peak Sade Sati period the second leg)

3. Her father died on 27th May 1964 also during her Jupiter MD Venus AD. Venus being the 3rd and 8th from her 9th house and the 2nd and 7th from her 10th house. ( Transit Saturn was at 11 degrees Aquarius aspecting her natal Sun at 4 degrees Scorpio. ).
This was the third leg of the Sade Sati.

Along with these events she was moving up professionally. In 1958 she was appointed as a Member for Central Parliamentary Board of Congress. She became the
President, Indian National Congress in 1959 and served till 1960. She had been the Minister for Information and Broadcasting from 1964 to 1966.

On 24th January 1966 she became the third Prime Minister of India. This was during her Jupiter MD Sun AD. Jupiter is Vargottama and placed in Taurus in the Rasi, Navamsa and Dasamsa. The Sun the royal planet is in Scorpio mutual aspect with Jupiter. It is in its own house in the Navamsa and Dasamsa. Jupiter by transit on that day was in Taurus transiting over natal Jupiter aspecting natal Sun.

This was however a troubling phase for her. The Indo - China conflict of 1962, successive droughts, and the anti incumbency factor were weighing heavily. Moreover she did not possess the experience and mass following of her predecessors, her charismatic father and the immensely popular Lal Bahadur Shastri. Moreover the Deputy Prime Minister Morarji Desai had vast political and administrative experience besides being a man of impeccable integrity.

In 1967 in the assembly polls the Congress lost control of six states,
which was a first, especially in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.

In the General Election held on 17th and the 21st February 1967, the Congress won 283 down 78 seats from the previous elections held in 1962. Independents and others posted strong showings, suggesting a churn taking place in Indian politics. Indira Gandhi had become more vulnerable.

There were therefore elements working at cross purposes and her clash with the Syndicate or the old guard resulted in the split of the Congress Party. The key event that triggered the event was the election of the President with Sanjeeva Reddy the candidate of the Syndicate, and her candidate V.V.Giri who was ultimately elected.

On 12 November 1969 Indira Gandhi was expelled from the Congress party for violating the
party discipline. The party finally split with Indira Gandhi setting up a rival organization,
which came to be known as Congress (R). In the All India Congress
Committee , 446 of its 705 members walked over to Indira's side.

The Election Commission however recognized her faction as the legitimate successor to the Congress. All this took place in Jupiter MD and Rahu AD.

If Jupiter and the Sun the preceptor and the king belong to the establishment Saturn is the planet of the masses.

At the end of Jupiter MD Rahu AD she was the Prime Minister but the future was a question mark and she was with her back to the wall. Political pundits were of the view that her days were numbered. Saturn however in its benevolent avatar in its first sub period Saturn MD Saturn AD raised her to the pinnacle.

Saturn in her horoscope is the Atmakaraka. It exchanges signs with the Lagna lord Moon. It is placed in Karakamsa in Capricorn in its own house in the Navamsa , in the 11th from Navamsa Lagna. In the Dasamsa it is exalted in the 11th house.

In the General Election held between 1st March 1971 and 10th March 1971 her branch of the Congress the Indian National Congress (R) won 352 seats (out of 518 votes) up 73 votes from the previous election garnering 43.68% of the votes against 51 seats and 24.34% of the vote of the faction led by the Syndicate and their allies, the other votes being won by other parties . This established her as a powerful mass leader in her own right.

This took place during Saturn/Saturn/Saturn . In the Chara Dasa it was the MD of Scorpio and the AD of Scorpio aspected by the Atmakaraka Saturn (Jamini aspect) with the Atmakaraka Saturn placed in 9th therefrom. Jupiter is in the 7th from Scorpio and the lord of Scorpio Mars being placed in the 10th therefrom.

On 1st March 1971 transit Jupiter was transiting Scorpio the Chara Dasa Rasi and aspecting Saturn the Atmakaraka as well as the Vimshottari MD and the AD lord. It was transiting the 11th house from her Janma Rasi.

In Yogini it was the Dasa of Bhadrika with the nakshtra of Magha in Leo ruled by Kethu. Kethu is in the 11th from Leo. Bhadrika lord Mercury is in Scorpio over which transit Jupiter was transiting.

The Indo Pak War of 1971 lasted from 3rd December 1971 to 16th December 1971 with India dealing a crushing blow to Pakistan. Pakistan's General A.K.Niazi signed he instrument of surrender on 16th December 1971. This restored the nations morale after the disastrous 1962 war and carried forward the advances made since the 1965 Indo Pak War. This added another feather to her cap and raised her stature by several cubits.

This was in Vimshottari Dasa Saturn/Saturn/Venus. The Chara Dasa was Libra MD Scorpio AD and the Yogini Dasa was Ulka MD Ulka AD ruled by Saturn with Poorvaphalguni in Leo with Mars in Leo Venus in the 5th and Sun in the 4th house. Jupiter Vargottama is in the10th from Leo. Transit Jupiter in Leo was transiting over Leo lord Sun and aspecting Ulka lord Saturn.

Leo Lagna is a majestic and fiery sign and is often found rising in the horoscope of powerful kings, politicians, senior military and police personnel. It is a sign best suited for command and leadership roles and fighting and combat comes naturally to those born when this sign is in the ascendant. They generally shine during periods of adversity. Leo Lagna natives by and large have an impressive physical presence and aura and the multitudes as if by instinct coalesce around them. To a vast majority of them, honour and self respect are more important than life itself.

In the horoscope of Shivaji, Mars yogakaraka in the horoscope is placed in the 11th house. This is an excellent position for Leo Lagna and also found in the horoscope of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw the Chief of Army Staff and victor in the Indo Pak War of 1971 who also had Leo Lagna.

President Roosevelt also had Leo Lagna ( there are some who take Virgo Lagna but it is a borderline case and Leo seems more plausible and is used by most astrologers, considering his personality and powerful presence) with Mars placed in the 11th. He was the Asst Secretary of the Navy during World War I and he more than any other leader steered the allies to victory in the Second World War.

Saturn is exalted in the horoscope of Shivaji in the third house Libra which is known as Vikramsthana which is associated with courage and valour. George H. W.Bush Senior had this combination. George Bush Sr. was one of the youngest war veterans who had enlisted in the air force during World War II when he had just turned 18. and was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross (World War II). As a President he successfully oversaw the victory of the allies in the Gulf War in 1990-91.

All these leaders have well placed planets and an impressive resume .

Another Leon Y.B. Chavan

had Leo with Sun in the 7th Mercury in the 8th and Venus in the 9th. (Similiar placements in the horoscope of Shivaji). Mars in his horoscope is exalted in the 6th and Jupiter in the the 5th in its own house. Y. B Chavan was a noted freedom fighter and took over the Defence Ministry after the disastrous Indo China Conflict and was the Minister of Defence during the 1965 Indo Pak War when India's military fortunes turned a corner. He was powerful political leader, being the first Chief Minister of Maharashtra ( 1960 to 1962)and holding heavyweight portfolios in the Cabinet including Defence (1962 to 1966) Home (1966 to 1970) Finance (1970 to 1974) and External Affairs (1974 to 1977).

Other notable personalities with Leo rising include Lyndon Johnson and Rajiv Gandhi.

The Moon in the horoscope of Shivaji is Vargottama and there is a strong Chandra Adi Yoga with Jupiter in the 6th from Moon, neechabhanga Mercury in the 7th from Moon and Venus in the 8th from Moon.

All these personalities have a strong Saturn and Jupiter with either Jupiter aspecting Saturn or both planets, Jupiter and Saturn, well placed in their own houses or exalted.

In the horoscope of Shivaji, Jupiter is with the Sun an asset in any horoscope and throws its powerful aspect on Mars in the 11th, exalted Saturn in the 3rd and the Lagna. Jupiters influence is all pervasive and this made him a principled ruler with a very strong religious conviction, belief and faith, imbibed from his extraordinary mother. Jupiters influence is welcome in any horoscope and its influence over Saturn always blesses one with sagacious thinking, foresight and diplomacy, keeping one within the bounds of what is practically possible without allowing limitless ambition or erratic behaviour to derail the career.

Saturn rules the 6th and 7th for Leo and as the 7th house Aquarius is the Moolatrikona sign it gets precedence. While the 6th rules diseases and enemies , the 7th controls spouse partner and in some cases opponent. Saturn has been termed as a lesser malefic for Leo Lagna by some and as a greater malefic by others. In practice Saturn well placed and aspected has the potential in its Dasa to take one to heights.

The Surya Siddhanta defines Uttarayan as the period between the Makara Sankranti (which currently occurs around January 14th) and Karka Sankranti (the period around July 14th).
. This covers the Sun's transit from Capricorn to Cancer.

An observation of horoscopes and careers of prominent personalities in Maharashtra past and present indicates that Saturn's arc of transit from Capricorn to Cancer proves beneficial to the state, a phase when important personalities come into the limelight and flourish.

The tempo picks up when Saturn is in Sagittarius and lasts till about its transit of Virgo but it assumes a powerful vitality when it moves from Capricorn to Cancer. The 1960's and 1970' s witnessed a wave and the 1990's and 2000's a second wave. (By logical progression the 1930's and 40's also fall into this category). These periods witnessed a period of flowering in the field of literature, sports, politics and in general, with men of calibre and talent occupying the centre stage. In the field of sports if the first cycle saw the rise of Ajit Wadekar and Sunil Gavaskar with the Indian cricket coming of age in the 1970's in the second wave the likes of Sachin Tendulkar (1989 to 2013). These observations become solidified when one studies the careers of icons like Sant Tukaram or the playwright Vijay Tendulkar, and writer and humorist P. L. Deshpande and other prominent luminaries.

The movement of Saturn in these signs in the life of Shivaji is enlightening.

What is of importance here is the period of Saturn MD Saturn AD which began roughly in October 1668 and lasted upto October 1671.
