Hi,
This unusual thought came to my mind recently.
Can the very study of Astrology be considered as a sort of passive remedy?
Whenever we are studying astrology, we are really contemplating (dhyan) over the personalities (characteristics/signification) of planets, nakshatras, signs etc , their related celestial agents (deities) etc. So essentially what we do is we do "dhyan" over their forms. Shouldn't this be treated as a passive remedy for all types of astrological issues? I use the word 'passive' here, because the intention is really to understand astrology and not really aiming it as the remedy. But even if we don't intend, we are doing "dhyana" over them nonetheless.
I intuitively feel it should be so. But let me know your opinions.
Thanks
Can study of astrology itself be considered as a remedy?

Dear ddd
I fully agree with you.
In fact I've seen that the study of Astrology provides a great understanding of life.
I've seen people reacting a particular way and as soon as dasha changes the thinking process is changed totally (At time sits 180 degree change). My understanding of this Divine Science is that nothing can prevent the event from happening (none of the remedy) but the way we react to it depends on us, and that is in our hand.
Though we always react as per our life script that is made from previous life's impressions but it can be changed.
God bless you
Neeraj

Hi Neeraj,
Yes, I see that basically you are stressing on the therapeutic value of the astrological study, the way it makes us conscious that all that is happening in our life is a divine play. This is also important point and thanks for bringing it forth.
Now whether we can change something or not -- this is very open ended, controversial topic among scholars of astrologers too. I guess some part of our life, which is "hardened destiny" (prarabdh) is not alterable. But then I read that some part of our karma/destiny (sanchit karma) is alterable otherwise so many stotras/hymns wouldn't guarantee that. Also, for example, in recent times astrologers like Shri K.N.Rao have also focused importance of Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, Vishnu Sahasranam etc as a remedy to avoid calamities in life. Anyway, it's very open ended topic, and I know there is another thread already going on on karma and freewill etc. So I won't drag it further. So I would like to welcome any other opinion on whether astrology study itself can act as a remedy on the same line as stotras/mantras. Even the great Varahamihir has said:- "No person who studies and divines the course of destiny will ever be found in hell, but will reside permanently in the world of Brahman".
Also if I am not boring you guys , let me describe another incident from the book I read -- "Living with the Himalayan Masters". It's by Swami Rama and his experiences with various mystics in Himalayas during his youth. Swami Rama was told in his childhood that he would not live beyond certain age (I think 20), and that astrologer would never go wrong. So when Swami Rama reached that age he met with a fatal accident (he slipped somewhere etc) but somehow miraculously survived. Later he said to his Guru that since he didn't die it means the astrologer's prophecy clearly was wrong. On this the Guru said that "No, his calculations were correct and he was not wrong, but there is something beyond astrology". Clearly, his destiny was interfered by the grace of his Guru. This makes us think, that remedies with faith do work.

Now the 2nd house is one's behaviour and actions and the 3rd being 2nd to the 2nd, is the house of self effort. So here (the 2nd and 3rd house pair) there is no concept of remedies in the sense that one depends on oneself.
But 8th the house of astrology is directly opposite the 2nd. 8th stands for transformations too. It is using astrology to transform itself. The remedy is an all round 360 degrees unlike say remedy from other houses which is on a nominal basis like the placement of the planet there, the aspect it receives from other planets etc. with the 2nd and 3rd house pair as mentioned in the previous paragraph where the application of remedy by the person is at its minimal.
9th is God and is 2nd to the 8th. So 8th is trying to make use the resources of God for a complete round of remedies. So the chain is from the 9th to the 8th and from the 8th to the rest of the chart including the 8th itself for complete transformation ie. the actual study of astrology itself represented by the 8th.
