hi. I'm beginning to learn Vedic astrology. I would like to know if planets and nakshtras are used to define exalation debilitation and combustion of planets in your chart.

You shd refer any standard textbook for this info.
Every planet is exalted in some sign and get debilitated in exactly 180 deg opposite to that sign.

It'll be much better if you can remember the exaltation/debilitation of planets in the nakshatras.

Any planet in close vicinity of Sun is considered as Combust.
Different planets are combust in different ranges (nearness to Sun) but practically any planet in same navamsa with Sun is totally combust.
