Almost every night, I get scary nightmares. Usually about snakes, as it is my biggest fear. But sometimes the nightmares are also about random mishaps (losing my purse, missing an exam, seeing ghosts) and its always negative. I don't even remember the last time I had a good dream. I will wake up in the middle of the night and look around my room. All this happens on a regular basis.

I don't watch scary movies, often. And I usually try to keep my mind calm before bed. So I am still confused as to why this happens. I want it to go away, like forever. If any of you happen to know any remedies or mantras to prevent nightmares, please let me know. It would help me a lot!

Thanks

Hi Tandav -

Most dreams are the result of our sub-conscious storing away bits and pieces of random info, and then bringing all that data to the fore, whenever our consciously-sleeping (relaxed) but sub-consciously wide awake minds are processing and regurgitating all that massive treasure-trove of seemingly unrelated data.

Realize that the storage, retrieval and processing is not at all linear (sequential) and it also produces weird results such as these bizarre dreams. Most often, it is a heightened sub-conscious response to a perceived fight-or-flight risk that is very real in your waking life. Maybe you have relationship turbulence, you are going to or preparing for some critical interviews, job situations, or even tough exams, etc.

Anyway, I'm not a psychologist and this is not an astrological solution :| Also, I read somewhere that scary dreams are common during the Ketu MD, AD or sub... maybe worth investigating. You may want to search on this and other sites. Hopefully it gets resolved for you soon, and back to happy dreaming!

Hey Tanu, and yes I am going through my Ketu AD. It has become worse since.

My nightmares do reflect the risks and turbulence I experience at day. Definitely exaggerated and heightened. I guess I would have to wait until all this turbulence is over and done with to get some good nights' sleep.

Thanks :)

Could members please suggest some remedies.

I have tried a few remedies, and they haven't worked very well. I still get scary nightmares and imagine scary thoughts when I go to sleep. It has affected my sleep schedule even. Help? :(

A person should not be too honest. Straight trees are cut first and honest people are screwed first.

Thank you anuradha ji.

I have noticed on other threads that you mentioned the navnag stotra is a remedy for Rahu as well as KSY. I will give it a try but due to the nature of Rahu, would reciting this mantra strengthen a harmful Rahu even more?

Nav Nag Strota is to pacify the effects of Rahu.

Hey onlyhope, glad to see you drop a visit and at perfect timing too. Last night I dreamt a brown snake chasing me for 10 mins (or at least it felt like 10 mins in my sleep). :( Not cool. As for ghosts, I don't really believe in them too much. Which sounds quite odd since I frequent an astrology forum, but I haven't really given them much thought. Strategically actually. I'm scared if I think about them, they will follow me. So I'll just stop the ghost talk here (for my own sake).

Hiya, Tandav and Onlyhope -

Great discussion you two have got going! I remember Tandav saying she was having some weird nightmares.

Don't mean to butt in but I'm sure y'all have already tried all the standard pre-sleep thingies - chamomile tea, soothing baths, lotions, soft music, low/ambient lighting, NO caffeine, tea/coffee/alcohol before bedtime, reading a nice book, etc? TV - it works for some, keeps others awake longer...and no meals 2 hours prior, light snacks will do. (what if you wake up hungry at 3 am? help yourself to a little cookie or icecream  )

Seriously though, I'm not a dream expert, but unlike many I do remember a lot of dreams after waking up. Few of my g/fs have said they don't remember any dreams?? Deep sleepers? I dunno. I seem to remember conversations, events, people, and even money if its involved but these are not really nightmares. Well, occasionally.

Guys, maybe y'all need to get out more... If you can't get going with people, please, pleaze, please, adopt a dog a stray cat, or some other pet, start connecting with animals and nature... its a whole world out there, no, really it is. Animals are so under-rated when it comes to intelligence. Horses, dolphins, whales, primates I could go on and on. Your dog will give you unconditional love that no human would (even if he or she could!!) Ya, I'm a pet-lover if there ever was one. Americans and Russians in particular just love dogs.

OK, now this is way off-topic but you've gotta try whatever works for you. For me, my labtriever is a guaranteed stress buster, first-rate and free of cost! You can spoil your pet all you want  and the worst thing that'd happen is they'll put on a few extra pounds LOL...

Oh BTW here's a story, if you really wanna hear it, that someone in my family told us a long time ago.

A husband and wife have just bought a house, an apartment rather, on the 3rd floor of a building. They settle with the realtor/owner, move in and are going about their daily business. Hubby comes back from work one night and finds the wife staring out the kitchen window. It is dark outside. She says to him, "Did you know that there's a cemetery a few hundred yards from our building? Look, I can see it from here, and I'm really scared. What if.." Before she can finish, he says to her, "Hon, you got nothing to worry from dead people.. they're never ever going to hurt you. but the living ones?? now thats a different story. You need to worry about them!!".

And if anyone ever tries to scare you with ghost stories tell them to shut their claptrap and go disappear. I wouldn't mind insulting such creeps.

I hope ya'll get better sleep and nicer dreams. here's to wishful dreaming !!

Hi Onlyhope -

In your prior message, you used the word "handicapped" - was that in a literal sense? Do you have a physical disability? I ask because you sound dejected with life, in addition to being exhausted and drained. I'm puzzled by that.

If there's no physical impairments to deal with, its hard to believe its all physiological.. though the symptoms are just that - weight loss, migraines, lack of sleep. And again, not trying to second guess, but why would you let it all go from Hero to Zero in 20-25 years? Was there a major financial (or personal) loss?

Sorry if I sound too probing. Not able to wrap my head around it all came to be this way.

Tanu

This post again for Tandav,

Long sleep hours means sleep deprivation. If the sleep is not sound your body wont recharge with sleep. So even with 24 hours sleep you wake up tired. In the long term sound sleep is necessary for good health. Some people simply sleep long hours and thats ok too.

Since u prefer ayurveda, i know himalaya herbs is a known brand the world over though i cant guarantee anything. They may have stuff for sound sleep. If you can find out what herbs helps you could try any brand you prefer. Final medical decisions must always be made by the patient only.

And about snakes/ghosts/dreams - dont worry about it, its not real because its in your sleep or semi sleep state.

Yes if a snake/ghost walks up to me when i'm awake and going out and about my daily routine then I would be scared! Maybe reverse psychology will help. Like I cant think about something and make it come in my dream. :) I deliberately watched horror movies for a while but no dreams about them.

sorry mam i wrote that for tandav thinking these were just bad dreams and not sleep disorders or sleep paralysis .. i think if this was sleep paralysis hallucinations she definitely would be sure about it . there would be no doubt about it in her mind ..

what you are describing, i would be really happy if i could get to that state, actually i have been practising myself for many nights to get to that state .. some very close misses but i hope i get there soon :)

yes they are hallucinations but there is a lot lot more to it.. (if you search more about it ) i didn't read your posts earlier so sorry , i am sorry about your situation :(

i see you are currently a mainstream science believer so i'll stop here.

i wish god gives you strength , peace and happiness

Regards

I dont know, how many believe in dreams but yes certain dreams signify of the events happening in the future, which i have experienced it. If you see my post, where RAMANAN sir would have helped me with directions of keeping the head in south direction while sleeping which has helped me.

Nightmares are common during Rahu/Ketu periods especially serpent related and death related ones. These are indications of Ill placed Rahu -Ketu in the Chart. The first step is to acknowledge them as astrological phenomena, and not get bogged down by them.

It may be easier said than done. However one may make use of some simple remedies to reduce the frequency of these dreams. Perform Aslesha Bali. This is done in many South Indian Temples, especially Keralite ones. The ceremony is conducted on the day of the Aslesha asterism (Naga Devatas rule Aslesha).Do not kill any insects or rodents. These again make a marked appearance during adverse periods of Rahu/Ketu.

Most people with any form of Sarpa Dosha suffer from nightmares, this is amplified during periods of Rahu/Ketu. Badly placed mercury or Moon also contributes to the same.

God bless.
