Could some one please tell me if a transitting planet starts showing effects couple of days before the actual transit date ? I read this somewhere on some website.

yes it does....events cast their shadow before they come theory applies here....
for example the affects of Jupiter's transit have started showing already..

based on lives of some natives I monitor in my close circles...not quite full affect.....atleast the die is being cast for what's to come

Planets in transit indicate/express as per the rashi as well as bhava so there can be an overlap due to that. It must be kept in mind.

Unless the astrologer uses only the whole sign as a house. For natal as well as transit astrology.

Oh yes, Shilpa Jee, I second your pointers.

For example today - the entire day is Ketu period in my horoscope (and Ketu always lets out steam, visibly). Despite that, I could finish almost all my work. Infact I found the elusive old-times fountain pen in my favorite colour and model! Plus other things!!
I thought today will be a poor day but as it turns out almost the opposite..
Things are going smoothly since past few days (well, except with getting a job!)

Maybe my 'Retro' Jupiter has finally started doing modern dance and my Saturn has become a lenient dance teacher!
If not, then can't be my luck - as I have never been lucky. Maybe VRY..

Neel

Yes they do and more so with the larger, slower and outer planets i.e. Jupiter and Saturn. Since most of us are so used to using software that conveniently calculate all the complicated calculations, we tend to look at planets as points and zodiac signs as fine lines. If you were to grab a binocular or telescope and look out out there , you'd see that the planets are enormous in size and they don't really just transit into a sign completely in a second or something. Like a runner in a race may set his foot over the finish line before the rest of his body crosses that line, similarly, the celestial bodies gradually enter the magnetic fields and the events follow gradually. Something more to read up, if you're interested, is rashi sandhi.

... and bhava sandhi might have a bearing too, additionally.
