Hi Forum members,

Back on this forum after ages.
Few minutes back I broke a mirror that I had been using for ages in a fit of anger & my mother was not too pleased about it. She said breaking a mirror brings unimaginable bad luck & she seemed pretty serious bout it.

I googled on the subject & to my amazement found that this idea is supported in almost all religions & cultures.
Two most prevalent logics are:-
1)As we look into a mirror, a minuscule part of our soul is trapped in the mirror. The older the mirror, greater is its effect & bad omen that I brings on breaking it, as it breaks a part of our soul.
2)Mirrors were thought to be mysterious & extremely expensive items in old ages. Hence the story.

Do breaking mirrors really portend bad luck? What does Hindu religion/mythology say on it? Do any forum members have any experience in this regard?

Thanks & Regards.

I personally don't think its something to panic about, if that were true everyone who brakes a mirror will suffer the same generic fate, how can it be possible? Well..if it is possible then let me know the mechanics of it.

But the world is full of generalizations, maybe something did happen to somebody and that person made sure everyone knew about it. Sufferings are always contagious, it probably eases our breathing or something...but its true.

Hi Ellipsis,

Good to read from you after such a long time. How are you doing? Used to like your posts, esp those related to foreign travel(ur specialization subject I guess :) ).
Btw have posted 2 case studies, maybe you can spend some time on those.
Reason I was surprised was bcoz all cultures/religions unanimously believe that breaking mirror is bad omen.
Don't know of anything else on which all cults & faiths concur to such a degree.
I have mentioned in brief probable origin of this belief.

Thanks & Regards.

Nah, my specialization isn't foreign travel...its more to do with research. I'll let others respond to this thread before it derails.

The logic you've mentioned doesn't make sense though...souls can't be trapped in objects, this ain't harry potter. Mirrors doesn't show the true reflection, its a false projection of light - scientifically speaking what you are looking isn't exactly real . So coming back to belief system what is really true is that mirrors reflect what you are wishing for.

Regards.
