Keeping Shivling at Home

I have heard from a number of people that one should not keep a Shivling at home and that doing so brings problems in life.
Could someone please elaborate on whether this is true?

In shiva Purana it is mentioned that you can keep shiv linga maximimum upto the length of one finger in the house.

If you keep shiva linga then daily abhishekam is a must.

I am not a expert in astrology or anything, but i have shivling at home from last 5 years and slowly our family is growing.

All lord Shiva can do is good. If any one has shivling in home it takes 5 min to do abhishek and one can chant bilwastakam etc.

So don't worry. Keep your heart and mind pure.

Dear All,

I have a shiv ling which is one feet tall with three statues of Nandi deva in my pooja room for more than 27 years. There is no harm, but please do take care to do daily pooja.

Shivlingam can be kept at home and can be performed absikam provided...
1 If you are wearning sacred rhread.... Trikala sandhyavandanam to be perforned..this is your daily Karma performance which will yield additive result in the desired result during any rotual procedures or prospects in your working environment
2.Pitru karmas has to be performed consistently.... with out doing this any kind of poojas etc will nit yield desired impact
3. Your family deity God needs to be worshipped daily with slokas
4Shiv lingam ikept at home daily abhisekam on shivlingam and other idols Lord Ganesha, Annapoorneshwari devi and a nandi
5 While Performing abhisekam on Shiv Lingam....Panchaaksharam would be enough....however as I do daili Shiv lingam abhisekam....chanting Rudram,Chamakam,Purushasuktam....etc
6I have attended athirudram and Maharudram along with chanting...except in temples majority households have smaller lingams in Size...but some do have larger size shiv lingams at house
7As I said...Shiv poojas has to done flalessly with appropriate mantras recitals with proper prononciations

As I was reading your migraine disorder...please chant Shiv storams daily...your mind will be relaxed...since you are anxious and tense, moon can be strengthened with shiv stotrams. Because of your stress migraine episode...like Headche, nausea etc can be tackled. Do not take caffeinated drinks luke tea coffee colas etc these will wlicit migraine headches by keeping you awake... There are others reasons too like hormonal imbalance, high serotinin release etc..... Finally is your blood presuure normal?

I will start chanting Shiv Strotrams daily. Yes, I am going through a lot of stress and anxiety. My blood pressure tends to be fairly low. Before my Rahu AD began, I used to fall ill very frequently. Now I don't fall ill that often but get migraine attacks more frequently.

I have 3 feet tall Lord Shiva idol in my puja room and also Lingam for the last 21 years. Many people have asked me to not keep idol in the house and donate to some temple but somehow I could not bring myself to do it.
After reading the topic I am again in doubt regarding the idol.
Any advice about the same would be much appreciated......thanks !!!

Chart is good... you may start doing shiv abhisekam at home daily. but once you start the abhisekam on Lord Shiva idol daily you have to do it either in early morning or at twilight time.

Hello Ket,

In your above post you mentioned the person with such planetary combinations will do rudrabhishekam daily, i have Sun in aries in 10th house in Navamsa.

In my pooja room i have couple of small lingam's one in marble and the other in black, i started doing water, milk, vibhudhi and ashtaganda abhishekam on these 2 lingams since last 2 years or so.

While doing the abhishekam i chant mrityunjaya mantra and after that one time i chant lingastakam, bilvastakam, mangalastakam and vishwanadastkam.

I hope i am doing right.

Nice to hear you are doing Lord Shiva's aradhana daily on two lingams.Please keep Lord Ganesh and a Anapoorneshwari devi and Nandi during abhisekam.Vibuti abhisekam pleases Lord Shiva much more.Please keep a Bhilva leaves on Lord Shiva lingam after the abhisekam...it wil negate any kind of Brahma Hatya dosham. Chanting of Bhilvaastakam and Lingastakam is good too.

ur posts are very useful thnx for sharing ur knowledge,further i have one querry i dont have any shivlinga at home but a pictute of Shivlinga (Ujjain Jyotirlinga) simply in glass frame ,i just apply Chandana on that n chant Om namah shivay (108 times),apart i like very much Bilvashtkam n Lingashtakam (audio by SP Balasubrahmaniyam) can i chant that with the help of U tube link,i dont have Bilva patra to offer as such,plz guide.

Excellent. Please comtinue to do chandan tilak and kumkum on Jyothirlingam photo daily and chant panchakshram and shiv stotrams
If I may suggest, prior to chanting shiv stotrams can you daily listen to Guru Padaka stotram and than chant shiv stotrams. Guru padaka stotram will aid you in future for your dharmic needs and comforts along with Shiv namahas

At the onset, I appreciate you being a Westerner and showing and making your efforts in strenghtening your daily Shivlingam abhisekam. In order to enhance further your keen interest in Lord Shiv aradhana... I would suggest further you to enjoy the abhisekam on Shiv Lingam daily

1. Keep Lord Ganesh idol along with Shivlingam during abhisekam. The reason being, any daily ritual pertain to Lords.. first foremost has to begin from Lrd Ganesh Aradhana... and Lord Ganesh is sonf Lord Shiva..

2. Also Goddess Annapoorneshwari idol should be there when Lord Shiva abhisekam is done.. because she is Shakti for Lord Shiva

3. You need to have a Nandi Idol during Shiv aradhana... Nandi is special signigacance in Shiv pujas... as he is Lord Shiva's Vahaan.... and through him one can reach Lord Shiva

4.Regarding Monday... you take plenty of time for Shiv arafhana that is really good.... Monday is the day significance for Lord Shiva apart from Sundays and Thurdays

5. Regarding mantra chanting.... I will not advivre you to so... as these are to learnt under in Guruku.... a Guru has to teach... Astrologer may tell you to Chant mantras like Mahamrityunja manta etc but these mantras are sacred and it has to be chanted in appropriate manner.

6.You can also do Cow milk, Rose water, Sandal paste, Tender coconut water, Honey, Gingerly oil, Cow ghee, Cow Curd, Paste of Cow Urine cow dung Cow milk Cow curd cow ghee, fruits cut into small pieces on Shivlingam and other idols as per day and later wash them with pure water.

7. You may download Mp3 songs on Lord Ganesh, Goddess Durga and Lord Shiva Lingashtakam and play it during abhisekam..
Ofcourse you will culminate the daily ritual with petals, camphor Lit and naivedyam..... these are important procedures



Enjoy your daily Lord Shiv abhisekam... may Lord Shiva bless you to continue this ritual rite in your life journry
