Hi Learned Members
There is a very good article on exaltation of planets. Refer to this link and read through it.
http://www.nikhilworld.com/concept-of-retrograde.html
Let's see how the concepts in the article can be applied to my retrograde Saturn.
My birth is 22nd June 1962
Singapore 1 degree 16 minutes north
103 degrees 51 minutes East
GMT +8.0
9:02 am
Actually I was born in1962 at 8:32 am and the GMT at that period was +7.5 for Singapore. But use the above to get the correct dasa periods UNLESS your software does not allow you to manually key in the GMT.
Rasi Chart
------------
Saturn sits on the 7th and becomes Mars, its vedhak planet.
Mars (the retrograde Saturn) is exalted in Capricorn, so it is good.
Mars (the retrograde Saturn) is Yogakaraka for Cancer Ascendant (here I am taking the normal Rasi chart) so it is good.
Moon is with Mars (the retrograde Saturn) so it is good.
Moon in Capricorn, so strength given by Moon to Mars (the retrograde Saturn) is diluted a little.
Venus aspects Mars (the retrograde Saturn) which is in Capricorn. This produces good too.
BUT THE ARTICLE ALSO SAYS THE RETROGADE PLANET ALSO ACTS LIKE ITS OWNSELF, SO THE ABOVE IS JUST LIKE SATURNI IN ITS OWN SIGN (ALTHUGH IT DOES NOT QUALIFY FOR ANY RAJA YOGA ASE MENTIONED EARLIER) BEING ASPECTED BY VENUS.
The article says a retrograde planet cannot be considered for the Great Person's Yoga because a planet in its own sign retrograding is weaker than a normal planet going forward in its own signs. But from the above, we can see that the retrograde Saturn (turned to Mars) is still powerful.
Navamsa Chart
------------------
Retrogade Saturn (turned to Mars) is with Mercury in its own sign Gemini.
Mercury is enemy to Mars (retrograde Saturn) and Mars (retrograde Saturn) is uncomfortable in Gemini.
BUT THEN THE ARTICLE SAYS A RETROGADE PLANET CAN ALSO ACT LIKE ITS OWN SELF. SO THE RETROGADE SATURN IN GEMINI IS ALSO A NORMAL SATURN, SO TOGETHER WITH MERCURY IN GEMINI, THIS RETROGADE SATURN IS GOOD.
Sun casts a 7th aspect to the Mercury+Mars (Retrogade Saturn) conjunction. Sun is friend to Mars (retrograde Saturn) and Sun is neutral to Gemini, so it is good (but some astrologers think Sun does not do well in Gemini, wewill discount these finer points).
Mars casts an 8th aspect to the conjunction as well and Mars does not like Gemini but Mars and Retrogade Saturn turn Mars are one of a kind.
On the whole the above Mars (retrograde Saturn) is still ABOVE AVERAGE.

Note that we can combine the concepts in this article with the widely accepted concept in this forum on placing the retrograding planet in the previous sign. That means, do the overall analysis again, by turning the retrograde planet into the vedhak planet and place it in the previous sign.

Please test this concept to other charts for better understanding.
A person should not be too honest. Straight trees are cut first and honest people are screwed first.

Yes, slight amendment.
In the Rasi Chart :
When Saturn behaves like Mars, it also does not mean it turns into Mars. So the functional lordship of Saturn remains intact ie. Saturn remains a functional malefic for my Cancer Ascendant since it is ruling only the 7th Bhava by being placed in its own sign.
Saturn may exhibit behaviour of Mars by being retro, but also exhibit Saturnine qualities because of aspect by Venus. But Saturn still remains Saturn so it does not turn into a Yogakaraka.

I too am Cancer Ascendant,
My saturn is retrograde in 5th house, Scorpio - so then it becomes Mars in it's own sign?
Mars is in Aries in 10th house for me, and aspects saturn from it's 8th aspect.... Not sure what this does exactly then in this case.
So Saturn R. As "mars" isnt acting yogakarka since it's a functional malefic for my ascendant? Or was that only because it was in the 7th, in Capricorn for you?

Hi GNE
Saturn is functionally ne neutral for a Cancer Ascendant. Your Saturn turning retrograde in Scorpio, shows without considering other influences like aspects form other planets or associating with it, it becomes a PURE Mars in disguise - behaviour like Mars but not really Mars and hence not a Yogakaraka.
Mars aspecting it via the 8th aspect make your retrograde Saturn even more Mars like but again it is something in disguise although it is now even purer in Martian behaviour. The net result of this aspect also means the shubha effects increase (original Mars giving impetus to the disguised Mars).
If other planets like Mercury or Venus were to associate or aspect Saturn, then the purity of the disguised Mars would decrease since now it would act like its true self of Saturn. But here Saturn is sitting in Scorpio, its enemy sign, so along with the decrease in purity of a Mars in disguise, the shubha effects would also decrease - unlike in my case whether the retrograde Saturn reverts to Saturn or becomes a disguised Mars, it is still well placed by sign (because of Mars exaltation in Capricorn, and therefore same for disguised Mars too.).
Hope you see my point.

Thank you for that reply,
A question: would the "Mars"(retro saturn) in our case, bring elements of the houses mars rules (5,10) - though not yogakaraka effects as it's not true mars, but still create a form of raj yoga being placed in kendra(7th for you) or trine(5 for me) ?
Though yes, the article states it cannot create a raj yoga exactly. But would placement of kendra/trine lord in kendra/trine be making it stronger or more beneficial to us in this case anyway?
And you said for yourself that Venus aspects your "mars"(saturn), which is good.
But then for me you said that if mercury or venus associate/aspect saturn, it would decrease it's purity of mars in disguise, and not be so good. Yes?
No other planet aspects/sits with my Saturn, but I'm just trying to clarify.
I do have Jupiter+Moon sitting in Saturn's signs however, Cap+Aquarius.
And Mercury + Venus are in Saturn's nakshatra in pisces.

Hi khoo,
Suppose saturn is retro in aquarius.. Here mars is not exalted but saturn is powerful .. WHat would be the net result?
Since it behaves as mars and mars is in enemy sign, the aquarius power of the saturn will fail?

Hi GNE
Answer to your 3 questions.
Question 1
-------------
Since the retro Saturn is not a true Mars, it would not bring out the effects of the rulership of 5th and 10th of a Cancer Ascendant into the house where Saturn is place (7th in my case, 5th in yours0.
Question 2
-------------
Yes.
Question 3
-------------
Yes, planets in the signs of Saturn would alter the exact purity of the disguised Mars, up or down, depending whether the planets are friendly to Mars or not (here my up means it is more like Mars and less like Saturn, you can also define up in another way).

Hi Moksha Line
The disguised Mars in Aquarius will not well in an enemy's sign unlike Capricorn in my case where my disguised Mars becomes exalted.
But the net result you have to consider the various kinds of planets disposited by Saturn and also the various planets aspecting Saturn (see the thread with GEN above and also when I talk about my chart).

Hey Khoo,
Are you sure mercury retro acts like mars or any other planet retro for instance?
Because I experienced it different.. I think u have to test this concept on other concepts as well like Anuradha says..
I don't think a planet can completely change its characteristics to another planet when retro

hHi Moksha
In the first place have you tested the concept? You have not!!
In the second place, the author has tested the concept by giving many readings!!
If you look at Pacakadi Sambadhan, you know what is Vediak planet of each planet :
Sun is Venus but Sun never goes retro
Moon is Sun but Moon never goes retro
Mercury is Mars and is verified by the article but Mars is supposed to be beneficial for Mercury in the classics
Venus is Sun but the article uses Jupiter because Jupiter and Venus are both gurus and they thus stand at opposite ends of the spectrum of the things they believe in, when it comes down to actions (actions after all are initiated by motivations)
Mars is Mercury and is verified by the article
Jupiter is Sun but the article uses Venus, the same reason as explained for the Vedhak for Venus above
Saturn is Mars and is verified by the article (the article says classics use the Vedhak of Saturn as Sun but is not true, classics also use the Vedhak of Saturn as Mars but in the classics, the Vedhak of Saturn which is also Mars is beneficial)
