Hello all,

I'm wondering what exactly does it do when a planet has very low (or very high) shadbala?
I often hear people mention it during chart readings but I'm having no luck finding out what the total rating really ends up signifying to the person....

Does it not only weaken the planet but the houses the planet rules?
so say shadbala for mercury is very low, and it's cancer lagana - mercury rules 12 and 3rd houses, so would those houses thus become weaker too?

Does shadbala show the potential a planet has to effect one during transit/mahadasha positively?
Or perhaps shows the potential for it to fulfill any of it's raj yogas or aspects?

Or does shadbala weaken everything the planet signifies to the person?
But I have found this not to be so true - not only in myself, but friends charts I've noticed planets with very very low shadbala yet the person was very talented and life was full of things that planet represented.
My mercury for example is rated the lowest (5.6 rupas / 340 shadbala score), yet I work as an editor, solve puzzles often, have a great memory people have complimented me on aswell as quick thinking and math abilities...etc.
My friend has low jupiter with only 5 rupas, but is very religious, caring and gives charity to others, very much into philosophy and tutors students (science), also has great finances(working in medical field) and loves to travel / has travelled often to foreign lands and had no problems...

Anyway,
I've been wondering for a long time what shadbala points really do in regards to a planet.

Thank you

Shadbala means six fold strength, it is used to measure the strength of the planets in the chart.Shadbala consists of

a] Sthan bala
b} Dig bala
c} Kaal bala
d} Chestha bala
e} Naisargikka bala
f} Drik bala.

Each of the above balas can be used for such specific things as denoted by its name,
and composite Shadbala can be used for ascertaining the relative impact of the planets in natives life irrespective of its nature (good or bad}.

Dear GNE
Shri B V Raman has written a good book on this topic named "GRAHA AND BHAVA BALAS".
I recommend you to read this book minimum once.
सर्वे भवन्तु सुखिनः।
सर्वे सन्तु निरामयाः।

Astrologically yours.

Thank you for the replies.
I found a cheap priced version of that book online, subramanianp, so I'm going to look into that, thanks.

vancithottil,
So I suppose a planet with low shadbala score, but for example really high Chestha bala would show lots of strength in regards to the planet when it comes to what chestha bala represents. Same for the other bala's.

I'll look into my mercury (lowest shadbala....however I seem to do mercury things easily and lot of them in life - job editing(video), business / writing, memory and puzzle solving quickly, sales/communicating often, etc.)

Thank you vanchithottil.

My shadbala was:

Sun - 10.9 / 652
Moon - 6.6 / 397
Mars - 8.5 / 513
Mercury - 5.7 / 341 << lowest
Jupiter - 6.4 / 385 < just below the min.requirement
Venus - 6.3 / 382
Saturn - 5.9 / 357

Safe to assume planets below the minimum requirements , give more malefic (or just less benefic) effects in dasha periods , and/or transits?

And what about planets with extremely high (like my sun) ? Only benefic results?

I looked through the other bala's (chesta, drig, sthana, dig, chesta, kaala, etc.) and noticed that sun is highest in all except sthana; which has mars the highest.
mercury lowest or 2nd lowest in all bala's. ..... strange, as I feel I do a lot of mercurial things in life with ease, and my work has been very much mercury sort.

And what is Vaiseshikamsa bala?
my sun has " 9 " rating in that.

Hi! I see I am a little late to this discussion, but I'm trying to understand the meaning of Shad bala numbers. According to my "Jagannatha Hora" software, each of my planets is given a percentage. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what the ranges are?

I see that you have been talking about numbers, but percentage points are different, so I don't know how to interpret them.

My planets are all over 100%, which makes it additionally hard for me to even guess what the numbers mean, since "percent" literally means "out of 100"!

Any explanation would be much appreciated! Thx! :)
