First House signifies Self, Personality, General Health, Physical constitution, Fame, intelligence. In Sanskrit it is called "Tanu Bhava" Which means "Body". This house signifies body as a whole. First house help us analyse how a person will put himsel in public, what his social status, general appearance, pearsonality and image will be in public especially family and friends. THis house is most important hosue of chart. Because It affects all other houses of the chart directly or indirectly, there is no need to explain why.
It signifies our strengths and weaknesses, our psyche/psychology at a general level and our tolerance and adjusting capabilities in society at a very general level. It's association with different houses gives us different fruits, like with 6th or 8th it gives us diseases and enemies, with ninth it shows spiritual enlightment and so on.
In BPHS it is written:
"Maharishi Parashar replies. Physique, appearance, intellect (or the organ of intelligence, i.e. brain), complexion of the body, vigour, weakness, happiness, grief and innate nature are all to be guessed through the ascending Rasi."
In Medical Astrology, First house denotes Head, brain and forehead. In Ayurvedic context it denotes bones and Pitta
Dosha and Satva Guna. In Relation first House signifies Self, Father's mother and Mother's father. It's Karak is Sun and it conincides with the Aries sign.

These are just general guidelines. Like a student of kinder garden starts learning making sentences, my posts are meant for new students of astrology. These are basically my notes which I prepared when I was doing PGDIA. These notes are meant to help new students and to refresh basics of experts astrologers. Lagna and lagna lord is most important part of the chart. As all the chart reading is ultimately connected to Lagna Lord. If Lagna/ 1L is well disposed, all the chart gains strength and vice versa.
Lagna lord is usually benefic planet and in rare cases it is considered neutral. But overall result, it is decided only after considering aspects etc. Birth details helps.

It's an interesting thread.
It's true that the lagna lord is very very important in one's chart. I have a few questions:
(a) Tagore has Meena rashi and meena lagna. His lagna lord Jupiter is situated in Karkata. And the lagna lord is having a wonderful parivartana yoga with the fifth lord moon. Is this the reason why Tagore was gifted with very good looks, sublime mind and had wonderful health and fame?
(b) On the other hand, Einstein's lagna lord Mercury is located in Meena. Debilitated. But was offset by Neechbhanga raj yoga. And hence gained almost exalted state. Do you think this is the reason why Einstein was gifted with charming looks in his young days and of course good health and recognition?
From my experiences:
1. Rahu in lagna in dhanu, Jupiter in karkata—person is slightly lazy. bright and radiant. gets violent when angry. pretty intelligent. has very good health. soft spoken. loves to travel. naturally not always very responsible, but once takes responsibility, the person can handle extremely difficult situations. The person is a teacher.
2. Vrisha lagna, sun and saturn in lagna, lagnapati in mercury with mercury— person has become bald at the age of 30. Extremely energetic. Very good speaker. Is in the broadcasting line, a radio RJ. Very short tempered. Has fixed likes and dislikes—wants other people to obey him without question. Goes out of way to help people. But is very blunt and harsh in speech.
3. Vrishchik lagna—mangal in lagna—the person is brilliant. has tremedous leadership qualities. is extremely courageous. has brilliant health. sparkling eyes. He is easily noticeable in a large gathering. Nobody can miss him.
These are what I have found in chart of people I know. I hope this can carry this interesting thread forward.

"--The essence of astrology is in understanding the meaning of the planets. The meaning of the signs, houses, aspects and other astrological factors is determined by the planets which rule and significate them. Astrology is nothing but the science of the planets, as the forces of the stars are governed by and manifest through them.--"
In all above said examples this point is clearly evident.
Let us refresh our memory by revising the basic properties of planets written in all text books, in the very first pages and chapters which we tend to overturn and ignore.
As First house indicate our Self, Personality, intelligence, psychology. We take note of these basic properties in this context.
In BPHS it is written:
"14-15. Grah cabinet. Of royal status are Surya and Candr, while Mangal is the Army chief. Prince-apparent is Budh. The ministerial Grahas are Guru and Sukr. Sani is a servant. Rahu and Ketu form the Grah Army.
So, People who are influenced by Sun will have the characteristics of the King, (how many and which one will be decided by the degree of the Sun in house and strength of the Sun, the star the sun is and so on. Similarly taking note of following characteristics we can determine the complexion, psychology, intelligence, thinking, temperament, guna (Sattva, raja tama) pradhanta, element (Panch mahabhut) dominance in a person's personality.
Obviously, the resultant should be calculated based on the the degree of the planet in house and strength of the Planet, avastha of planet, the star the planet is and so on.
Another notable point is that in cases where multiple planets are having effect, the resultant personality will show added features of all planets, and again which planet will give which characteristic and how much of that characteristic will be dependent on the relative strength of planets, avasthas, postion and all other factors which influence result of a planet.
In coming posts we will see other characteristics of planets. We can clearly see these characteristics in the persons who are influenced by specific planet. I emphasize that we should not only learn the word that is used here to characteristic, instead what mean that specific mord means and what characteristics that word denote.
For example, When we say that Sun denotes King and a person influenced by Sun will have characteristics of a king, then it is automatically understood that the person influenced by sun will be authoratarian, hot tempered, justice lover, like to give opinion, is a leader and brave, courageous etc. Similarly qualities of a queen should be imagined in a person being influenced by Moon and so on.
Also about the characteristics, which are described below we should use this method.

Effect of First Lord in various Houses
In the First House:
First Lord in first house make "Dvibharya yog" Means he have two wife. Second wife may be a legal wife because of second marriage or may be an illegal wife or extra marital affair. If the Lord is aspected by saatvic planets then there may not be second wife but the attaraction to ladies other than wife strongly prevails.
The person is hardworking, famous in his community, enjoys good health and material happiness, is physically and mentally active, loves to live on own earnings, has good self respect. If Lagna is aspected by malefic or lagna lord is weak or afflicted then above results will decrease as per it's association.
In the Second House:
Person will have good financial position. Will be famous. If the Lagna lord is well placed person will be a good speaker and serious about his responsibilities toward family. They may have more than one wife. THey are good hearted and will have good eyes.
