Question regarding Malefics

Hi everyone,

Apologies for the re-post but I didn't know there was a students section in the beginning and posted this to the "other questions" room. Here is my post again. Hope this time I will get an answer.


I read various lines about malefics but I am confused as to what exactly is meant by a malefic.

An example of a text: Should a malefic be in the 4th, identical with an inimical Rāśi, counted from Moon, while there is no benefic in a Kendra, the child will lose its mother in a premature manner.

Ok I got the above. It is pretty simple. The Malefics are Saturn, Sun, Mars, Rahu, Ketu & the waning moon. Now what thoroughly confuses me is sometimes a malefic becomes a benefic in a chart. When such an event occurs, should we count the malefic-turned-benefic as a malefic while reading the above text (the example) or should it be counted as a benefic.


And also is the only way for a malefic to turn into a benefic by rulership of certain houses or is there any other way also?


And my last question is related to 'maran karaka'. For ex: Saturn is in the lagna. The lagna is considered very auspicious (as far as I know) and any planet placed in it is supposed to be powerful as well. But when Saturn is in the lagna, it is in a 'maran karaka' sthan. So how will that affect the outcome of Saturn? Will it be powerful or will it be weak? Also, even if it is in a 'maran karaka' by virtue of being in the lagna, it should still have some good qualities too.

I see a lot of replies in other threads but not a single one in any of my threads. Why is that? I haven't asked that hard a question. I am pretty sure there are a lot of people who know the things I have asked and yet I receive no reply.

Can anyone tell me the reason or better answer my questions.

Thanks for replying. According to your answer, I still cannot understand why we should call malefics functional benefics if they still retain their malefic nature. I thought if a malefic turned into a functional benefic, it would lose its malefic nature in the process.

If the malefic will still give malefic results during its dashas then why call it a benefic at all? Maybe I am thinking from the point of view of absolutes and that is why I cannot grasp the concept but it is very confusing.

And also I have another question, if a malefic planet is strong in shadbala does it mean that the planet will bring about very strong malefic events? If this logic holds true, then the reverse must be true also. I.e. if a malefic planet is weak, then the malefic events must be weak in nature.

But this logic is very confusing to me as I have heard that we do pujas and wear gems because a certain planet is weak. But if a malefic planet is weak and will give weak malefic results then isn't that already what we desire? Why wear a gem?

Thanks both to bvrsishya & nrjtrvd. Thank you guys for helping me out.

Bvrsishya, I found your analogy to be very helpful. I think I understand now that we cannot forget that malefics will always retain some of their malice no matter what. And using the same logic, benefics will always retain some of their benediction no matter what.

I am reading on my own and you guys know how confusing it is for beginners.

The malefics indicated are natural malefics only. A reading of the preceding stanzas of the chapter will indicate whether or not to include Rahu/Ketu.

If you are a beginner, then I will suggest that you start with a "beginner's astrology" book. It will be easier to digest the fundamentals.

Not to be disrespectful or anything but in my opinion it is better to fully understand things and proceed rather than ignore important topics. A lot of people use functional benefics/malefics and intuitively also it makes sense.

Just like people behave differently in different situations, it would be logical to assume that planets (which are supposed to have human like qualities) would do the same too.

But thank you for caring enough to reply to the thread. I have problems regarding getting answers from people. According to nrjtrvd, I ask hard questions and he says maybe that is why I don't get answers. I don't know. I'm just sincerely trying to learn Astrology and if the questions I come up with are hard, I don't know what else to do.

I asked another question in another astrology forum and it is the same story. No answer

Thank you for your suggestion. Yes I am trying to read the charts of friends but it is very tough and I am having a very hard time.

I will definitely test my theories out because if it can't be verified then what is the use of it? Yes I would love to move out of the rank of amateur to a professional. Hope I do get there someday.
