Can anyone explain the rules of combustion?

Are planets combust only if they and sun belong to same pada nakshathra?

Dear mgprasad,

3 pointers about combustion. In the classics different degrees are given at which distance from Sun diff planets become technically combust or dagdha. However:

1. Practical experience has shown that combustion only becomes effective when any planet is within 3 degrees of Sun (some take within 5 degs).

2. The effect of combustion is mostly mental, i.e. it gives mental pain, distress, tensions and sometimes psychological disorders, regarding the Karaktatwa and Lordship of the combust planet. Example if 5th L is combust, the person is likely to suffer tension and distress regarding Higher edu and children.

But combustion (even full combustion) does not affect the material fulfilment of the karaktatwas of the combust planets. i.e. if venus is in the 4th and combust, it in no way means that the person will live in a rundown shack (4th rules House), a digbali Ven will most likely give him/her a nice place to live. However family life may be bad and give tensions (4th is also Sukh Bhav - happiness).

3. Combustion is most effective when it happens in Agni rashis (Ar, Leo, Sagi) and Vayu Rashis (Gem, Lib and Aqua). In Bhu rashis (Tau, Vir Capr) combustion is medium in strength. In Jala Rashis (Can Sco Pisc) combustion is practically useless as Sun, an agni tatwa planet, is very weak in Jala rashis, so cannot do much harm.

So the rule of thumb is stronger the Sun, more harmful are the effects of combustion.

Another view on combustion seems to be that it impacts the material plane but things on the mental plane get better. Something like if mercury is second lord and combust, wealth being on the materialistic plane takes a hit while intelligence which is on the mental plane flourishes (Budh-aditya yoga).

This is my view of it, from both a practical and theoretical view. Standardised degree limts for instance is something I don't agree with. I use a Planetary visibility program to check the dates of Heliacal risings and settings and, true to Hellenistic and Perso-arabic techniques, use these to predict times of events. The standardised degree limits do not predict events accurately when used in this manner.

It also makes sense conceptually to say that the material things suffer since it is the physical view of the planet in the sky which is obstructed not its actual presence in the Cosmos. Besides, I have first-hand experience of a combust Saturn Antardasa period being absolutely woeful for material progress.

My experience is that since the outward expression suffers, both material and non material things suffer. But primarily it is the emotional (non material ) things that suffer, for eg, love and affection, leadership qualities, expression of opinion or thought, etc

Because of this inability to express correctly, he becomes totally dependent on EXTERNAL factors for his success or lack of it. So in a way he has no support from the bhava signified by the combust planet. for eg if 4/9 lord venus is combust, his parents may be so perpetually busy in their own activities that they are totally detached from him (or her) so if things turn bad for him, he cannot turn to them for any assistance as they are simply unavailable. So he is always dependent on external surroundings for his actions. That means the natural drive that a planet would give is reduced to a certain extent. But materially things may not be bad to that extent. he may still have the necessities provided (of course when external significations suffer the internal ones are also bound to get affetected)

That is my interpretation of what is said and written in this forum as well as personal experience.
