Satishji,
you are absolutely right, we are here to learn astrology and i have learned a lot by discussing astrology with you, Vaughnji, Janakji and other learned members in this discussion board.
i have observed that in some combinations in the astrological classics it's written that a planet should be in the exaltation rashi and in some combination it's written that the planet should be exalted. if a planet is exalted in the whole rashi it doesn't make much sense to write it that way but if a planet is exalted upto a certain degrees it definitely makes a lot of sense. so this is also something which i find very confusing.
"Bhavata Kutuham" is a nice book. i am sure you will enjoy reading it.
Janakji,
the sages have already tested the theories on many birthcharts and written the principles on the basis of that so i don't think we should doubt their understanding of the planets.
i really don't know the logic behind why the planets are exalted in inimical/neutral signs but just because i don't know the logic behind it i don't think i should diapprove it.
no, i didn't check the theory about jup+mars doing well in cancer before making my statement on it. i am sure the ancient sages have tested the theories on several birthcharts before coming to such a conclusion.
i am not an astrologer so i have a limited no. of charts and so it's really difficult to get 5 charts for every combination on astrology.
i have one chart where jup and mars both are exalted and thus aspecting each other. the person is running the dasha of jup and he is doing okay. i know it's not the combination you have talked about but still thought of mentioning it because it's a rare combination.
When is a planet considered exalted

i absolutely agree with this point.

i don't agree to this point at all. it's because if they didn't want every tom frack and harry to know astrology why did they take all the trouble of writing books on it. instead of taking the difficult path of writing book in such a way that people don't understand the hidden meaning of the yoga's they could have easily chosen a more easy path which is not writing a book at all.
Here are two examples from Phaladeepika.
1) “If Mars be in the 2nd house, the person concerned will be adverse or ugly faced, devoid of learning and wealth, and will be dependent on bad people.
2) “If Saturn should be posited in the 5th house, the person born will be roaming about, will have lost his reason, will be bereft of children, wealth, and happiness.â€

Janakji,
"I think before writing the above quoted statement you should have taken enough time to ponder on what I want to convey. I have not bothered to find out, but many complain that the method to make an explosive device is readily available on the net, and you know how many terrorists use them to kill innocent people. And remember that BPHS is also a dialogue between a guru and a disciple."
i have never come across any person so far who has such disrespect for Parashar and his BPHS.
"In so many of your posts I have noticed that you are asking about the logic behind the statement made by somebody. And so many times, I am sorry to say, but I have noticed that you yourself do not apply any logic while putting forward your point of view."
maybe i don't write the logic behind what i am saying but if somebody had asked me the logic behind something i had written i would definitely have given the answer, of course if i knew the answer because i don't know the logic behind half the things in astrology, like if somebody asks me the logic behind why chandra-mangal yoga is an auspicious yoga i won't be able to answer because i never looked for a logic behind it. according to the classics it is auspicious yoga and i believe that. i ask people to tell me the logic behind something they have written because that will help me learn something.
"Please read Rajitha’s post and see why Saturn is exalted in Libra. Now logically how can you find this connection very satisfying? Saturn is exalted in Libra, the sign ruled by Venus, even though Saturn is usually considered to inhibit Venus. And while Mars is exalted in Capricorn, a Saturn’s sign, Saturn is in its fall in Aries, Mars’s sign. Why should one combination of Mars-Saturn symbolism be beneficial while the other is not? Of course you will argue that planets are not identical with the signs they rule: Mars is not Aries and Saturn is not Capricorn. But if we think logically, we should expect Mars in Capricorn to be just as conflicting as Saturn in Aries. Clearly, whatever logic there is in the assignment of planets to rulership is lacking in the assignment of planets to exaltation."
i agree with you that there is no logic behind the exaltation rashi of sat and mars then should we reject this theory just because we have not found the logic behind it? i don't know about you but i am not a genius so it's very obvious that i can't see the logic behind something that Parashar and the other sages could see and just because i can't see the logic i can't reject the theory.
"To understand the intricacies of astrology, one must analyze as many charts as possible. Just gulping down the throat something written by somebody won’t help."
i never said that one can learn astrology just by reading books on it, it's never possible that way, but one has to read books to understand the basic concepts. how can one analyze charts if he doesn't know the basics of astrology? if you start challenging the basics of astrology then on what basis will you analyze a chart? you have to take the basics into consideration before analyzing a chart, because if you want to doubt something it can go to any extent? you may start asking the logic of 10th house being the house of profession and sun being the significator of soul?
"I just saw your post about the strength of Janma Lagna and Chandra Lagna. How come everything is not given clearly and openly in our classics? According to you it should be there in a book, and should be very easy to understand. In any applied branch it's absolutely a must to have practical knowledge."
i never said that everything will be there in a book and it's easy to understand. i said that we should never doubt what's written by the sages and we should not believe that they tried to hide something from us, it would have been impossible for them to write a book the way you would have liked it to be with the logics behind every combination they talked about. In spite of trying to hide everything from us parashar still took the trouble of writing 2 vols of bphs, so if he had to write all those details that you are talking about then he would have finished writing 7 vols and it still would not have reached your level of satisfaction. i don't believe one can get everything in an astrology book. if i could get every information from books on astrology then i would not have been here discussing and asking questions on astrology.
at the end of this i would like to say only one thing, we may have different opinions on this particular topic but i have the greatest respect for you and your knowledge in the subject. i am extremely sorry if you have felt offended by my recent posts addressed to you.

dear Janakji,
firstly thank you so much for sharing the charts. i am sure that Parashar will never feel offended because he has written the theories to be applied in charts and he is confident that his theories are absolutely correct.
coming to the charts one by one:
Chart1
in the chart the moon is in the 2nd house so the sloka you have talked about doesn't apply in this case.
Chart2
in this chart the moon is in the 6th house with malefic sun, but it will not be death inflicting for the child, it's because venus a natural benefic is in a kendra.
(refer BPHS translated by Girish Chand Sharma Chapter 12 "Anti-dotes to Evils", sloka 2 states that "if even one among Mercury, Jupiter and Venus happens to be placed in a Kendra house(1,4,7,10 are Kendra houses) the combination destroys all the evilsas darkness is eliminated only by the rising of the Sun.")
Chart3
in this chart the moon is in the 8th house aspected by malefic mars but again jupiter and venus 2 natural benefics are in the kendras. so the same sloka from BPHS i talked about earlier again applies here. it cancels the death inflicting capability of the moon aspected by mars.
Chart4
here again the moon is in the 6th house afflicted by malefic mars and the sun, but again jupiter a natural benefic is in the 10th house a kendra which is the anti-dote for the evil caused by afflicted moon in a dusthana. it's again in reference to the sloka i have mentioned above.
Chart5
here moon is again in the 6th house conjunct a malefic and aspected by a benefic but it won't cause death because the native was born in the daytime and the moon is a waning moon.
(ref BPHS translated by Girish Chand Sharma page 173, " Mandavya Maharishi declares that, to the child born during the day time in the dark half of the Lunar month and to the child born during the night in the bright half of the month even when the Moon occupies the 6th, 8th or 12th with good and bad aspects, there will be no death.
So it shows why these people whose birthcharts you have shared with me are still alive.
a few points i saw in the charts,
chart 1: the native is a good communicator and will have a lot of valour, is good in studies, is the only child and has conflicts with his father. he may have eye problems or may be wears spectacles since an early age. since dec,2004 time has not been favourable for this person.
chart2: the native is deeply spiritual, must be suffering from health problems. can be the astrologer you were talking about. may have a younger brother. was very good in studies and has done his studies abroad. will have conflicts with family, marriage life doesn't look great. the native is doing very well in career. his children will do very well in life. the moon dasha the native is running now is good but in this period the native maybe is suffering from some health problems and it can be of the mouth.
chart3: the native has a lot of valour and is aggressive and assertive, must be very bold. the person has not much problems healthwise, was good in studies, have conflicts with brothers, he is creative, and maybe works in a creative profession. will be successful in career. has good relation with family members, stays in a luxurious apartment, own cars, the person is going through a lot of problems since 1998 and may have got married sometime after july, 2004. marriage life is not great.
chart4: the native was not very good in studies, may have done his education abroad,a lot of problems in married life. career looks average and again a foreign connection is there, will have conflicts with father. may have gone abroad in his mars dasha. rahu dasha is quite okay.
chart5: a very bold person, someone who has a lot of endurance. the person should be very spiritual. doesn't have any younger brother/sister. was very good in studies, education abroad, must be settled abroad. career looks great. marriage life is very good. going through a very favourable period since 1997.
maybe the predictions won't be correct because i don't know whether the charts are of male/female so if some of the charts are of females they may have not gone for a career about which i have predicted in most of the charts.

Rajitha,
thanks for the kind words.
Janakji,
i am really happy that i have achieved more than 20% accuracy.
i checked the lagna of chart1 in another software and it is showing aries lagna. these free astr-softwares sometimes make errors when casting birthcharts. could you please suggest some good astro-softwares(of course free) where there is no chance of a wrong chart being casted? i can't use the jagannath hora software because in my computer it can't be installed as it is a macintosh so please suggest some softwares other than that.
thank you so much for sending me the traits that people born with uranus in the lagna has.

hello Janakji,
i can't download Junior Jyotish as well because it can't be installed in a macintosh computer but still thanks for the suggestion.
yes, i absolutely agree that saturn will also have it's effect as it is aspecting my lagna very closely.
could you please do me a favour? there are 3 birthcharts the lagna's of which i am not sure about. i don't know whether the lagna's are correct or not because i have started doubting the astro-software i use, so could you please tell me what the correct lagna's are for the charts, whose birthdetails i have given below.
chart1: 22nd Jan, 1981, 3:05 PM Meerut, India
chart2: 11th July, 1946, 12:07 AM Cooch Bihar, West Bengal, India
chart3: 21st August, 1975 5:00 PM Valsad, Gujarat

Indiraji,
i don't use the same software that you use. i use the software in the website indianastrology dot com. in another website where there is an astro-software the lagna is the same as in the jagannath hora software and the indianastrology software. the name of the website is planetarypositions dot com. there is another software and it is showing the same result. i don't know how the birthcharts casted can be wrong when 3-4 astro-software are showing the same lagna. i don't know about the other charts but the chart2 is definitely pisces lagna. the chart has been prepared by some great astrologers and all of them has given it pisces lagna and not aries lagna. i have started doubting the validity of these softwares on the net. i wish i could cast a chart manually, then i could at least check which software is calculating the correct lagna.
Janakji,
could you please tell us the names of the websites, the softwares of which you are using for casting the charts.

Hi all,
It was interesting to go through the topic.
One more discourse:
I have noticed, that great teachers venus and jupiter are exalted in brahman signs so tried to look to which varna signs other planets go in their exaltation/debilitation. Resultas are:
Exalted Debilitated
Brahmanas signs (duties
of serving as priests and
teachers)
Sco - Moon
Pisc Venus Mercury
Can Jupiter Mars
Kshatriyas (duties of
administration, battle,
and law enforcement)
Ari Sun Saturn
Vaishyas (customarily
agriculture, commerce)
Lib Saturn Sun
Shudras (duties to provide
service to members of
the other three varnas)
Tau Moon -
Vir Mercury Venus
Cap Mars Jupiter
Planets, which are exalted in brahman signs, are debilitated in shudra signs and vice versa. Planet, which is exaltetd in kshatriyas sign is debilitated in vaishyas sign and vice versa.
It seems, tat planet carry duties of the sign it is placed. Exaltetd planet is when duties are most suitable, and debilitated - when duties are less suitable.
For example, venus and jupiter perform up to their best, when they are free to determine themselves and work as teachers and priests. Moon, mercury and mars perform up to their best when they have most hard restrictions and guidelines and serve to others. Shudres sign gives those needed restrictions. Similar is with sun and saturn.
This is a reason, to my understanding, why some planets are placed not in the most friendly sign at their exaltation point.
what do you think?

Hi Porcija
It is interesting to note that Brahmanas and Shudras are one of the diametrically opposite groups and Kashatriyas and Vaishyas constitute another one diametrically opposite group.
Then the planet in the deep exaltaion in Kashatriyas scale up one rung of the ladder to Brahmanas (since Kashatriyas exist to serve the Bramanas). Similarly the planet in the deep fall in Kashatriyas scaled down two rungs of the ladder to Shudras which exist to serve Kashatriyas (besides the other two groups).
Wonder whether it has any connection to another theory propounded by Visti Larsen in a paper on Analyzing Professions.
[quote]
Counting in order beginning from Krittka nakshatra, in modules of three, we get the following order of lordships:
1st 2nd 3rd
Sun Moon Mars
Rahu Jupiter Saturn
Mercury Ketu Venus
With this we get three working-classes of society. The upper class ruled by the politicians (sun), business men (mercury) and organized crime or unions (rahu).
The middle class ruled by public servants (moon), teachers and instructors (jupiter) and the priests and mystics (Ketu).
The lower class are the blue-collar workers, or those who have to exert brawns rather than brains (Saturn), the security force including police and military (Mars) and the entertainment sector who wish to attract and capture the minds of the public (Venus).
These class-divisions do not speak of the financial standing of those in them.
Now, as a start you can expect to find that the natives amatyakaraka is associated with one of the three grahas indicating the working-class of the native. I.e. in the chart supplied Mars is the amatyakaraka and receives the rasi dristi of both Moon and Ketu which belong to the middle
class and academical sector.

So you can see the classification by occupations by planets is very different based on his scheme. For example, Venus now rules entertainment occupations instead of Brahmin professions.

Counting in order beginning from Krittka nakshatra, in modules of three, we get the following order of lordships:
1st 2nd 3rd
Sun Moon Mars
Rahu Jupiter Saturn
Mercury Ketu Venus
