Prem999,

Nos. 1, 2 and 3 - Yes.

No 4 - Vishnu + Lakshmi - Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Moon (By another view, Mercury, Saturn, Venus and Moon, since Vishnu is associated with Jupiter by some and with Saturn by others. Mercury is also associated with Vishnu.)

No 5 - MMM 51 or 108 times followed by Devi Suktam - Rahu-Ketu (especially Rahu), Kala Sarpa, Saturn (Some associate Shiva with Jupiter, while others associate him with Saturn - so, either way, both Saturn and Jupiter are covered by nos. 4 and 5)

No 6 - Devi Suktam - Rahu and all planets.

Similarly, Purusha Suktam in no. 4 is also for all planets. Some would regard even MMM for all planets.

No 7 - Durga Saptashati recital - Rahu and all planets.

Feeding crows and charity - Saturn and Rahu-Ketu.

In Hinduism there are so many mantras to choose ,a person can choose as his /her wish. Ultimately these mantras are pushing towards spiritualism from materialism. Means what a person wants today that may not be needed tomorrow. These matras kills materialistic desires upto certain level & person becomes detached progressivaly.
Like a small kid goes to market, that kid likes everything & want to buy everything but once that kid becomes adult & mature and have money also don’t want to buy those things.
After watching the complexity of kalyuga Goswami Tulsidas recommended only Ram Nam chanting because he saw Hindus are lost in so many Vedas ,Upanishads & Purans as well as sanskrut language.Hindus were confused. So a person can chant any mantra but not to get confused that which mantra is strongest. All are same. The end result is same.Hence we can enjoy the choice of mantras in hinduism without thinking strength & power of mantra or stotra.
Happy New Year to all

astrohajare,

You are very right, Everyone has the right to choose and I have chosen these as the most benefic of all mantras.

I have simply expressed my opinion here, as everyone has the right to express opinions.

I don't compel anyone to follow my opinion. It's up to the members what they want to do.

astrohazare,

agree with you that all mantras have same goal of leading us towards spirituality, however i believe simplicity of a few selected mantras worshipping some powerful gods allow us to get into the groove first of keeping prayers in our daily schedule. once that is started , other avenues open up as and when we qualify. though we have the option to choose, as per my understanding - mantras including bija mantras are extremely effective. no mantra is lesser , they perhaps have a different role to play in various phases on the path towards ultimate goal. one will put us on track, another will enrich our experiences .
this is strictly my understanding based on what i read/experienced.

Dear Saindvavi Ji,
I am the first time user on this site and not sure if I am putting my information on the right site. I am hoping you will be able to see and can assist me with your vast knowledge. I am going through Maha Shanidash and going through very difficult time. My date of birth:
October 4th, 1956, 3:15 AM, Lucknow, India
Please assist me what should I be expecting and what I should be doing to make it less painful this process. How long this will last? What will happened after this dasha?
I greatly appreciate your help in this matter.
KET

Ramananji.....

Please find my comments in the below quoted Post... Your response on my comments welcome

1 - Invoke Ganesha by any Ganesha hymn (Ganesha Atharvashirsha is best) - Ketu?

KET Comments : Lord Ganesh Control all planets. Therefore you find astrologer when they wuld like to predict they seek blessings of Guru and Lord Ganesh

2 - Offer water to the rising Sun, when its rays are not hot or recite Gayatri Mantra only 3 times, not more. : Sun

KET Comments : Offering water to the rising sun through Mantra ( Surya Namaskar) is to apease Lord Shiva ( through Surya)
Gayatri Mantra has to be recited daily by Brahmins( dorned Sacred threads) irrespective of whether Sun is malefic or not. The daily recital of Gayati Mantras by Brahmins could be 1008 or more or less like ( 108+72+48) 248 tmes this depends on daily Karma performances of a Brahmin like Sandhyavandanam, Rishi Tharpan, Pitru Tharpan or Ritual rites of ancestors.
Therefore reciting Gayatri Mantra three times only (Malefic Sun) shouldnt be preached nor should be advocated as Personal Opinion etc. I have read in ancient books which refers reciting Gayatri Mantras for 10,008 or 50001 times in a time frame for Sun debiltated charts

3 - Recite Hanuman Chalisa : Mars & Saturn
4 - Recite either Purusha Sukta from Rig Veda, or Dashavatara Stotra by Jayadev (from Gita Govinda), : followed by any hymn for Lakshmi (Shri Suktam from Rig Veda is best) : Venus/Moon ?

5 - Recite Mahamrityunjaya Mantra 51 times (108 times if the problem is great) - ?

KET ... This Mantra has got special power, This mantra has been prescribed by Lord Shiva to Shukra(Venus), Lord Shiva uttered this mantra in Shukra's ears and informed use this matra only when the life is in danger (SOS basis). otherwise mantra will lose the charm and power.

6 - Recite Devi Suktam from Rig Veda 11 times : Venus / Moon ?[/quote]

Ramananji, it makes me think if it is true that the mantras hav been locked by Lord shiva for kaliyug? like I had read a while ago that in days gone by Shreevidya was not revealed to everybody, certain mantras were not given out. The Guru used to see if the person was pure enough to receive the mantra. I feel the more mantras are exposed on the internet the more inactive they become, instead a simple heartfelt prayer to god is sometimes answered quickly. Mantras used by some people can be disastrous, so I feel a simple prayer comes from the heart and gets quick response instaed of all the long and complicated mantras which hav to be recitd for so laborious rounds etc. sometimes we see a mantra and think Oh this could solve my problems and if in a few months u see no improvement u feel deflated. whereas there is a story that naradji once asked Lord Vishnu who was his best devotee. Naradji thought that surely God would say taht it was naradji who constantly keeps saying Narayan ,Narayan. but Godreplied he considered a poor farmer as his best devotee even though that farmer remembered God only 3 times a day at the 3 sandhya kaals, so God is pleased by innocence and unassuming nature. These days in my experience I feel when we sit down to do mantras we expect God HAS to fulfill our wishes at any cost cos we r doing the mantras and the bhav is lost completely.Bhav is the most important and it is responded to quickly. what is ur opinion on this? It is best to keep it short and simple. who has so much time for the mantras etc especially in Kaliyug? after a few years of doing mantras intensely that is my feeling, best to say a simple prayer to God and just do your duties, that is enough. I might be wrong but after a few years of it I feel kind of disillusioned in a way. it is best to approach God from the heart and in a simple manner. He knows our situation and will send us help as long as we realise our faults and try to improve our selves without hurting others by our thought words and deeds.
That is my feeling, not evrybody will agree but that is how i feel after a few years of long hours of complicated mantras and practises.Best to keep it simple.

Dear Saindhavi,

A lot of good information in what you have shared. It stresses a lot on disciplined approach to propitiation on a daily basis that helps one tide over all challenges. I do want to point out a couple of things. The trikala sandhya vandana is not the exclusive right of brahmins but rather the duty of the first three varnas per our hindu dharma. In fact, one's education starts with bramhopadesam which is done in upanayanam. The nature of education while would be different based on what a person is preparing for in one's life the end goal for all souls is self realization and hence brahmopadesam.

Aditya refers to all sons of aditi (Rig mentions 7 but Vishnu Purana has other sons of Aditi including Vamana listed) and includes Mitra, Savitr, and Vivasvat (the one we know very well as Surya). Vivasvat was the most knowledgeable and father of manu and to whom the Lord Vishnu first did Gitopadesha (as mentioned in Srimad Bhagavad Gita). It is this Vivasvat whom we track in our astrology. Savitr responsibility is health, immortality and righteousness. He is always benevolent. In fact, all Aditya hymns chanted between sunset and sunrise actually reaches him. The Rig Veda though points out that the Vivasvat (day time sun) and Savitr share a lot of characteristics. It is for this reason that their invocation is interchanged a lot of times. The vedas go to the extent of declaring that Savitr is the benevolent aspect of Vivasvat.

Now coming to saying Gayathri Mantra, one can chant it anytime during day or night as it invokes the ever benevolent Savitr who can give courage, health, wealth and immortality through knowledge and realization. It is not an option for any hindu to not say the gayathri mantra irrespective of where Sun is placed in his horoscope. Another logical way to look at this is, the vedas whose sole purpose is for the betterment and self realization of human kind will never codify a practice like Sandya vandanam to be done 3 times a day when it can negatively affect a good part of population. It would be cruel to force one to do something that will definitely harm one and that is contrary to what the Vedas are. If a practice is meant only for one set of people, the vedas will actually say it explicitly as it done in many other homas/vratas etc. The only requirement for Sandya Vandana is that a Guru initiate you for that carries a good booster charge. Hope this helps.

Regards,
Venkat
Sudarshang

This is for those who are hard pressed for time. There is a beautiful shloka in Shri Vedanta Desikan's Paaduka Sahasram:

kanakaruchirA kAvyAKhyAthA shanaIscharaNOchithA
shrithagurubuDhA BhAsvadhrUpa dhvijADhipasEvithA
vihithaviBhavA nithyam viShNO: padhE maNipAdhukE!
thvamasi mahathI vishvEShAm na: shuBhA grahamaNdalI

There are no restrictions to chant this - any one can chant, need not obtain from an acharyan etc. One can chant any number of times, whenever time is available. Even if you are able to chant this shloka only once a day, even that is fine. By the grace of Thiruvaranganaayiga samtha Thiruvaranganathan's divya Paaduka (Lord Sri Ranganatha's holy sandals) anyone that chants this will receive the Lord's blessings without fail.
Sudarshang

Here is one more small sholaka that has no restrictions on chanting except that it should be chanted in the morning. One can chant this as soon as one wakes up from bed. It is from the famous Venkateswara Suprabhatam:

sooryendu bhauma budha vaakpati kaavya sauri
svarbhaanu ketu dvishat parishat pradhaanaaha
Tvad daasa daasa charamaavadhi daasa daasaaha
sriivenkataachalapate tava suprabhaatam

It is also a very good practice to medidate on Lord Hari for 2 minutes as soon as one wakes up (even sitting in the bed upon waking up and chanting Hariirharihi 7 seven times). after this, even before brushing the teeth once can chant the above shloka from suprabhatam.

These are very simple to do, does not take much time, and extremely effective for all kinds of astrological problems.
Sudarshang

This one is among the simplest and yet MOST powerful for anyone in deep distress! It is in Tamil.

oorilEn kaaniyillai oravu mattroruvar illai
paaril nin paadha moolam pattrilEn parama moorthi
kaaroli vannanE! KannanE! KadaruginrEn
Arular kalaikan? ammA! arangamaa nagarullaanE!"

Those who understand tamil might enjoy its meaning. One can recite this at any time, any place. No Restrictions. It is said, when you chant this verse, even the most malefic planet in your chart becomes a benefic!

nice to read abt the prayers for those who r sometimes pressed for time. At times I feel overwhelmed to do complicated and time consuming mantras when there is so much housework itself to do and then work to be attended to outside. I read a nice article on ammas.com when a reader commented that when she is busy she just takes the Ramayan Book and touches it to her eyes and bows to it,and then goes and attends to her work because it says that where there is the ramayan there surely is the presence of Rama Sita Lakshman and Hanuman. I was so touched by her faith and simplicity that i felt peaceful at once. I guess some people have it. they are so peaceful and have the faith that it reaches out to you, after all God understands our situation. Happy Navratri and Ram Navami to all.

Sudarshang

At times one is confronted with a "sudden, difficult situation" that needs an instant insight or solution! At those times, the simplest thing to do is say "Govinda".
Sudarshang

A very very powerful standard remedy for all astrological problems, and yet very very simple is "lighting a lamp in morning and evening" in the house. One may also light two lamps and keep them outside the house entrance on either side - every day in the evening. it wards off all ill-effect and literally "wards off darkness" and brings light to the home! Please keep a small "pooja area", light a lamp there using sesame oil, or ghee. In addition, when you visit temples one can make it a practice to take a little oil or ghee and ask the archakar to add the oil to the lamp in the temple.

No need to tell any stotras or do anything else. This remedy is very very powerful and simple. Just do this every day even if you cannot do anything else!

If it is not too inconvenient, you might keep a photo of Lord Krishna, keep a tumbler of water in front of him, light the lamp, and offer a flower or even a leaf from any plant! Krishna tells in BG, "patram pushpam phalam toyam ..."

A small story to accompany the simplicity of what the Lord expects from a Bhakta:

The next day was Krishna Janmashtami. An extremely poor couple with vivid imagination were discussing how they were going to make "sakkarapongal" (jaggery rice) the next day for Krishna - in all details - cashews, raisins etc. But due to their poverty they could not make the sakkarapongal the next day. Krishna appeared in their dreams and acknowledged how tasty their "imaginary" sakkarapongal was!

Anytime, anywhere one who is facing trouble only needs to think of Him or call him out with any name! Yes, all names in the world ultimately However, one should also be aware that He will only aid your need and not your greed!

saindhaviji,
its an excellent resource for beginners in astrology and for good for common public. i am also a beginner in astrology and i suggest that it would be better if someone compiles all the beneficial mantras in one post so that for common public it is easy to understand and they can immediately start to get benefits of this mantra. also i wanted to ask that if i do these mantras on behalf of someone the will it be useful to the person to whom i am dedicating these mantras on. kindly reply.
thanks

To the posters above,

First, I thank all of you for your comments.

Special thanks to Venkatji for your explanations and also to Sudarshang for all those stotras.

Diksha, yes, you can recite for another and it will have effect if you do with a clean mind and with the intention of granting results to the person concerned.

Ok, in last few months when I have been away, I have revised my opinion about the Gayatri Mantra and am now convinced by Venkatji that all may recite it regardless of the position of Sun in their charts.

I differ only in that I believe that all humans are God's creations and hence, all have equal right to recite all the Vedic mantras, regardless of their castes, nationality or ethnic origin. I understand that others may feel differently, but this is my personal opinion. I expect no one to necessarily follow it.

Further, while I have been away, I have found 2 very simple remedies for Rahu and Saturn and I would like to share these with all -

For Saturn - Light a til oil (sesame oil) diya facing Western direction daily.

For Rahu - Wear a necklace of sandalwood beads. Make sure that sandalwood is genuine.

I have tried both and have found them to work! 8)

Further, in the list of hymns given above, along with Dashavatara stotra, Purusha Sukta and Vishnu Sahasra Nama for Vishnu, please add Lakshni Nrisimha Karavalamba stotram for Vishnu by Adi Shankaracharya. You may recite any one of these according to your taste, time and inclination. Please see link for Lakshmi Nrisimha Karavalamba stotra -

http://youtu.be/77nyNTiUS7k

Similarly, instead of Hanuman Chalisa, you may recite Sankat Mochan Hanuman Ashtakam if you want an alternative. Please see link -

http://youtu.be/ohCrjGUU3R4

I have been away from this site and may not come for another few months, but I do appreciate your responses.

PMahesh,

I have said it earlier and will say it again -

One finds a good astrologer only when one is destined to get an accurate reading. Otherwise, one gets wrong readings or no readings at all, or doesn't even try to find an astrologer.

In the same manner, one gets a right remedy and practises it only when one is destined to benefit from it. Otherwise, when the time has not yet come to benefit from a remedy, one either doesn't get a right remedy, doesn't practise it even if told about it, or obstacles come in the way while practising it.

Please see my account of my Rahu Mahadasha in Exploring's post in the Dasha section, where I have explained how I couldn't get a proper astrologer during Rahu Mahadasha and no one told me the remedies because I was destined to experience the full effects of Rahu Mahadasha.

I wish someone had told me to wear a sandalwood necklace when I was going through Rahu Mahadasha.

By the time I got the remedies for Rahu, Jupiter Mahadasha started. Now, I easily find good astrologers, get the remedies for Rahu and find them effective.

I myself have suggested some powerful hymns to some people, who refused to recite them, because their time to benefit from them hasn't come yet.

Even finding and practising a correct remedy is a part of destiny.

Our duty is only to tell others what we have found effective. Whether they practise it successfully or not is not in our domain.
