Dear Astro gurus
I'm unable to digest the fact that planets are called malefic.
I mean for instance, we are told to pray to the sun and chant Gayatri Mantra everyday. If you look at all civilisations and religions and cultures, sun is the king of the cosmos. Now, why do we call the effulgent sun a functional malefic? I just don't get it....
Same way, I don't know Rahu ketu Shani mars all seem to do good from a spiritual standpoint. Even Rahu for that matter gives illusion only to lead you to Moksha (through his other half ketu)
Shani makes you follow moral path and makes you religious. Mars can give wisdom, courage and strength.
I'm not sure why these planets are called functional malefics? I mean I can understand that it all depends on which house they are placed and they are aspected by whom but by themselves why tag them as malefic?
It just feels bad while praying to the sun each day to even think that it's malefic.
I mean why only Venus (beauty planet and wealth giving), Jupiter (wisdom), moon (representing beauty and peace) have to be considered benefics?
Don't you think that whoever came up with such terms and divisions of planets was biased?
Sun mars fiery, saturn looks cold and dark, Rahu ketu are incomplete...so hence call them malefic? What's the logic?
Someone please explain!
Kind regards
Nora
Uncomfortable with the notion of malefic planets

I think they are called malefic for the right reasons, Most people who make assumptions about planets have not really felt their energy. for example you said some of these planets do good from a spiritual standpoint. let's take ketu for example, your working at your job you suddenly get fired, there's no means to provide for yourself, you have to depend on others for your lively hood, ketu doesn't like relationships so now your alone without any friends or partner, you might even get humiliated by others to break your ego a bit. so if you can walk through the fire yes they can be great from a spiritual standpoint, but it's easy said then done. I am not an astrologer, so may other learned members shed light on this.
Thanks seeker. I know what you mean. Ketu makes a person also abruptly quit from his/her job and shut the door on their relatives and friends. Just like Shani. I know what you mean. But what I'm saying is why call them functional malefic? Because isn't everything based on which house they are located and who it's aspected by?
I mean if we look at this logic...Jupiter is called functional benefic etc...but even Jupiter can give too much ego to a person as if he or she is the most wise. Moon too can make one very dreamy and chaotic in mind. Venus too can give so much pleasures that it spoilt a person.
So, why call only these 3 planets as natural benefics when even they seem to have some negative sides? Of course, it all depends on where they are placed too. And aspected by whom.
Spiritual or non-spiritual point of view, I don't know if it's correct to call a planet functional malefic? As it depends on its location in the chart?
Kind regards

Any planet can be functional malefic, depending on the lagna.
In my understanding, some planets are deemed natural malefics, because their placement in good bhavas like 1st, 5th, 7th, 9th destroy the signification of these bhavas. (unless there is some mitigating factor like, the planet is placed in it's own house, or if some other benefic aspects the planet etc)

My understanding is that a planet is considered a natural malefic solely based on the MEANS by which it delivers its results to the native.
Makes perfect sense why the malefics are considered to be so if you look at it from this point of view. All the benefics deliver their results in a 'soft' way.
For instance, Jupiter in the 6th house, if well placed, is considered to be good when it comes to reducing enmity, but the means by which Jupiter does this is through it's natural (and functional) significations such as wisdom, religion, etc. In this case, a person might have no enemies because they're so compassionate to their enemies that it makes it difficult to impossible for someone to consider the native an enemy.
On the flip side, Mars in the 6th is considered excellent for reducing enmity if well placed, but in this case the means that Mars uses is based on a person's 'harsher' qualities. A person who has Mars in the 6th in Aries for example might have little to no enemies because the person is so aggressive that people don't get on the native's bad side and even if they do, Mars just pummels right through them, hence in effect having the same end result as Jupiter in the previous example, but achieved through very different means.
