This is a doubt which I would like knowledgeable astrologers to clarify. We call the 6th, 8th and the 12th house as Dusthana houses and the general view is that placement of planets in these houses isn't very good. But shouldn't the same logic hold good when arriving at a conclusion on the malefic lords for each ascendant? As per BV Raman's book 'How to Judge a Horoscope' , it's supposed to be the 3rd lord, 6th lord and 11th lord that are supposed to be the most malefic lords. The 6 is commonly bad both as a dusthana house and a malefic lord but I see no reference to the 8th and 12th lord being really malefic. Also I would like to understand why do we consider the 11th as a malefic since it's specifically quoted that the 11th lord is the worst of the malefics. My general line of thinking was that anything to do with the 11th is supposed to be beneficial more so also going by the Puranic story of how Ravana wanted to place all the planets in the 11th house. I know I might be juggling up a little between houses and lords but I felt it would be good to understand the reasoning behind why planets in 6th, 8th and 12th aren't good and why 3rd, 6th and 11th lord are supposed to be the most malefic lords?

In BPHS in the chapter about yoga karakas it is explained that any planet owning 3, 6 and 11 houses will give evil effects. 3 and 11 are cruel houses because they promote one's ego, hence leading to illusions and suffering. That being said, it doesn't mean they are totally bad, - from a material standpoint they can be very beneficial, bringing courage, initiative (3) or gains of all kinds (11). Basically, any planet placed in the 11th house is entitled to confer some gains on a native, which is why it is considered auspicious. But the lord of the 11th house is evil, meaning it always acts as a functional malefic.
According to Parashara, 8th and 12th houses have more neutral nature and if a graha owns a trine house or is with an auspicious graha, it will give good results. However, placement in those houses is generally considered undesirable. There are some exceptions, of course, like specific yogas or being in an exaltation sign.
The point is, lordship, that determines functional nature of graha, and placement in houses are two different things, with different rules to be applied to them.

Could you please elaborate on this point? How are they different? For example, What is the difference between being the 6th Lord and being placed in 6th house?Thrawn wrote: 03 Jun 2018 The point is, lordship, that determines functional nature of graha, and placement in houses are two different things, with different rules to be applied to them.

6th lord will always act as a functional malefic, bringing obstacles, diseases and enemies into one's life. Graha, placed in 6th house may or may not be detrimental to the things it represents. Or it can be mixed. It depends on a variety of factors, such as specific yogas it is involved in, strength, functional nature, etc. For example, Saturn for Taurus lagna placed in Libra in 6th is not bad at all or 2nd lord placed in 6th with a benefic can bring wealth through enemies. Generally, placement in 6th house is not good, but there are exceptions such as these.

Thrawn,
Thanks for this explanation.
You are saying that 6th Lord is always bad but placement in 6th house is not always bad. Ok.
Does it matter where the 6th Lord is placed? If 6th Lord is in a good house for example 5th house or 9th house, will the situation get better or worse?
