Hi,

Does anyone know what the generic name is for those Hindu Mediums who pray and perform a special ceremony and then a god (or demigod) enters into their bodies and answers specific questions you may have? Its a bit like visiting a spirit medium (in Western culture) but the practice is common in India and religiously based - so the medium has "god" enter his body not "talking to spirits".

Anyone know what is the generic English name for these mediums? I think they are called "Aruls" but cant find that on google...trying to do a bit of research..anyone know what I am talking abt?

Regards

hi kappy

the term is enthusiast.

In north India it is called chownki and khel. Though in khel the possessed person does not answer any question.

Normally this process comes under tantrik worship.

Every Indian language has its own name for this person, so there is no common name.

The most common name in Hindi is "Bhagataa." In Eastern India, it is called Ojha, from which the surname Ojha has emerged.

Hello,

Thanks for your replies.

Yes I believe it does fall under Tantrik Worship as the priest usually goes into a trance.

Many Thanks!
