It is said that the house in which Ketu is placed in one's birth chart shows that the native will be indifferent or show lack of concern towards the things signified by that house.

For example, if Ketu is placed in 8th house, the person will be indifferent towards the in-laws and everything else signified by 8th house. If it is in 4th house, the native will show lack of concern for theit mother, homeland, property. If in 7th house then they will show lack of concern towards the spouse or partnership.

My question is, would this apathy be life long or up to a certain age of the native?
Warm Regards

Hi Rita,

I have not seen that to be the case!

Thanks,

I have seen someone with Ketu and Venus in their lagna. They seem to be directionless in matters of love.

Hi Rohiniranjan,

I have a number of examples in my own family. A family member with Ketu in his 4th house does not show much care or concern for his widowed elderly mother. Another one with Ketu in her 8th house shows indifference towards the in-laws, behaves as if they don't exist And another person had Ketu in 7th house, they didn't have much interest in spending time with the spouse or understanding the needs of the spouse. I can give many more examples. I have also seen people with Ketu in 2nd house with a lot of wealth, however they are not interested in managing their wealth. It seems that a person NEGLECTS the matters of the house in which Ketu is placed.
Warm Regards

Hi Rita,

I was not rejecting your observations or hypothesis. Generally speaking, and specifically for lunar nodes, they seem to be very susceptible to other planetary influences which from time to time underscores or highlights their propensity for creating 'detachment' which can appear as 'apathy'. I would encourage you to look into those examples from that consideration. I will be more than happy to help if you are willing. Publicly or privately if confidentiality is an issue and you may very well not like to discuss the chart/charts in public. I am always open for learning more, astrology being such a vast field.

Hi Rita

To a certain extent it is true - I have ketu in my 2nd and just finished running ketu MD and yes that last 4 years of it involved general dis-ilusionment/dis-enchantment and disappointments related to 2nd house significations

Lilly, Rohiniranjan and Astro123,

Thanks very much for your feedback. I will try to find some more examples so that we can discuss further.

Rohiniranjan - I agree that if Ketu is accompanied by another planet in the same house then the effect will be different.
Warm Regards

Hi Rita,

In my personal experience ketu did not make me detached or show lack of concern/ indifferent towards anyone or anything in particular. In fact I went through entire Ketu Maha Dasa being very grounded & responsible. Being a school age kid at that time, my main focus was to be a good student and excel in my classes so I could get admission into a good college. My day to day life was spent going to school, library, doing homework, helping out with household chores as my mother was a working women. Although I did not really like doing house work; I took it as my duty. On the weekends or holidays, I had a bit of time to relax & socialize with friends. Though I had some minor disputes or disagreement with some people, but for the most part I had attachment and love for my family and close friends and did not feel the need to get away from them.

In my opinion, the effect of Ketu is to show indifference/negligence or careless approach, unknowingly or unintentionally.

With Regards.

Dear Rita,

You are very kind. Thanks in advance for offering to share some examples. We all learn so much more from examining charts, though books and articles etc are of great introductory importance and indeed essential too.

Indeed, it seems that not only rahu-ketu (love them or hate) but other planets too, including the inherently rigid ones too flower in the lives of individuals, quite individually depending on DKP, their different states in horoscopes and if the clock-work (dasas etc) match up! Many 'promising' packages in our charts, often remain desires, if not dreams -- as often observed. Similarly, some nightmares are simply scary, until we wake up! :-)

Hence, I personally cringe a bit when often we as many others tend to filter out other influences on a single factor or combination etc. Much better to have the entire pizza in front of us, as I mentioned a few days ago, whether we choose to eat it all or not.

Hi Lilly,

Which house is Ketu placed in your chart? And at what age did your Ketu mahadasha start?

This is what I too have observed, especially when Ketu is alone in a house. And the person is not even aware that they are neglecting the matters of that house OR certain circumstances happen that lead them to disconnect from the matters of that house.

Hi Rita,

Even I am puzzled as to why ketu has not given me detachment and apathy?

Hi Lilly,

Could be because you went through Ketu mahadasha during childhood or teenage years, when we are still unaware of many realities of life that people normally face in adulthood.

Rita ji,

Based on my experience, I have seen that some aspect (not all) of the house where Ketu is placed comes up as insignificant for the native. Even this is noticeable in charts where Ketu is alone and not conjunct with any other planet. In my chart for e.g, Ketu is in 10th and I have come to realize that power and position is sidelined, i.e., it is not at the top of my mind. Mind you, work itself is a very serious matter for me. I do not neglect work (profession) or any other karma (duties on personal side).

But again as Rohin Ranjan ji indicated it is quite difficult to affirm that this effect is due to Ketu alone. For e.g, in my chart Su (Kaaraka for power and position) is afflicted by placement in Aq and 3rd aspect of Sa.

CRS ji and Rita ji,

My contention is not that ketu (or rahu) do not have their 'separative influences' as we keep reading about for decades and observed too from time to time, but they require a catalyst (or detonator!) and when all the ducks are lined up, sometimes, fireworks can and do blaze forth! :-)

But, is that not true for many if not most astrological combinations etc? Laghu parashari reminds us if one cares to study that small pithy booklet!

CRS and Rohiniranjan,

You have made some very valuable points. Planet conjunction and aspect on Rahu/Ketu invariably change their effects.

And it also often happens that we see many charts with a certain effect given by a particular planet in a particular house which makes us come to a specific conclusion, and then suddenly a chart comes along that totally blows that conclusion !!! We are then forced to delve further to find out what else is playing a part in changing the effects of that planet.
Warm Regards

I agree that where Ketu is the native is often neglectful. Ketu in the first is a bit of a mystery to me however as I've only known one person with this placement. Does it make the native neglectful of his appearance? Of himself? If so how?

The person I knew with Ketu in the first was always dressed well and hair well kept, however his ketu was conjunct venus.

Speaking as a very beginner in the subject of astrology - I'd read that Ketu in 1st bhava makes a person selfless. I know 3 persons with this placement of Ketu and it seems to work. All three persons accomplished in their fields and particular about their personal appearance !

What kind of selflessness do you think? Selflessness in the sense of being charitable, selflessness in the sense of being detached from a singular identity (being chamelion-like in nature), or selflessness in the sense of being self-sacrificing/martyrdom?

My husband has Ketu in 7th house and he's unable to relate to me as a spouse - he doesn't feel a need to care for me or support me in any manner. Even during the times when I was bedridden after losing my pregnancy - he could never bring himself up to say a few supportive words (I had to drive to the hospital all by myself) -till this date, when I'm going through tough times, all he'll do is look at me and walk away. He has always been there to help his family and neighbors - he's otherwise a very rational and reasonable person - doesn't have conflicts with anyone. He just can't seem to emote well, with me. I've come to accept him as he is - though there are times I very much want an out from this relationship.
Me, on the other hand, have my ketu in 5th house (along with Venus) which I feel has given me an obsessive love for my kids - my life revolves around my kids, their education, their health, their overall well-being and I've had a break in my education and never had any love affairs (Ketu's detatchment on 5th house?)

Hi astrolearner..has the situation with your husband always been this way? Why did he chose to get married if he didnt want to be in the relationship?
