Hanuman mantra
Manojavam maruta tulya vegam, jitendriyam buddhi mataam varishtham
vaataatmajam vaanara yooth mukhyam, shree raama dootam sharnam prapadye.

Let me pray to the one who is swift as thought (manojavam-), the one who is more powerful than the wind (marut.tulya.vegam-), the one who has conquered his senses (jitendriyam-), the one who is supreme among all intelligent beings, the son of the wind-god (vaataatmajam-), the commander of the army of forest creatures (vaanar.yooth.mukhyam-), Let me find refuge in Lord Rama's Messenger, the incomparable Lord Hanuman. Please accept me and my prayers at your feet
Dev ji,

What you have given as Hanuman Mantra is a part of the Ram Raksha Stotra, two verses actually. Can someone just take his choice of verses from a stotra and recite it as Ishta Mantra?

Mata Ramo Matpita. Ramachandrah
Swami Ramo matsakha Ramachandrah
Sarvasvam may Ram Chandra Dayaluh
Nanyam jaane naiva jaane na jaane II 30 II

An elder friend of mine has taken the above part of the RRS and recites this as his Ishta Mantra. Is this allowed or do you have to recite the whole stotra mandatorily? I always thought that my friend is acting funny. Now I ask this because I don't know of such things.

Thank you very much sir ji, for putting up these potent mantras. The maha mantra 'shri ram jai ram jai jai ram' is known to us all. But the other mantras are new and unknown.

One question sir, you have prescribed a very large number of japas, in lakhs actually. Are these japas to be done in the Purashcharan method, increasing in number till purnima and then decreasing in number till amavasya?

regards
swamykool
Dear Swami Koolji,

That is true, that is why the number of days is fixed, how the japas to be increased as number of days goes and for all that i will come back later if time permits.

Pranaams to all

I am putting below the Sankata Naashana Ganesha Stotram, It is 12 names of Sr Ganesh that remove all afflictions. It very short and it is very easy to chant as well 8) . I have another book that has three verses in phala shruti, but i am unable to find that so i am giving only one.I have taken the meanings of the names from the book Stotra Mala where it was translated by Swami Chidananda. I hope it will be useful to all. :D :D :D

Pranamya shirasaa devam gauri putram vinayakam
bhaktaavaasam smarennityam aayuh-kaamarthasiddhaye

Prathamam vakratundam cha ekadantam dwitiyakam
tritiyam krshnapingaaksham gajavaktram chaturthakam

lambodaram panchamam cha shashtam vikatameva cha
saptamam vighnaraajam dhumravarnam tathaashtamam

Navamam bhaalachandram cha dashamam tu vinaayakam
ekaadasham ganapatim dvaadasham tu gajaananam

The meaning of the underlined names are as below
1.having a curved trunk
2.with one tusk
3.having blackish-brown coloured eyes
4.elephant-faced one
5.having a big belly
6.frightful
7.master of obstacles
8.smoky complexion
9.having the sign of the moon on his forehead
10.having no other leader
11.lord of groups of attendants
12. having the face of an elephant

Whoever chants these 12 names (of Sri Ganesh) three times daily (morning, noon, evening) will have no fear of any obstacle and will be fulfilled in all ways.

Dear Swamy Kool:

Yes, I feel so. Even sometimes people chant only Sreerama Rama Ramethi or Vishnu Sahasranamam alone. It depends on the time. Also faith is most important. when time permits one can chant whole soka and other times he can chant a few like these.

Namaskaara to All

Here are few verses on masters, the Ones of Steady Wisdom from a few different places.
Whenever i look at the mystery of life, in philosophy or ideas the thought comes into my mind very strongly that i don't know the answer and i feel the only answers lie with the Jnaani. These Souls who have actually seen what the ones living in this prapancha can only debate upon is somehow unable to explain. However having seen it, what can they explain? Maybe words don't go there i dont't know.

In Bhagavad Gita the famous section comes in Chapter 2 of the qualities of the Man of Steady wisdom. That section starts with Arjuna asking so beautifully.

stitha prajnasya kaa bhaasha samaadhistasya keshava
stithadhih kim prabhaasheta kim aasita vrajeta kim

Oh Keshava, What is the desciption of the One with steady wisdom , whose mind is fixed in contemplation. How does the One of steady wisdom speak? How does he sit? How does he walk?

and here is the first answer in a string of verses known as the Stitha Prajna Lakshana.

Sri Bhagavan Uvacha

prajahaati yadaa kamaansarvaan partha manogataan
aatmanyevaatmanaa tushtah stithaprajnah tadochyate

When one completely castes off Oh Partha, all of the desires of the mind and is happy in the Self by the Self then he is said to be One of steady wisdom

Here is a verse by the Shishya of Adi Shankara, Totakaachaarya. The story goes that he was not one of the brighter students in the classes of Vedanta. However, he used to do so much seva for Bhagavadpaada. In the class one day he was asked to explain something to the rest of the students. Possibly it was masala added on the story but how it is told is that the other students laughed a bit as this student was considered to be less than intelligent. So standing there in front of all the students and Aachaarya he began to sing verses sponteneously that happened to be in the totaka meter.
Here is the last verse, my favourite of that composition called as Totakashtkam

Vidita na mayaa visadaika kalaa
na cha kinchana kaanchanam asti guro
drutameva videhi krpaam sahajaam
bhava shankara deshika me sharanam

The best of all perceptors! There is no art known by me fully.
Oh teacher! i have got nothing also, not even a single piece of gold.
I surrender unto you. Please show your compassion upon me soon by the grace which is your very nature. May you be become the sole refuge for me, Oh Shankara.

Here is verse similar to many stotras with names. This is 12 names of the Stitha Prajna..

prathamam sthithaprajnam cha shuddhasattvam dwitiyakam
tritiyam svaatmaaramanam dhirgakurcham chathurthakam
sakshiswarupam panchamam cha shashtam hi shashtam eva cha
saptamam kaarunyamayam navaamshesham tathaashtamam
navamam purnatattvajnam dashamam shantidaayakam
ekaadasham lokapatim dwaadasham chahiramananam

Pranaams
i was just listening to this and thought i'd post it
its in my mind extremly devotional
and echoes my sentiments

I have climbed highest mountains
I have run through the fields
Only to be with you
Only to be with you
I have run
I have crawled
I have scaled these city walls
These city walls
Only to be with you

But I still haven't found what I'm looking for

I have spoke with the tongue of angels
I have held the hand of a devil
It was warm in the night
I was cold as a stone

But I still haven't found what I'm looking for

I believe in the Kingdom Come
Then all the colors will bleed into one
Bleed into one
But yes I'm still running

You broke the bonds
And you loosed the chains
Carried the cross
Of my shame
Oh my shame
You know I believe it

But I still haven't found what I'm looking for

Hi members,

Navārna mantra has been explained in Devī-Atharva-Śirṣa-Upaniṣad (Devi Upaniṣad).[36]

The Navārna Mantra is also known as Chandi or Navakshari (the one with nine-syllables).

The mantra is:

oṁ aiṁ hrīṁ klīṁ cāmuṇḍayāi viche
ॐ ऐं ह्रीं क्लीं चामुण्डायै विच्चे

The Navārna mantra is recited before and after the recitation of Devī Māhātmya.

The Navārna mantra is recited before and after the recitation of Devī Māhātmya.

I have seen some recite this mantra as such without recitation of Devi Mahatmya since the latter is long one. I dont know if it is right. Ramanan may please clarify.

From this post onwards I give YouTube video links for various hymns.

You should download these videos in your hard disk and play from there, as playing online stops the video sometimes because of slow Internet speed.

One must always recite the hymns with proper pronunciation and one must always ascertain the meaning of the hymn before reciting it. If possible, one should also find out the history, context and significance of a hymn before reciting it. Recitation has to be conscious and not mechanical in order to have effect.

Gayatri Mantra -

Gayatri is one of the primary mantras from the Rig Veda.

Lord Krishna said in the Bhagavat Gita - "Amongst the Mantras I am Gayatri."

For Vishnu -

Purusha Sukta from Rig Veda, with text in Roman and English translation -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-NHJffUIIo

Purusha Sukta conceptualises "Purusha" as the Brahman encompassing the universe. It is recited in most Vedic yajnas and was later incorporated in all the 4 Vedas, most major Upanishads and Samhitas. Along with Gayatri Mantra, Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, Shatarudriya and Devi Suktam, it is one of the most important hymns from the Vedic canon.

"Purusha" is Brahman the formless divine power. Gradually it got identified with Surya first who traversed the skies and with Vishnu later, who had a Cosmic form.

Later, Purusha Sukta gave rise to the Cosmic form of Vishnu and from there came the famous and popular Vishnusahasranama in the Mahabharata, also found in some of the Puranas. After the Mahabharata war, Yudhishthira asked about Lord Vishnu from Bhishma. Bhishma gave him the Vishnusahasranama, based on the Cosmic form of Vishnu as given in the Purusha Sukta given above.

For Shiva -

Shatarudriya (also known as Rudram) from Taittiriya Samhita of the Krishna Yajur Veda, with text in Devanagari with English translation -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwPuuKPKI6w

Along with Purusha Sukta, Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, Gayatri Mantra and Devi Suktam, this is regarded as one of the most important Vedic hymns. It conceptualises Rudra-Shiva as the Cosmic divine power.

Shatarudriya contains the famous Shiva Panchakshari Mantra and the Rig Vedic Mahamrityunjaya Mantra.

And here is the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra itself, from the Rig Veda -

Note - Please note that in many renditions in audio and literary versions, the word "bandhanaan" is used. This is wrong. The original word is "bandhanaat," as has been used in the video as well as Roman text above.

Please don't make this error while chanting this hymn.
