Khoo:

very interesting post indeed. You said

Any planets that affect both the Sun and the Moon in the chart, assume special importance

If saturn in leo lagna aspects sun and moon placed in the 3rd, and if jupiter aspects saturn, what sort of effect would that be, can jupiter's aspect always be considered good, here for leo lagna he is benefic but for tula rasi, he is not. So what effect would that be?

Thanks,

Dev

Dev :

The thing is that the planet which aspects both the Sun and Moon means the person connects to that planet (whatever aspects, placements etc. it receives) at both the soul, emotional and personality level. So you can see that the person in his external makeup and internal motivation exhbiting the characteristic of that particular planet.

The expression of that particular planet becomes that much easy for him and hence his fate would tie in with that planet (what you sow is what you reap).

So the interpretation of such a planet is different from say, if the said planet is in its own sign, in kendra to the Ascendant which gives a pure version of the character of that planet. Such a person is great but unless it connects both to the Sun and the Moon as well, you may find that the energy and character exhibited is not so much part of his integrated make-up of character. His fate is thus less tied to this planet UNLESS there are several planets in mutual kendras to this particular said planet. Note, however, conjunctions of the Sun, Moon and a natural malefic to such a planet would then defunct the Great Persons Yoga.

Hi Khoo,
Your posts are always very informative. Will you shed some light on what will happen if Vargottama planet itself is in Dusthana house (6,8,12). For example for cancer asc. Mars in 8th house in D1&in 12th house in D12.How to judge Effects that will be obtained in Mars Mahadasha in this case.

Hi Yogiraj

8th and 12th houses are spiritual houses. Mars show independence in spirit. In this case Mars is in Aquarius right? Beause it is a Cancer Ascendant we are talking about and Mars is 8th in D-1. Also Mars is 12th in
D-12.

Now 12th is the 5th to the 8th. For the above scenario, it could mean the person is strong-willed and makes his own decision where spiritual matters are concerned. He may break off from his traditional religion of his lineage and enter into a new kind of religion or spiritualism altogether. Or in a less dramatic way, he may gradually have views on spiritual matters different from his parents or lineage even though he may still carry on with the family traditional spiritual practice. Aquarius deals wtih social groups/social media and he could have been influenced by the social groups he goes about with or the social media he is exposed to.

Hi

Next principle .....

Planets placed in the 11th Bhava and high in Shadbala is conducive to extraordinary gains or luxurious living. This is regardless whether the planet is ruling a Dusthana or not.

What needs qualification is the 2nd statement. Why is the 2nd statement true?

Well the 11th although is the 6th to the 6th and 12th to the 12th meaning that the 11th Bhava has some Dusthana effects by the Bhavat Bhavam principle, these are SECONDARY factors and is quite negligible PROVIDED the planet ruling these houses has a high Shabala placed in the 11th.

11th being the 12th to the 12th means no expneses. 11th being 6th to the 6th means expansion after hard work which is your fruits of labour. 11th being 4th to the 8th means even the 8th, the house of huge losses, also contribute some gains to the 11th when the ruler of the 8th goes into the 11th. And with a high Shadbala which deals with a planet's functional lordship, based on the preceding statement, instead of garnering greater misfortunes, it garners even more fortune.

For non-Dusthana lordship, the logic is obvious and I would not expound further.

Hi

As a matter of fact if we consider the 3rd Bhava as a mild Dusthana, even if the lord of the 3rd is placed in the 11th it also flourishes. Why?

Because the 11th Bhava is the 9th to the 3rd so it brings out the BEST in the 3rd lord when the latter is placed within the 11th Bhava. It is just like the Ascendant Lord going into the 9th Bhava from the Ascendant.

Hi

In the above post, to say it is good for the 3rd Lord is to say that it brings out the best in the 3rd Lord. This means the lord instead of giving Dusthana effects, gives good effects when placed in the 11th Bhava.

So it looks like only Shadbala is the major factor in determining how much good a planet in the 11th Bhava can produce.

Hi

In fact Dusthana Lords placed in the trine houses of 1st, 5th and 9th also has the same effect as being placed in the 11th Bhava in the sense that Dusthana effects get reduced. The only exception is for the Lord of the 3rd Bhava placed in Trines, the Dusthana effects would NOT get reduced.

if you do not believe me, take the 9th Bhava. 9th is 2nd to the 8th so can kill the ill effects of the 8th Bhava. 9th is the 10th to the 12th Bhava so the latter subsist to serve the former ie. the 12th Bhava becomes more outward looking in terms of one's philosophy of life. 9th is also the 4th of the 6th Bhava so the 6th Bhava of accomplishments is contributed to the 9th Bhava of good fortune - you are a good worker and word gets around.

Same with the 5th Bhava which was discussed very much earlier when I joined the forum. To recap 5th is the 6th t the 12th so it leads to expansion of enlightenment where one takes stpes to find a Guru for oneself for example. 5th is the 12th to the 6th Bhava so with intelligence, you can avoid diseases and enemies. 8th is the 4th to the 5th Bhava so we use our intelligence to harness the requisite effort and inner energy ourselves to accomplish great works of authorship.

Same with the 1st Bhava.

Also note the relationship of the above 3 trine houses in relation to the 3rd Bhava. 3rd Bhava dusthana effects do NOT get reduced if its lord goes into the trine. Work out yourself the logic why.

So what is the difference between the 11th Bhava and the trine houses in terms of reducing Dushtana effects? Well the difference is that the 11th is the strongest Uppachay house so it grows with time. Not only does the Dusthana effects get reduced, the planet becomes stronger and can fight the way through the end to obtain its goals. Hence a high Shadbala for a planet in the 11th Bhava can boost its energy and victory tremendously. That is the DIFFERENCE!

The 11th Bhava does not get spoilt in having Dusthana Lords placed in it. A high Shadbala would in addition make the overall effect of the Bhava grow together with the said planet with the high Shadbala.

Hi

Note that the sign the planet is in in the 11th Bhava and the other planets it associates with, if any, in the 11th Bhava, would make it easier or harder for it to grow stronger. These factors have to be taken into account as in any other Bhava.

Hi

There is one point I want to highlight. Now the 1st Bhava is the 8th to the 6th Bhava. To destroy enemies and sicknesses, the lord of the 6th if placed in the 1st must be a natural benefic. Natural malefics cause more diseases and enemies instead. But of course it can contribute to authority and fighting spirit and may even gain victory over enemies if well placed by sign as expounded by B V Raman. But natural benefics would be better to dissolve the Dusthana effects.

This is in accordance with an earlier principle I expounded that the 8th to any Dusthana, in order to destroy the Dusthana effects must be a natural benefic instead of a natural malefic.

Yes, Murad. Even for a planet conjuncting Ketu. That is the characteristic of the 11th house.

Hi

Next principle .....

Everytime you see the definition of a Yoga involving the ruler of a Bhava, replace it with the dispositor of that ruler in the definition and the Yoga still exists although in a weaker form.

Preferably use the dispositor in terms of Nakshatra placement rather than in terms of sign placement. The former is stronger than the latter.

Hi

Next principle .....

Nhabsa Yogas (those that define the overall structure of a chart eg. all planets exist in 6 signs etc.) one must ensure the strictest definition (see BPHS for a list of Nhabsa Yogas). No loose definitions allowed.

However, other Yoga definitions will sometimes override the definition of a Nhabsa Yoga and the results of the definition of the former Yoga would apply rather than the defintion of the Nhabsa Yoga.

Hi

Note that the way the 7th Bhava handle Dusthana Lords placed in it, is about the same as the 1st Bhava in terms of dissolving the bad effects of the Dusthana. The two differences are :

(1) For the 7th Bhava, it is the 8th Bhava to the 12th Bhava rather than in the case of the 1st Bhava where it is the 8th to the 6th Bhava. Statements that apply to the latter pair can be transposed to the former pair with appropriate modifcations in terms of interpretation.

(2) The 7th Bava is the 5th to the 3rd Bhava unlike the 1st Bhava which is the 11th to the 3rd Bhava. 3rd Lord when placed in the 7th Bhava tend to exhibit more good effects of the 3rd Bhava rather than the bad effects.

(3) the 7th Bhava is neither a trinal house nor an Uppachaya house. So the way it deals with Dusthana lords placed within it is somewhat weaker than the other four Bhavas ie. 1st, 5th, 9th and 11th. 11th is the strongest in terms of dealing with Dusthana lords placed within it as we have already seen.

Dear Khoo,

What abt in following cases?

1) My 11th house is empty and its lord (moon) placed in 3rd house, moon is getting high shadbala strength. It is said upachaya houses lord placed in any upachaya house gives good result whether it is malefic or debilitate.

2) My wife's 3rd lord moon(exalted) is placed in ascendent. You know that asc is the 11th to 3rd. and 11th lord placed in 6th house which is also an upachaya house. So is it good in her case? Here again Moon getting highest shadbala strength like me.

3) one of my frnd who has libra ascendent, Jupiter is most malefic for this lagna. He has Ju, sat and rahu placed in 11th house, No doubt he is a good business acumen. Do u think jup will prove bad for him? Jupiter 6th lord in 11th which is again 6th to 6th. sat 4th lord in 11th which is 8th to 4th (i think sat placement is not good) Here jupiter gets good strength by shadbala in his case. I want to aware about his 11th lord which is debilitate and in Lagna.

Hi Murad

I overlooked. An affliction by a node is an affliction to the Graha whether found in 11th Bhava or otherwise unless the planet is in its own or exaltation sign. It is just like what I said - a planet placed badly by sign in the 11th Bhava is not much use whether ruling Dusthana or not. Worse if the planet is afflicted by the node or if it is combusted. Also if the planet is with enemy planets etc. This is regardless even whether the planet has a high Shadbala or not.

The main idea in this thread assume that the Graha is free from affliction when placed in the 11th Bhava.

Hi khoo

What happens if the planet is not vargottam but in its own house? For eg for Aquarius ascendant, moon is in 12th in D1 in Makara ; but in Navamsa(d-9) its in 7th house in karka.
Are its negative effects reduced
1. Firstly becuase lord of dusthana is going in another dusthana
2. Secondly becuase of above principle

Ok let's say that my Moon is in the Purnima Phase in the 11th house while Ketu is afflicting it badly in the 11th. Would it still be just as bad, or would it be better?

Hi Murad

Yes, it will be better. Full Moon though does not denote beneficience (waxing phase of the Moon does) but it makes the person more able to take set-backs and open to new ideas. Hence it is also a push factor in helping the person to get what they want. They are also more positive in their affections and lovable.

All these can contribute to Ketu's inward looking character.

Of course Moon+Ketu being placed in the 11th Bhava which is an expansive houses (10th and 11th houses all the planets behave like the Sun which is an expansive planet) does take off some of the affliction but not as much as my first response to you because a Graha conjuncting a node is a kind of eclipse although not like the total elcipse of the Sun and the Moon.

This then leads to the next conclusion that if your Moon happens to rule a Dusthana, being placed in the 11th and it being Purnima does help to a certain extent but not much.

In my case Saturn+Moon+Ketu in Capricorn, my affliction is overcomed by :

(1) Moon is bright thought not as bright as yours

(2) Saturn in its own sign meaning Ketu affliction on planets placed in Capricorn but not in their signs is less.

(3) The planet is Saturn in its sign and not other planets in their signs. The 1st to Saturn has a special signification from strength and perseverance.

(4) Ketu in Capricorn although makes the person grasping but Ketu rules 12th to it (Sagittarius) and 11th to it (Scorpio). These points give spirituality, progress in the world and sudden spiritual and material benefits.

(5) Ketu rules 5th and 6th Bhavas and 5th is the 9th to the 9th and 6th is the 10th to the 9th and thus Ketu alone is a kind of Raja Yoga - this concept from Philadeepika as expounded by Shilpa.

So on a case by case basis you can find redeeming factors and other factors which make the affliction worse eg. if Sun were to join and cause combustion as well, one has to study each affliction of the chart carefully.

In your case, look to where your 12th to Ketu and 11th to Ketu is placed in your chart and whether Ketu rules them. Moon's good placement by sign like Taurus or Cancer would also help. But it is better to have Ketu to have more beneficial effects rather than the afflicted (in this case the Moon) to be a good counter-aggressor because in terms of strengths, nodes are generally more powerful than Grahas unless the Graha is placed in its own sign - that is why nodes are called shadowy. Is the Moon placed in Cancer or Taurus?

Also find out if Ketu rules a trine. Although Nodes take up the characteristic of the sign where it is placed but that is during only its dasha. At other times it behaves like a node in which case ruling a trinal house can confer beneficial effects. See also whether any trinal lords are in Ketu's Nakshatras.

Hi Murad

I just came across a Yoga from Sage Garga which says that for a day birth Sun in 11th Bhava and for a night birth Moon in 11th birth will cure a million doshas in the chart if the lights are in debility.

Are you a night birth ie. the Sun in 1st to 6th? If yes, the Moon conjunct Ketu in the 11th Bhava in my opinion can be somewhat ameliorated.

Hi

Next Principle ......

The only time when the Dusthana Lord is in its fall is good or in inmical Rasi is good or in combustion is good is when Lagna Lord is in its own or exaltation Rasi (NOTE this from BPHS). In this case a Raja Yoga is formed.

Hi

Next principle .....

Two points to note about Jupiter's combustion.

(1) During its commencement bad effects are felt. Only in the later part of the dasha or in subsequent antardashas in a person's life, would good effects start to be felt. This is from BPHS.

(2) Jupiter aspects efficacy which does not contradict (1). Sooner or later it will the required intended results even though for a combusted Jupiter it will be later. This is from Kapila Nadi.
