Using the Navamsa - Some Technqiues

Post by Khoo Hock Leong » 16 Jan 2011

Hi Learned Members

Here are some of the ways one can use the Navamsa.

(1) Find the sign in Rasi where the planet is placed. Find out also the sign in Navamsa where the planet is placed. Then count from the Rasi sign to that of the sign in Navamsa. The position is the house in which the planet is placed with the Lagna denoted by the sign in which the planet is placed in Rasi. To assess the good or bad effects ot that note the following :

If the relative number of the counting is other than 6 or 8 or if the sign in Navamsa is not debilitated, then it has good effects. The good effects would be further enhanced based on the Ascendant Type that is formed for that particular planet's new position. The new Ascendant has Lagna identical to the planet's original Rasi position in D-1.

(2) Take the lord of the Navamsa chart. See whether it is placed in Kendra or Kona. If it is, then it is good. The person will be lucky and fortunate.

(3) For planets that are not in their own, Moolatrikona or exaltation signs, the dispositor in Navamsa assumes special signficance in chart interpretation. For example, if the 10th lord Mars in Rasi is placed in Sagittarius in Navamsa. Then predict occupations related to Jupiter would have a major inlfuence on Martian occupations like mabye the person is teaching in the police acadmy rather than an actual crime fighter himself.

(4) Conjucntions and oppositions (whether by Drishti or Yuti) in Navamsa assume a higher signification than other relationships like 10th house Drishti aspect.

(5) Some Observations

Mars conjunct Rahu or Ketu in Mercury's Navamsa gives skin or stomach problems.

Venus conjunct Rahu or Ketu in Navamsa indicates marriage to a person outside of the native's community. Also gives problems in relationships.

Saturn conjunct Moon in Navamsa indicates stinginess, or an obsession with money.

Moon and Mars conjunct in Navamsa indicate gynaecological problems in women and blood-related problems in men. This is especially true when the conjunction occurs in Cancer or Scorpio.

Venus, though Vargottama in Jyeshtha, can still give relationship problems.

Jupiter in exaltation or own sign in Navamsa usually gives a sound financial position to the native, especially as age increases.

Saturn in Leo Navamsa is almost always bad, except when Vargottama.

Natives with Sun in Aries Navamsa go bald sooner than most people. They also tend to have large foreheads.

Mars in Venus Navamsa gives a taste for the good life. If afflicted, will give vices. Venus in Mars Navamsa gives an aggressive, emotional outlook in relationships. A Mars-Venus exchange in Navamsa could indicate failure of marriage, or, a love-interest not leading to marriage. It could also indicate unfaithfulness or a multiplicity of relationships.

(6) Afflictions to a planet by the nodes give warped results, athough it does not necessarily deny the fulfillment.

(7) Special aspects and digbalas also apply to Navamsa.

(8) The lord of a house, whether in Rasi or Navamsa, conjunct or aspected by a Karaka in the Navamsa gives good results. For e.g., If the 7th lord of the Rasi or Navamsa is conjunct Venus, it gives good results pertaining to spouse. I consider Jupiter as karaka for Navamsa as well. It is the planet of Dharma.

(9) A planet involved in exchange of signs (Parivartana) in the Navamsa should be considered strong.

(10) A planet in its exaltation or own sign in Navamsa is to be considered strong, and usually gives good results pertaining to its lordship or Karaka signification. A planet in its debilitation in Navamsa is weak, unless that is offset by Neechbhanga.

(11) Vargottama in Navamsa is strong even if the planet is weak in Avastha. Dasa of such a planet is eventful.

(12) Any planet or Bhava should have equal or more strenght in D-9 chart to advocate sustaining power of that particular Bhava or planet. Any planet in its own Rashi placed in D-1 chart should go into its own Rashi, Mooltrikon sign, exaltation sign or great friend's sign. They should not go into inimical signs, untoward behaves or connected with them should not be debilitated or should not otherwise loose strenght in D-9 chart. One has to analysis the exact strength of a planet in D-9 chart in respect of basic chart, transit chart (prashna chart) any planet gaining strength in Navamsa multiply its power with three times.

(13) The lords of Navamsa are as follows:
a. The lord of first, 4th and 7th Navamsa is Deva which means the divine lord. It represent the qualities of generosity, power, wealth. Native born in this part of Navamsa are generous, religious and powerful.
b. The lord of 2nd, 5th and 8th Navamsa represent Nara which means a man or person of kind, soul and reputed. Engaged in the pursuits of human welfare.
c. The lords of 3rd, 6th and 9th Navamsa represent the charatertistics of Rakshaha or a demon. This part represent cruel, quarry, violent, selfish and person of a negative qualities.

(14) In Navamsa two things are must to be seen. The Lagna Bhava and Lagna Lord should not be into 6th, 8th or 12th Bhava in D-9. If it is moveable sign it should not be in 6th Navamsa or 8th Navamsa, if it is fixed Sign it should not to be in 4th Navamsa and in Dual sign it should not be in 2nd, 4th, & 8th Navamsa. Secondly, 6th, 8th & 12th lord of D-1 should not get associated with Lagna Bhava or lagna lord in D-9. When the Lagna and Lagna Lord of D-9 gets associated with 6, 8 or 12 of D-9, the first level of afflictions will give the affects in the Mahadasha of Planets connecting to these Lagna Lord and Lagna. The second level of afflictions is in the Antradasha of these planets and the third level in the Pratyanter Dashas. One with experience these kinds of troubles and anxietities in life.

(15) Pushkaramsa represent Pushkara Navamsa of 3o-20' in a Rasi which is its most ausupious part. Each Rasi has two Pushkara Navamsa and thus their total in 12x2 = 24. These Navamsa are owned by the benefic planets and can predict benefic results, when applying in muhurata, prasana and timing of events, Jupiter when in pushkara bless the native with plenty of wealth and progress in life. In Navamsa for the purpose of self one has to see the strength of 5th house in D-9 of Lagna, Lagna Lord, the Sun and dispositior of the Sun. For analysing one's poorva punya karma's how will they fruitify. Lagna, lagna Lord, 3rd house, 3rd Lord, Saturn and its dispositor in D-9 they will talk of one's endurance in this life. Poorva punaya karma's and their afflictions can be seen from 5th houses/ 5th lord and from the Karka Jupiter and its dispositior. Now where you are analysing spouse, Lagna, Lagna Lord, 7th house, 7th Lord, Venus and its dispositor. Foreign travels and associated things, the 3, 7, 9, 12 houses/ Lords (Kalapursha's 3th lord Gemeni and its Lord Mercury alongwith Venus). When talking of foreign settlements and diseases, Lagna, Lagna Lord, 6th lord, Ketu and dispositor of Ketu, for diseases and curing of disases Rahu and dispositior of Rahu (in transit).

Don't forget Pushkara Bhaga as well whcih is one point in the Pushkhara Navamsa which gives especially good result.

Follow this link to get the Pushkhara Navamsa and Pushkhara Bhaga.

http://www.komilla.com/pages/Pushkara2of2.html

(16) Based on ancient theories behind the vargas, the navamsa reveals your spiritual 'potencies', inner strength, or the positive provisions of your good karma.
Especially your vargottama planets between your rasi and navamsa, and those planets conjoined in the 'kendras' or 'trikonas' of the navamsa will show the 'outlets' by which your spiritual provisions can be accessed.

(17) 5th House of Navamsa (An interesting example on children)

Jupiter and Mars are both in Cancer Navamsa where Jupiter is exalted and Mars is debilitated. Mars is in Pisces and therefore Pisces becomes Navamsa lagna for Mars in Cancer navamsa. So Mars goes to the 5th house with Jupiter. This gives the following information about the 5th house matters:

1) Mars is in the 5th house, which is bad and further it is debilitated - but Mars is still a masculine planet indicating male children.
2) Jupiter in the 5th house which is bad if supported by another malefic indication, but in this case Jupiter is exalted, thus indicating benefic results.
3) The exalted Jupiter in the 5th house indicates five sons, but the presence of debilitated Mars seems to indicate that this number can be reduced by three, as Mars indicate the number three.
4) The final result will be only two living sons. As a matter of fact the 5th house being the sign Cancer ruled by the Moon also indicates this number, since Moon indicates the number two.

In Nadi astrology the number indicated by a planet is the number of the weekday of that planet. No. 8 and 9 are however ruled by Rahu and Ketu. It works like this:

No. 1 = Sunday (Sun)
No. 2 = Monday (Moon)
No. 3 = Tuesday (Mars)
No. 4 = Wednesday (Mercury)
No. 5 = Thursday (Jupiter)
No. 6 = Friday (Venus)
No. 7 = Saturday (Saturn)
No. 8 = Rahu
No. 9 = Ketu

They can be divided into either odd or even numbers, this way:

Odd (1, 3, 5, 7 & 9) = Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Ketu
Even (2, 4, 6 and 8) = Moon, Mercury, Venus and Rahu

The smiley icon is actually '8'.

Please observe that the odd numbers include the masculine planets, while the even numbers include the feminine ones. However, if we want to find out the number of something from the chart, it maybe useful to see if the ODD or EVEN planets are dominating in the relevant house. In many cases it will be sufficient to know if the person has an odd number (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) or an even number (2, 4, 6, 8) of siblings, children, wives or whatever.

Anyway, in this present case there is a qualified significator of sons in cancer navamsa, sons can be predicted when Jupiter or Saturn transits Cancer Rasi or its trines.

Actually the person got the first out of two sons when Jupiter was in Cancer itself, but the birth was followed severe psychological troubles for this person. This is because of Mars in Cancer gets much too emotional.

The second son was born when Saturn was transitting in Scorpio in trine to Cancer.

Khoo,

Why is dasa of planet in 4ht house in navamsa considered challenging?
Can you validate it based on principles or if classics mention it somewhere?

Ghrishnewar

I got this from everywhere in the internet especially the part of the type of signs then the ruler cannot be placed in specific Navamsas. Most of them use Nadi Astrology which other than Devakaralam, I do not have the others - like the one by C S Patel on Predicting Using Navamsa and Ashtakavarga.

As for the source in the internet, I paste it from the webpage onto a microsoft word document so did not keep track of the link. You may want to search in the internet for the source using keywords like Navamsa. All are from practising astrologers.

Aside from the above, which has nothing to do with my source, I also saw a post in this forum that says that 4th of Navamsa is the 64th Navamsa and that is generally not a good place for planets which is true. But this point, I repeat, I did not include in the above points.

Over here the Navamsa means the house which the planet is in in the Navamsa chart.

Dear vhb

Anytime if a result is pronounced based on exchange of two planets, if another planet is added to the exchange loop it modifies the original character of the exchange of the planets considerably. So it does not apply.

Hi

Debilitation Navamsa of a planet is considered final even though when assessing a planet's strength we also take D-12 into account (this is according to classics). This is because D-12 is only HALF A NAVAMSA chart. It re-cycles back to the 1st Bhava from 7th Bhava onwards. The 1st 6 Bhavas and the last 6 Bhavas of D-12 correspond to the 1st 6 Bhavas of Navamsa.

Hi Rajan

Well here Jupiter is in Vargottama (the real Vargottama as defined by classics) between Rasi and Navamsa so it gives very good results.

Using Nadi techniques, set up a chart with Pisces as Ascendant (Jupiter in Pisces in Rasi). Then count from Jupiter in Pisces in Rasi to Jupiter in Navamsa and place Jupiter there. Jupiter is in Pisces in Ascendant!!!!!!!

That is why Vargottama is VERY GOOD. It has invisible chart acting in the background with the planet in the Ascendant. In your case the planet in its own sign as well. Wow!

Note that depending on the planet, a planet in its own sign in Navamsa or Rasi can be better than Vargottama. For example Saturn in Aires in Vargottama means the background chart has Saturn opposite its digbala point of 7th house ie. in the Ascendant and debilitated which is strong somewhat because it is placed in the Ascendant but not say fantastic because of the debilitation.

Without knowing your Moon's Rasi position, I do not know what is the background chart characteristics acting for the Moon (like what I did for Jupiter above!).

Hi vhb

As long as a planet is in the SAME sign in both Rasi and Navamsa, it is considered the real Vargottama as defined by classics.

The background chart would be Mars in Pisces in the Ascendant. This is a strong and moderately good position. Moderately good because Vargottama is always good (after all your divine chart is aligned with your physical existence chart). But Pisces is a watery sign and it somehow drenches Mars fiery nature. Mars in 1st also means impulsiveness in behviour at times although it is much watered down because it is in Pisces.

Dear Khoo,

Thanks for reply sir. One Mistake in my query "jupiter is retrograde". & Moon in 7th (Capricon) in Rashi Chart.

Secondly, If Rasi Chart Ascendant is Cancer "Saturn In 1st house & Moon in 7th house" but Navamsha Ascendant is Libra & Saturn (4th & fifth lord ) in 11th house (Leo) in Navamsha Chart, Saturn is bad in leo in navamsha for native but as per astrology 11th house is upchaya house and all the malefic planet produce good result in eleventh house

& Why Saturn in Leo Navamsa is almost always bad ?

Hi Rajan

I assume Jupiter is still in Pisces so no change for the background chart except that Jupiter is retrogade in Pisces in the 1st house. That makes it extremely strong and it is also ruling two of the best kendras in the chart - 1st and 10th.

For the background chart for the Moon, it has Capricorn Ascendant and Moon is in the 3rd house. Moon rules the 7th house in the Capricorn Ascendant background chart.

For your second query about Saturn, yes if you look at Navamsa as an overall chart then Saturn is well placed in the 11th house. Also in this case the background chart has Cancer Ascendant with Saturn in Leo. Finances not so good as Saturn is ruling the 8th house of big losses (although it can also give inordinate gains at times). Overall, Saturn in Rasi, Navamsa and the background chart, Saturn is above average because of the Navamsa indications.

Now why is Saturn in Leo Navamsa bad? Leo is ruled by the Sun and indicates confidence. With Saturn in Leo, the person's self-confidence is dampened which is bad because Navamsa is the place where the Sun can truly shine. It is a Dharma division and Sun is a Dharma planet. The self is much depleted in strength both physically and mentally.

do the planets need to be placed in the pushkara navamsa or do aspects work just as well? if not, would aspects have a way of lessening the promised results...

is it just the placement of rahu/ketu with venus which would determine marrying outside the community? if there is a benefical aspect of say an exalted jupiter who owns only good houses on this combination, would this come to pass ?

Dear Rose

It would have to be planets placed in Pushkara Navamsa. Then if that planet gets aspects from other planets in other positions, the beneficial effects get modified accordingly but it is still beneficial. For example my Jupiter is in Pushkara Bhaga in 19 degree 11 minute Aquarius (the exact Pushkhara Bhaga point would have to check the link - this point is the best for the Pushkhara Navamsa ruled by Rahu within Shabbitashik). It makes my Jupiter very strong. When I am down and out, opportunities come out of nowhere. This Pushkhara Bhaga is on top of the Pushkhara which is ruled by Pisces - Jupiter's own sign and hence very well placed in Navamsa (not only Pisces but Jupiter is at Pushkhara Bhaga point).

Now Sun aspects my Jupiter. This rejuvenating of life force (Jupiter rules life giving) is provided by my father who support me physically, spiritually, mentally (as a companion) all the way.

So this is how you look at Pushkhara Navamsa - the planet placed there has the karakatwa signification, aspects would give you clue on the details on how that is achieved.

Regarding of Venus conjunct Rahu and Ketu aspect, according to Saptarishis Astrology, one of the articles say that Venus making any aspect with Ketu in Rasi (trine or conjunction) gives bad relationships and the marriage would fail. Ketu dissolves anything and since Venus rules marriage and Venus mixed with Ketu rules tapas, it is like a penance because marriage can be considered a bliss granted by God.

Now back to your question. Jupiter in Navamsa is strong. 7th to Jupiter rules social standing. 9th of Jupiter rules fortune. 5th of Jupiter rules the divine.

These aspects of Jupiter do help to soften Venus conjunction with Rahu/Ketu. I would say the 7th aspect of Jupiter which rules the social standing given by the husband to the wife is the strongest of the three that would help to cement the relationship within the clan or community ie. the lady would find a husband within the clan. All the more so if Venus conjunct Ketu and Jupiter conjunct Rahu in the opposite sign as then Jupiter's benevolent rays would be enhanced by Rahu. But even with this last configuration, Venus is very strong as Venus is the main karaka in the Navamsa chart unless Jupiter is placed in the 7th or rules the 7th or better still, both. Even better would be in addition if the dispositor of Venus conjuncting one of the nodes in a sign goes over to the sign where Jupiter is placed.

In the case of a male chart with the configuration just stated, it would mean that his high social standing in society would mean that his wife comes from within his clan since his choice of partners within the clan would not be lacking, whereas in the female chart it would mean that the husband most likely would be a social figure of high standing within the woman's clan.

When all's said and done, research (as I mentioned above) shows Venus conjuncting Ketu is a strong sign for the breakup of marriages and this should apply to the Navamsa chart as well.

Sir, I feel in your chart Jupiter aspects your Sun from the 8H. Moreover Ketu has enmity with Venus. Ketu is flag, moksha, root, very small, piercing, fire, smell, if conjunct with the planet in own house , make that planet ten times more powerful[ Flag].Conjunction of Ketu with Saturn in 7H has made Saturn very - very powerful, in your case. But Ketu has enmity with Saturn has given you complexity in relationship, which is difficult to maintain for a long time. Regards anu

What about conjunction of kalatrakaraka venus with rahu and aspect by saturn and ketu, thereby three malefics being related with sukra. Of course moon is also aspecting but moon himself is associated with 3 malefics by conjunction and drishti. Would it affect relationships?

Hi Anuradha

Yes, you have HIT THE NAIL ON THE SPOT. My relationships are very trying and difficult to sustain. With my father is no exception Saturn being PiK standing for father. Heated arguments and different viewpoints and sometimes he has symptoms akin to nervous breakdown, loss of sleep, stomach upsets etc. because of me.

But then the saving grace is that 9th to Sun which signifies father as well and Jupiter also ruling 9th, and Jupiter being in Pushkhara Bhaga, just at the point of tension and stress, he concedes and we make up.

Pushkhara Bhaga is one point in Vedic Astrology that is often overlooked. It is very powerful - like the fountain that spring up from the source of a brook.

This has been going on like this for some years now - the relationship with my father.

A planet holding debilitated positions in both Rasi and Navamsa is akin to having a background chart with the ascendant sign same as the planet's placement sign and the planet sitting on the 1st house. It is generally not good.

Mitigating factors would be the planet rules trine houses in that chart (the background chart).

Dear khoo,

What happen when debiliated mercury placed in 11th house of navmansha and Jupiter-venus-mars placed in 2nd house of navmansha. Here jupiter and mercury exchanging their place. Would it consider as a neech bhanga yoga? Saturn and moon is in ninth house of navmansha, while Sun-rahu as an atmakarak and amatyakark respectively placed in ascenednt(tauras).

Also want to know , my wife has tauras ascendent rashi chart and her navmansha has pisces ascendent. You know very well that Saturn is yogakark for tauras lagna. Here her saturn venus is placed in sixth house of navmansha which is leo. And you said that saturn is bad in leo navmansha. Do u think here her navmansha saturn detoriate her yogakarak saturn ?? It is also said that saturn gives good result in upachya house. So her saturn placed in 6th in navmansha gives good result or bad? I m totally confused.

Could you check out her detail? 13th november 1981, 18:11, Jaipur, Rajasthan, India.

Thank you.

following the good post on navamsa pl. clarify in your experience whether a planet debiltated both in rasi and navamsa is weak or strong. some hold double debility means exalted position for the planet.

it is vargottam planet. It is not exalted. Vargottam makes the effects powerful even though it is is in debility. Effects will depend on planets agenda...functional malefic or benefic in rasi/navamsa.
