Upapada lagna

respected astrologers,
i have read online that if 12 th lord is in 12 th house, one needs to count ten places from the 12th house to find the arudha lagna. In my case 12th lord saturn is in 12th house i.e aquarius, so 10 places from it comes out to be scorpio(9th house). Also one of the sites calculated it to be aries. plz can anyone clarify and explain the meaning of that correct upapada lagna after finding out the same. my ascendant is pisces.

i have by mistake mentioned arudha lagna above. it is upapada lagna.

For Scorpio and Aquarius, two lords are considered as owners. Mars and Ketu for the
former and Saturn and Rahu for the later. There are additional rules to determine
the padas for these two houses.

In your case, Rahu has to considered as the owner of Aquarius. Hence, UL falls in Leo.

thanks a lot for replying to my query .
there are certain things i needed to clarify:
1. UL in leo means i need to see placement of sun...right?

2. In my birth chart 12th lord saturn is in nak of dhanishtha pada 3...will this info change the upapada lagna. rahu is in nak of anuradha pada 3 (@10 degrees 21min. approx)

3. also sir, out of saturn and rahu you chose rahu as the ruler of aquarius in my case. is it because of ascendant in pisces??

I am so glad that this topic has come up for discussion and so many thanks to Arshi for putting it up. Reading the classics, it seems there are three types of Upapada lagna.
1st....... Parashara in Vol 1 BPHS defines Upapada/Uparooda as the aruda of the second house from the lagna ascendant.
2nd....... Varahamihira says that for Lagna ascendant in odd sign, it should be taken as Aruda of 12th house BUT if the asc is in even sign, then it should be aruda of second house.
3rd........ Jamini categorically says that aruda of 12th house from lagna ascendant is the UL.

I am Capricorn ascendant. If I take aruda of 12th as my UL, my marriage should have met with a violent end long time ago. But if I take aruda of 2nd as my UL, my marriage is long, happy. I have been married for nearly 35 years and going strong. I have seen similar disparity with other horoscopes.

I would be very grateful, if someone here could resolve this dilemma for me. As things stand I am inclined to follow Varahamihira's definition but am open to suggestions. They say that in astrology, if you are in dillema, Siva helps you get the answer in his own mysterious way. Maybe this topic coming up is an indication of that divine help.

You have to see the planets placed in leo, planets aspecting leo and the placement
of sun and the aspects on it. You may consider the sign leo as lagna and treat the other
houses to analyse UL. For example, 2nd house and 7th house from any house are marakas.
So in your case planets placed in virgo and aquarius can break or bring in differnece of opinions
and fights in marriage. This will happen based on the fundamental characteristics of the native.

There are two methods to calculate a ' pada '. The pada for the 12th house is called upapada or
Gauna pada. The pada of the lagna is called Aruda lagna. One method of calculation is to
find the house lords placement from the house under consideration. Second method is to find
the longitudinal distance. You may take your chart and just try to find AL using both methods.
Jhora software gives both options and you may use it to check your maths.

For Scorpil and Aquarius if one of the lord is placed in the house under consideration,
then the other planet is to be used for calculation. Since saturn is in 12th, you have to
take rahu for calulation. Rahu is ten houses from aquarius and hence ten from where
rahu is places is leo. Hence your Ul falls in Leo.

can you plz let me know how to interpret the following:

--> i have venus in 6th house in leo which is upapada lagna and 2nd from UL which is virgo i.e 7th house has jupiter and sun.


--> venus(in 6th house) and saturn(in 12th house aquarius) mutually aspect each other.


--> lord of UL is itself in 2nd house with benefic jupiter(lagna lord).
