I have been trying to learn vedic astrology for quite a while now but am still confused about basic interpretation principles due to different sources seeming to say different things. If anyone could help with this I would really appreciate it:
1) How do you interpret malefics / benefics? So it is possible to have either a natural malefic & temporal malefic, or a natural benefic & temporal malefic, or a natural malefic & temporal benefic, or a natural benefic & temporal benefic. So for example, if you have a natural benefic ruling the 8th, what is the difference in practice compared to a natural malefic ruling the 8th.
2) What factors make a planet produce positive / benefic results, regardless of its benefic / malefic status? For example, some sources say if a planet is aspected by benefics it can produce benefic results even if weak in the 12th. But what other factors should be considered for a planet to behave benefically and how do you weight these factors?
Example 1: Sun ruling the 12th house & placed in the 1st. Sun with Jupiter and waxing Moon. No full malefic aspect. Sun in friendly sign.
Example 2: Mercury ruling 1st house & placed in the 12th. Mercury with Rahu. Aspect from Saturn (from 4th). No full benefic aspect. Mercury in great friends sign.
How would you judge these two placements? What other information do you need to fine tune this?
Thank you for your help!

Hi,
You will learn faster by:
1. Reading the books of great authors like Parashara or Jaimini;
2. By learning under the care of a Guru;
3. By seeing a lot of charts.
If you just try for now to understand the principles, it will be very hard to learn. You must try to apply a principle learnt or read in a book on charts. By reading, reading, reading and seeing, seeing, seeing, you will learn.
We must look at a planet to see if it is malefic or benefic (natural and functional); in which sign it is in; in which house it is in; with which planets it is yuti with; which planets/ houses it aspects; which planets apects the said planet; which Rasi/ planet has argala on it; on what Rasi/ planet has argala this planet; what strenght has this planet; in which Avastha is this planet in; in which Nakshatra this planet is in; in which Pada of Nakshatra this planets it is in; which planets aspects this planet in the Nakshatra it is in; in which situation is this planet in Divisional charts; what Yoga forms etc.
You can take a well- known chart and put it here, on this topic, and we will learn togheter.

@Helenbean,
I have touched upon some of these aspects here: http://lightonvedicastrology.com/phpBB3 ... 3&p=219659
Though that post was for a specific query, nonetheless there are some points mentioned therein which s can provide a starting point about basic interpretation rules.

Hi thank you for your replies, how about looking at the chart of Michael Jackson to learn? Birth details are: 29th August 1958, 7:33PM, in Gary (IN) USA.
@Marian I: I know quite a few of those factors that you have listed but some I am not sure of (Yuti? Argala? Pada of Nakshatra?) but my main probem is balancing the influences, as pretty much always you will have some bad and some good factors, so how do you decide what the outcome is? What are the overiding factors?
I would love to study under a Guru but have never found anyone unfortunately. Perhaps it is more difficult to find in the UK? Or maybe that I have a debilitated Jupiter in 12th house in my chart - I did read that this can stop you finding a Guru.
@Chandralagna: Thank you for this link I will have a look at it.

Hi,
Yuti means conjunction of planets, argala is like another type of aspects and Pada means the 1/4 part of a Nakshatra. If a man has Jupiter yuti Mercury in Virgo, and Sun is in 11th from them, Sun has argala on them. If another man has the same combination of Jupiter-Mercury, but Sun it's not in 11th, the results will differ. About Padas, exists results given even for plasment of planets in each Padas of Nakshatra, plus aspects on these planets etc.
Yes, we can discuss and learn on the chart of M. Jackson. Who did the rectification of his chart? I have another t.o.b. But it is good, we can try to rectify his chart
.
I think that in UK are many Gurus, not one or two.
P.S. So, for the time given by you of his chart, AL is in Taurus, aspected by Venus. This can show a singer/ entertainer, but we must see many other things. What do you think?
Edit: It is not necessary that only a god or a bad result will emerge from a position of planets. It can be bad and it can be good, but in most cases will be just a blend of the two, like the gray colour made from black and white.

M

Hi,
Let's see if Pisces Lagna is his Lagna (for the time 19:33).
1. The 8th house is in movable sign (Libra), and Venus is in another movable sign (Cancer). The 8th lord from AL is Jupiter, placed in a movable sign, Libra. This gives death in a foreign country, but he died at home;
2. None of the rules based on Punya Chakra (the chart of the time of death) works for this time.
Thus, the chart is not rectified.
In Punya Chakra:
1. Sun in transit was in Gemini;
2. Saturn in transit was in Leo;
3. Tithi was ruled by Mars;
4. Lagna was in Aries for reported time [but he was already death at that time].
For Cancer Lagna (my rectification), A8 is in Gemini, and Sun in transit was in Gemini. AL is in Virgo, and Saturn in transit was over Mercury, lord of AL. The Tithi of death must be connected with the 5th house of natal chart. Mars (lord of Tithi) is very strong in mulatrikona and aspects the 5th house as the lord of this house (very clear). The Lagna of Punya Chart must be in trikona or 7th from natal AL. When he died, Lagna was in Pisces, the 7th house from natal AL.
Now, the 8th house from Cancer is in a fixed sign (with its lord Saturn in Scorpio-fixed sign). The 8th lord from AL is in own sign in a movable sign (Mars in Aries).But the 8th house from AK planet, Rahu, is a fixed sign, Taurus. So, 2 of 3 shows death at home. Yes, he died at home, in the country of his birth.
Death came in Saturn dasa, Jupiter antardasa (in the Dasa applicable to his chart: Chaturaseeti Sama Dasa). Saturn is very big maraka planet for Cancer Lagna, and Jupiter is afflicted by Rahu, the co-lord of 8th house. His personal physician was charged for homicide (Jupiter yuti Rahu shows homicides in astrology).
"Saturn & Mandi [in the 3rd house] indicate snakebite, poison, water and bondage as the cause of death" (Jaimini Sutras 2.2.19).
"If Saturn is in the aforementioned Navamsa [of planet in 8th house in Rasi] the natives consumes poison (or poisonous substances) [as the cause of death]" (Jaimini Sutras 3.3.54).
In the 3rd house from AL (which shows death) is Saturn aspected by Rasi Drishti by Mandi. He died of a overdose of some drugs given by his physician: death by poison. Moon is in 8th house in Rasi and is with Saturn in Aquarius in Navamsa: death by poison.
The real time of birth is 2:35.
Now we can learn using his chart.
P.S. Let's all students of astrology learn to make a rectification. It is better to learn something for a entire lifetime from a single rectified chart, than to learn nothing from thousand of unrectified charts.

M

Hi,
We can apply many more techniques on this chart to be sure that the rectification is good.
1. Bhrigu Proggresions
The 51th years of age is shown by the 3rd house from Lagna and the 3rd house from Mars. Both these houses are ruled by Mercury, which is in conjunction with Sun in Leo in the 2nd house: the death in that year is clearly shown.
2.Transit
a. Dictum: Saturn in transit over the 22 Drekkana or the Lord of this Drekkana. Mercury is this Lord, and at death, Saturn was over Mercury in Leo;
b. Dictum: Saturn in transit over the Rasi identical with the Navamsa occupied by the 8th Lord or aspected by him (or in trines, 7th). Saturn was in Leo, in 7th from the Rasi occupied by the 8th Lord in Navamsa (Saturn itself), and Leo is aspected by natal Saturn;
c. Dictum: Jupiter in transit over the Rasi which is the Navamsa occupied by the natal 8th Lord. Jupiter in transit was in Aquarius, the Rasi in Navamsa occupied by Saturn, the natal 8th Lord;
d. Dictum: Saturn in transit over the Rasi or Rasi identical with Navamsa occupied by:
-the 8th Lord from Lagna or Moon;
-Gulika;
-Saturn;
-The Lord of the 22th Drekkana from Lagna/ Moon;
-The Lord of the 64 Navamsa from Lagna/Moon in Navasma.
Saturn was (-) over Mercury, the 8th Lord from Moon; (-) Dispositor of Gulika, Mercury; (-) over Mercury, 22 Drekkana Lord from Lagna and (-) in 7th from navamsa of Saturn, the 22 Drekkana Lord from Moon.
e. Dictum: Saturn in transit over Gulika or his trikona houses (night birth) or over the 7th from Gulika or the trikona there from (day birth). He was born at night, thus this rule did not worked here. He was in transit in trikona from the 7th from Gulika;
f. Dictum. 3rd Lord Long+ 8th Lord Long= N, and Saturn must transit this point.
122,27 (Mercury)+ 181,1 (Rahu, co lord of 8th house)= 303, 37, which is Aquarius. Saturn in Transit was in 7th from N point;
g.Dictum: 6th Lord Long+ 6th Lord Long+ 12th Lord Long= N, and Saturn must transit this point.
185,09 (Jupiter)+ 181,1 (Rahu)+ 122, 27 (Mercury)= 488,44; 488,46- 360= 128,46. This point it is 8 degree of Leo. Saturn in transit was in Leo;
[Some say that for a night birth Saturn must be in 180 degree from this Point. Exactly like in the case of Gulika, the reverse was the case].
h. Jupiter in transit over the Sign or Navamsa occupied by;
-The Lagna Lord,
-The 22 Drekkana Lord from Lagna/ Moon.
Jupiter in transit was in Aquarius, the Sign/ Navamsa occupied by Lagna Lord and The Lord of the 22 Drekkana from Moon, Saturn (Navamsa).
3. Transit of Sun and the month of Death
Dictum: Sun in transit in 6th, 8th or 12th from natal Venus. Sun in transit was in Gemini, in 12th from natal Venus.
4. Transit of Moon and the day of Death
Dictum: Moon must trasnit over Sun or Navamsa of Sun. Moon in transit was in Cancer, the Navamsa occupied by natal Sun.
There are many more rules.
5. Sahama. Saturn in transit was in Leo aspectig the Jiva Saham in Taurus (life) and Apamrityu Sahama in Libra (bad/ untimely death).
