Affliction, afflicted planet. We find those terms very often that so and so planet is afflicted by so and so planet.
Please stop banging your head if I sound outright stupid hehe but, what exactly is an affliction? I mean is it caused by
1. Graha drishti
2. Rashi Drishti
3. Positioned in Kendra/ kona to each other
3. All, individually or severally?
And when we say two planets are mutually aspecting each other, do we essentially mean that they are opposite each other (hence a mutual grah drishti?) Or Is it just a case of Jupiter and Rahu given only these two have 5th and 9th drishti. Or can we combine a rashi drishti and a graha drishti as mutual aspect? Example - Rahu in pisces and Mars in Scorpio. Hence rahu has 5th drishti on Mars though Mars has none they are placed in a trine. Is it a mutual aspect?
Last stupid question, many a times we talk about malefic in dushthana make them less malefic (correct me if I'm wrong) then, why do we consider Rahu in Kendra to be better? (Or we don't?)

Affliction is usually for conjunction of a say functional benefic with functional or natural malefic.
Say for Dhanur lagna, if jupiter is conjunct with saturn, venus, rahu, ketu etc, then this is affliction for jupiter and so on.
Mutual aspect is by two planets being 7th to each other. Otherwise they cannot aspect each other since jupiter aspects 5,7,9th, sat 3,7,10 and mars 4, 7 and 8th.
Yes, malefic in dushthana makes it less malefic, but we cannot say it is entirely bad for them to be in good places like kendras and konas. There are both good and bad things but it is preferable for them to be in dustanas.

Just two more things, if you may please. When we say conjunction, given we use whole house system unlike western, is the mere presence of two planets in one of the house can be regarded as conjunction? Say, even when they are more than 20 degrees apart in the same house?
More over, if the functional malefic are to determined by lords of dushthana or lords of maraka or both? In case dhanu lagna can we term mercury, Venus, Saturn as functional malefics? (Marakas and lord of 6th, luminaries being lord of 8th are not considered malefic I guess?)

Yes even when they are more than 20 degrees apart in the same house it is conjunction but the ill effect will decrease as the degree difference between them increases. So is the effect of combustion also.
Yes for dhanu lagna mercury, Venus, Saturn can be termed as functional malefics but still mercury also does some good being kendra lord and so is milder. Yes, luminaries are not considered malefic.
