Dear Group Members,

Request you to kindly provide your viewpoints on the scenario.

I would like to share one of my recent experience. An astrologer asked one of known person to wear an emerald in silver for certain things. Now when the person searches online the cost of emerald varies to a very large extent like 13,000 per ratti to 50,000m however when he asked one of his known jeweller, he said that he would provide him with a superior quality lab tested emerald at a rate of Rs. 450 per ratti.

Now the question is that, the jeweller is also trustworthy but is a 13 k or 50k emerald is of very superior quality and a Rs. 450 emerald is not. What about the lab testings here?? Will the Rs. 450 emerald not work and if yes, then what could be the difference in such a high prices.

How to know what is authentic and what is not??

Awaiting your suggestions.

Buying the right gemstone at the right price is a really tricky thing. There never is a standard rate for gemstones and we are not even aware of the quality, but from what I know the best emeralds are from Colombia and are somewhat expensive, the cheapest varieties are from Pakistan and Afghanistan .
If you are to believe in gem therapy then you have to agree that genuine emerald will give results rather then substitutes or lab grown ones but some jewelers nowadays pass on the lab grown or cultured ones as original.

Some things to keep in mind while checking an emerald
1) It will be dark green in color, cloudy and very little transparent compared to diamond or other gems
2) Natural emeralds will have some inclusions, totally clear ones can be cultured ones.
3) Big size emeralds are rare to find so the bigger it goes the price per carat goes up compared to smaller ones.

The lab has to be government-run and not a private lab.

It's possible that the lab itself is giving fake certificates, if it is not run by the Govt of India.

There is a likelihood that the 450/- one and the expensive varieties are both fakes and the expensive ones are being sold at exaggerated rates if they are genuine.

The best approach is to buy a gem from a Government of India shop, where gems are being sold at reasonable rates fixed by the Indian Government.

There are State Government and Central Govt emporia run by the govt in most of the state capitals and also in Delhi. It's best to buy gems from these emporia rather than from a private business shop.

PS - Rajasthan is an important place for mining gems, but I would still recommend only Govt emporia.

Thanks Saindhavi & rathodp for your replies.

These would help a lot and the best idea is to purchase from govt. owned shops, will be beneficial for the next purchase.

Rothodp, will ask my friend to check for the given qualities in the emerald.

Pari,

Regardless of quality, unless used in some particular health related matters, gemstones simply don't work. So don't waste money.
