As I study horoscopes, I have noticed Mercury (though 5th lord), for Kumbh lagna, can be troublesome as it has ownership of 8th house. Same with Jupiter for Simh lagna.
I have a friend who has Kumbh lagna. He is a physician. Mercury is in 11th with Saturn in 9th. Rahu in 5th. He ran Rahu MD, Mercury AD and had difficulty finding a job even though he was super specialised. He had broken relationships and trouble getting married. This is just one of many examples I have encountered. My brother ran Jupiter MD and he is Simh lagna. He too had struggles during that time.
So why do most classical texts say Mercury is a "shubh" planet for Kumbh...(and Jupiter for Simh)...just due to ownership of 5th? But how can one discount the unpredictability of the 8th house?

Hello Tothestars,
Yes you have rightly observed 8th house effects of mercury for Kumbha Lagna. As kanya is multrikona rasi for kumbha natives it can give sudden troublesome period during mercury dashas. They can be very stressful too. But then it also lords 5th house which is a good house and excellent for learning if it has influence of jupiter or mercury. So it will give good effects of 5th house as well. Similar logic applies for jupiter (for Leo Lagna).
There might be other factors why your friend was not able to find job during mercury dasha as I dont think it can be the only factor for having job related issues.

Star,
I agree with the point you have made, but you have given a wrong example to prove your point. Mercury in the chart of your friend is having double affliction: it is conjunct Ketu and aspected by Saturn, afflicting Mercury severely.
5th house is the house of romance, and in this case as 5th lord is so much afflicted, his relation broke. As 8th lord, maybe Mercury wouldn't have done so much damage, but as it is afflicted severely, he found it difficult to get a job.
Did he undergo tremendous emotional suffering during this Rahu-Mercury period? The chart shows that as Rahu is in the 5th house of mind, and Mercury, the 5th lord, is severely afflicted.
So in this case it is the severe affliction of Mercury, and not 8th lordship, which resulted in the difficult time for the person during its period.

SL,
In astrology first see the birth chart, and then, the dasha. If your birth chart has a good 5th and 7th house and Venus, then you will never have problem in respect to love, how difficult a dasha you maybe are running. Nothing can happen beyond what a birth chart promises.
In your chart 12th lord Moon is in the 5th house of romance, with Ketu, which is a karaka of detachment/break in relation. Mars is aspecting your 7th house, which shows the aggression you will show in your romantic relations. 7th lord Saturn is with Sun, which shows the ego that will show up in affairs. Venus aspecting 7th house, and Moon in the 5th house makes you fall in love, though.
Is it only in Jupiter periods that you have had problems in personal life or in other periods as well? How about Moon periods or Saturn periods? During those periods things went fine in personal life?
Basab
P.S. Your Jupiter is in a papa-kartari yoga. In d-9 chart it is the 6th lord of conflicts in mutual aspect with 7th lord Saturn, which clearly indicates problems will come in personal life in Jupiter periods. And then, otherwise also, Saturn and Mars, two natural malefics aspecting it is not good.

That's quite interesting, SL. I am wondering why Venus and Mercury periods are tough when they are not that much afflicted in your chart. But the point I was trying to make was it's not that your Jupiter periods were only giving problem in personal life, other periods were also giving similar problems, which clearly suggests that the problem is not there in Jupiter but in your birth chart.
My brother has Leo ascendant. He got married in Jupiter AD, so I can't say Jupiter periods are bad for Leo ascendant people, always.

Yes, it is strange how Venus and Mercury periods can go bad. At least you have a personal life, even if it is a khichdi. I don't have a personal life only. Something is better than nothing, always remember that.

Hi to the stars,
Aquarius and Leo Ascendants cannot be compared for the point you are mentioning.
For Aquarius lagna, Mercury rules 8th H as Virgo is the moolatrikon sign.
For Leo lagna, Jupiter rules 5th H as Sagittarius is the moolatrikon sign.
8th H effects still will be there but then again you cannot compare Jupiter's 8th H effects with Mercury's since Guru tends to give positive things mostly if it is well placed.
Also here Jupiter first gives the 5th H effects

Thanks Janaki, Astrodude, SuryaLagna, and Orange-Man for your discussion and insights. I see your point in regards to Jupiter versus Mercury as 5th and 8th lord. Yes, it is true in that regard- I have observed those with Kumbh Lagna deal with more Mercurian issues than Simh lagna does with Jupiterian ones. Moon and Mercury seem to do the most for Kumbh natives.
Orange-man and Janaki - Yes, he did go through emotional turmoil that time with a breakage of a relationship. His Moon is in Kanya, if I remember correctly. Mars and Venus are in lagna and they aspect the 7th house, and Mars also aspects the 8th (where Moon sits). Thus I calculated for him that during Rahu MD, Mercury AD, and Mars PD he would suffer from the breakage and although I hoped to be wrong...it did occur. When he was younger, he did wear emerald and he told me it did "calm" down his mind but the rollercoaster effect was present during Mercury AD and even PDs. The kicker is he is running Sade Sati until later this year (and although a Kumbh native - effects are noted), with Saturn viewing Mercury.
Another few horoscopes with Kumbh lagna I have seen recently involved Rahu in 5th and Mercury in 11th or in 5th. Interestingly, their "romantic" relationships involved online sites and portals. I assume those to be the effects of Mercury and Rahu on 5th. But they too had rollercoaster effects on their relationships, jobs, and even state of mind- which maybe due to the affliction to Mercury coupled with 8th house lordship.

Hello Star,
For online relationship, look for 3-5 or 3-7 connection in a chart. Yes, Mercury connected to 5th or 7th house can also give online relationship.

Saditya,
It might have been because mercury itself is placed in 8H. That would not affect the person much (last time I checked)
Few might know, I am Kumbha Lagna with Mercury in 4H conjuncted with Jupiter and Venus, moon in 10H, Saturn in 11H
I was born in Mercury MD, say last 3 yrs or so. After birth my survival was in question and then later I spent 1-2 yrs away from my family (in my grandmothers house). Its my belief that since 8H is 10th from saturn, its aspect sort of ensured my survival..
Fortunately I wont have to see its MD again in this life...Ketu MD has been awesome...

It would be interesting to see your horoscope, if you don't mind. Did you note trouble during your other Mercury periods (AD, PD)? Does Jupiter and Venus AD, PD cause issue too as they are associated with Mercury? Has Saturn always been a protective factor for you? And lastly, how have your Sade Satis gone?

I am currently going through Venus(MD)-Merc(AD) period for last 1.5yrs and its not satisfactory for me..
During birth I was in Merc-Sat period and in Venus Saturn Period I finally decided to move out of my brothers shadow..
Cant come up with anything noiticable for Ketu-Merc period(class 1-2 or something)
Sadesatti is in progress..so cant comment on that

Thank you, lifeline, for providing your details. Interesting horoscope. Your Venus is being afflicted to Mercury, and I can see why your current period is not satisfactory. Are you moving a lot (as it occurs in 4th house)? And then Mars further afflicts 4th house with 4th drishti.
