Hi
To evaluate the lagna is just like evaluating any house.
Evaluatin steps :
(1) See whether ther are any natural benefics or trinal lords in it. Also check whether the planets concerned are participating in any Yoga.
(2) See where its dispositor is placed. In Dusthana houses weak. In the 7th house it is strong - sometimes even stronger than when the lord is in the 1st house especially if this involves the lord in participating in an evil youga. For example Jupiter in 1st and Saturn in 7th gives rise to a certain debility. If Jupiter is in its own sign, it may accentuate the debility.
(3) 5th and 9th houses should not have malefics but only benefics. If no benefics, let it remain empty. As the 5th house is a secondary Argala house and the 9th house is the obstruction house for the 5th, preferably to enjoy full beneficial effects, one of them should be empty. (In this case is is OK for the 9th to have planets and the 5th empty even though it is a seoondary obstruction house, because it is such a beneficial house).
(4) Point (3) applies to the 8th house as well. The lord of the 8th being a karaka of the 1st (a house lord in general is the karaka of the 6th house from it) should be strongly placed.
(5) Check the Argala houses. They should be only benefics. If malefics, they must be in their own sign and in a good house. Example, Saturn in Aquarius in the 11th. Only a few exceptions are malefics considered good in Argala houses.
(6) Check the obstruction houses. They should be empty.
(9) If obstruction and Argala houses are both not empty, then see which predominate. Four combinations result in decreasing beneficience (of course the best is benefics in Argala with empty obstruction houses which is covered in the previous points)
(A) Benefics in Argal prevail. The individual can triumph over adversity easily.
(B) Good malefics in Argala prevail. The individual can triumph over adversity with some hard work.
(C) Benefics in obstruction houses prevail. The individual is saved from further damage and even good MAY result from it in the long term depending on the strength of the benefics.
(D) Bad malefics in Argala prevail. This is just the same with bad malefics in Argala with no corresponding planets in the obstruction hosues. It is no good.
(E) Malefics in obstruction hosues prevail. One of the worst possible scenarios you can have.
(10) If there are only planets in the obstruction houses and no planets in the corresponding Argala houses then 9(A) and 9(B) above is even in a worse situation than otherwise.
(11) The 10th house if too strong ie. a planet placed in its own sign and being the overall ruler of the chart can take over the ascendant - but it is still the lagna's choice however it has lost control over the 10th house matters. If the planet placed in the 10th is a malefic, the individuality's personality becomes corrupted by the bad influences and unable to express whatever potential it has be it good or bad naturally - lagna deals with our natural personality.
(12) For the 2nd house, it is better to have the 2nd lord in the 1st than the other way round. Remember the saying "Money is NOT the root of all evil. It is man's perception and hence excessive need for it that causes evil". This happens when the Lagna lord is in the 2nd. Worst, if it mixes with bad malefics in the 2nd, there is no money to talk about.
(13) The 7th house can have malefics, but preferably benefics. But the malefics must be in its own sign (house) and should be friendly to any planets placed in the 1st. Preferably, the dispositor of either 1st or 7th should be placed in the 7th or 1st respectively.
Thanks.

Dear Rajitha,
Were you "talking" about this analysis of mine (When it comes to self-promotion, I am unbeatable
):
"About your AK, it is in Gemini, which makes you sharp and intelligent, and a good communicator. The Saturnine traits like being disciplined, hard working, and being responsible will also be there in you. Saturn is the significator of detachment, so that may also be there. You will be spiritual, modest and down to earth--all Saturnine qualities. You will also show great concern for aged people. You believe in simple living and high thinking.
Saturn, the AK, lords the 8th and 9th houses, which are spiritual houses making you spiritual. 9th house is also the house of fortune, and the 8th, the house of struggles and health problems, so you will find fortune (though after hard work as Saturn is the lord), and at the same time have struggles and health problems as well. Mercury, Mars and the Moon aspect Saturn (Jamini aspect) giving you qualities of Mercury--intelligence, sharpness, wittiness, friendliness and good communication skills; of Mars--aggressiveness, assertiveness, independent nature, boldness, ambitiousness, hard working ability, and the ability to compete and fight adversity; and of Moon--sensitiveness and softness. Saturn being in the nakshatra of Rahu shows that you have to stay in a foreign land. Rahu also gives you strong unfulfilled desires and makes you an extrovert. You will also be diplomatic and impulsive and unconventional about your beliefs. Saturn being in Aries in the D-9 gives you the qualities of Mars, and Venus's conjunction with it makes you romantic, artistic, lover of luxury and at the same time charming. Saturn gets the 12th and 11th lordship in the D-9 chart showing your earning in a foreign land. I feel, Saturn's getting debiliated in the D-9 chart but the debiliation getting cancelled means, you will learn your lessons alright, but after much effort and great delay."

Thanks. Basab.
Rajitha, are you a girl? I only found out recently that you may be a girl through one of the older threads that I came across between you and Basab - not the one Basab posted.
What gave me the impression that you are a guy was the fact that you mentioned you were drinking coffee at the breakfast table one morning reading the newspaper when you saw my post on Ketu and marriage and then you gave a snort of laughter. From what you said, only guys do that ie. read newspaper at the breakfast table.
Thanks.

Hi Khoo, Basab, Rajitha, Learned members,
Sorry to digress from the subject but what combination do you consider to see the possibility for a native to return back to his home land?
Rahu is considered for foreign travel and stay in foreign land/country but what should one consider to see if a person will return back to their homeland/home country. Would appreciate your thoughts,
Thanks

Hi Basab
It was good of you to post the reply you gave to Rajitha. Like I told Rajitha, for Gemini Ascendant (according to an article in Saptarishis Astrology by Ashok - another Ashok not the one in our forum), they are not supposed to put down learned people otherwise they gain misfortune.
For Libra ascendant, they gain beneficience by doination their Jyotish books, in this case your action of ferreting out your past contribution to this post topic and pasting it here amounts to that. Isn't that a coincidence?
Good for you!
Thanks.

Hi Hock Leong,
Are you a girl? I am not sure, but I think you had mentioned it once in one of your posts. Now, if that's not so, i.e you are not a girl, then I would be really surprised because I would have thought you are a girl, even without reading the post of yours where you, I feel, mentioned you are a girl, by reading your post to Rajitha, from which I have quoted a few lines, above. I don't think any guy would say this line (It's always girls who says it) : "From what you said, only guys do that ie. read newspaper at the breakfast table".

Hi Hock Leong,
Thank you for sharing it. I don't know whether it's a coincidence or not, but personally I don't believe in coincidences--I always feel there is a deeper meaning to each and every coincidence.

Well what you said is not true. The social convention is that girls would never comment that they would read a newspaper at the breakfast table and that is a fact. The guys always get to read the newspaper first and that is especially true in an Asian environment and especially in a traditional society like India.
And I was correct, Rajitha is not a girl. He is a guy not wistanding because of the following two reasons and of course also from his own admission (unless it is a lie) :
(1) The pen name is a girl's name.
(2) Notwithstanding your earlier post to him where you tease him a little meaning you did not know of his true gender then.
This is based on acute observation and I do not think that only a girl would say that.
On another note, even the birthday that he claimed it is his, in the earlier email between you and he, he claimed the birthday is not his. Since then, many waters have passed and I don't have the time or bother to go thru each and every email to go and find out.
Thanks.

Hi Hock Leong,
I think you took that comment of mine "I don't think any guy would say this line ..." a bit too seriously (which makes me feel more strongly now that you are a girl
) and misunderstood it as well. See, it's not about whether guys get to read the newspaper first, or girls get to read it first was what I was pointing at, (though you are right about guys getting to read the newspaper first) I said that the way you wrote that line, with an accusation in it--"From what you said, only guys do that ie. read newspaper at the breakfast table"--made me feel that you are a girl and not a guy. Even the lines before the line that I have quoted from your posts--"What gave me the impression that you are a guy was the fact that you mentioned you were drinking coffee at the breakfast table one morning reading the newspaper"--made me feel strongly feel that it's a girl, and not a guy, who is "saying" it. Guys just won't write something like that.
"And I was correct, Rajitha is not a girl."
I never said that you were wrong about his gender, I just said that I felt from what you said that you are a girl, and again that's not just the basis of my saying it because I think you said it once in one of your posts.
"Notwithstanding your earlier post to him where you tease him a little meaning you did not know of his true gender then."
I am not here to flirt with girls
(not a dating site it is, right?), so I don't think I "teased" Rajitha, as you have said I did, thinking him to be a girl. I like joking with people, but that's not restricted to joking with girls. I, like a typical Cancerian, enjoy humour, and try to be funny; that's it.
"On another note, even the birthday that he claimed it is his, in the earlier email between you and he, he claimed the birthday is not his. Since then, many waters have passed and I don't have the time or bother to go thru each and every email to go and find out."
It's interesting that you have read those posts.
Anyway, this discussion is getting a bit too serious, (not that I am not enjoying it
) which is not at all necessary because this is an astrology site, not a matrimonial one.

You shut up and mind your own business! That question was between me and Rajitha and has nothing to do with you!

Dear Hock Leong,
Keep a check on your temper (like I did when you said that objectionable line: "Notwithstanding your earlier post to him where you tease him a little meaning you did not know of his true gender then") and also on what you say in those times--that's my advice to you.
"You shut up and mind your own business!"
One more advice and make sure you follow it: don't ever dare to talk to me like that again.
I guess, you didn't understand what I meant when I said what I said, leading to your reacting in such an ill-mannered way. If you were intelligent enough to understand my posts, you would have realized that I never got into what you and Rajitha were discussing.
