Hi Everyone,
I enjoyed reading everyone's feedback on my previous post. I would be interested in your insights into my career in general and specifically as regards the following situation.
The organization where I work is, like many others, responding to the economy with layoffs, though less than some. I dont think it will happen to me, though you never know, and I am trying hard to prevent any of my staff being laid off. What is the likely outcome?
I think I am a good boss and a good leader: do you agree? I believe I could go higher, but havent yet decided in what capacity.
Shrikanth mentioned that in 2011 my career is due for an upswing-any details? Would it be a promotion where I work now, or in a different organization?
My birth data are: born 17th February, 1955, 6pm, Mumbai, India.

Thanks for the analysis-I agree it is as well to be careful in these times.
Re the layoffs I mentioned, my office survived intact! I had to relocate 3 staff and lost an open position, but nobody was actually laid off. There were layoffs in other units in my Dept, however.
At this point it is always possible there will be additional layoffs if the economy deteriorates further.

Mercury also rules my 3rd house of will and I am a very strong willed person. Natal mercury is in Capricorn in kendra. So why do you assume mercury's movement into 7 is only associated with loss? How is your prediction modified by the 3rd house rulership & natal placement of mercury?
I am not interested in marriage but how the mercury transit affects my job. Dinesh implied that mercury transiting 7 might create a break in my job as it rules 12. My suggestion was that it might not be that bad as it also rules 3, which is NOT a dusthana as I understand the term, but an upachaya, which improves with time. Its effect on marriage is irrelevant as my question was in reference to my career.
Dear Vishvesh,
I am not exclusively focused on mercury. I had a SPECIFIC and rather simple question about it, which nobody has answered. On the other hand, I have received answers to several questions I did not ask.
All I actually asked was whether the fact that mercury is the 12th lord is the only influence on its transit. It IS after all the 3rd lord. SURELY that must play into things? I suppose the fact that it is a malefic results in a bad transit-thank you-I forgot, but the impression I received is that vedic astrologers are too prone to focus exclusively on the 12th house and forget all else in worry about it. My own impression is as you say-its a complex set of transits.
my birth data are posted at the top of this thread.
I am an administrator at a large university, engaged in fundraising, but was a scientist for over 20 years. I have been at my current job since August 2006. My office has been reorganized, which will make communication more problematic. This economy has resulted in a lot of drastic change, mostly unnecessary in my opinion, that will take a long time to work through the system.

Hi Nina,
Yes, I have had a lot of job changes, particularly in the last 10 years where Ive been building a second career. Since 96, i have had 5 jobs. However, each has been an improvement on its predecessor with more $$, and more responsibility, and at more prestigious institutions-lots of moving as well. I am kind of at the end of where I want to go in fundraising but by no means finished building a career so suspect another change of direction is in the cards. Ideally Id like to run a foundation. What are your thoughts?
I think the Mars-Saturn opposition in my chart is its strongest feature as it affects everything and both planets are very strong. In tropical, they are not quite in opposition: does that affect interpretation (bhava chart)?
Honestly, Nina, there are days when I hate my chart. It seems to contain nothing but bad placements and strong malefics and nothing in good houses. I wonder why everything associated with "normal" life is such a struggle-marriage, kids, work, when I am actually very well educated, smart, work very hard, and want to make a significant contribution. My boss is a complete boob but seems to hang on to jobs and has a family. Vedic astrology is really very little help as the only 'bhagya' it seems to understand for women is "marital bliss" which is no use to me. It isnt my idea of bliss. Vedic astrology has little or nothing to contribute to someone like me whose life is outside the "normal" frame, whatever that is. So I may as well continue to do the things I want as well as I can and make plans as I have always done. I get tired of the fact that life always seems to be such a struggle, and seeing boobs promoted is no help, but I have not found astrology helpful either: it just makes me feel bad that I am not Britney Spears-what an idiot.

Hi Nina,
Thanks for the interesting analysis. Rajju yoga certainly fits! The part that concerns me, is the fact that despite Rajju Yoga I still must find SOME way of establishing roots, dealing with aging and retirement etc. THis is where, while vedic astrology might be ACCURATE, it is not necessarily HELPFUL. All the texts Ive read just state that one with rajju yoga will wander about. None of them give any useful advice on managing it. NO astrologer Ive ever met says, this is how you can use Rajju yoga positively to attain your goals. This is how to manage the issues of residence, rootedness, being part of a community. At this stage in my life that is what Id like to do. And at some point I will simply not be able to move around any more. I currently have an offer in a house: it was accepted-now applying for mortgage. I hope I can stay put for awhile. Perhaps one way to manage it is to have many residences and move between them, or I could save money and upgrade to a better place. That to me would constitute a creative and positive way of using a bad yoga, of going WITH the energy. But I have never seen anyone suggest it.
I dont have kids so that is correct.
I have noticed a lot of things seem easier since I turned 40, but maybe its because I just care less and am used to being on my own.
I very much agree with you that we need to take charge of our lives and implement our plans and not just wait around for the stars or whatever to give us permission.
How would you interpret a raja yoga between 5H and 7H? What about between 1H and 4H (moon and venus in 6)? Is the latter a raja yoga or just a conjunction in the 6H?

Very true.

Hi Nina,
Thank you for the expansion and clarification. I have to admit I do like change, new opportunities etc and am constantly looking for new avenues, where I learn more about myself and the world and can use my skills. This is very much a driver for me. I would definitely look for these opps if I were to stay permanently where I am now living.
I have always felt I WAS a pioneer in some way. Re the link with Ruchaka/Sasa yogas, when I was very young I wanted to do things that were new for Indian women (at least in the UK in the 60s-70s). I have done this, though obviously at a certain cost-my relationships. However, choices always have costs as well as benefits. My feeling at the moment is that the choices I made had a cost rather than an obvious benefit when I was young. However, I am now seeing the rewards, so all in all I am pretty happy.
Nonetheless, while I agree overall with what you say at the end of your post about "taking things out on astrologers", there is an aspect to vedic that is not helpful if you are not leading a conventional life. The discipline does seem to be adapting to modern life-moving away from India is no longer seen QUITE as an unmitigated disaster. Indeed-it is now viewed as desirable judging from the many posts on this site. Both love and arranged marriages are discussed. Perhaps it will change further as society changes.
However, it is still negative about people who don't do things the usual way, esp if they are women, and it offers little advice to them. About the only thing women on this site ever discuss is marriage timing/divorce or having kids! There are very few exceptions. The last time I saw an astrologer in India he looked at my chart and exclaimed "I should have been a man!"-offensive and unhelpful. So-my conclusion is to formulate my own rules. As I live "outside" normal structures, "normal" solutions dont apply. As an example, a lot of my friends' kids have recently left home. My friends are moving to the next stage as they see it. This is not a stage that applies to me-I have no kids. I need to do something different.
So-please don't be offended! I very much appreciate the feedback you have been kind enough to provide. I will use those ideas as I reflect upon my life and what it means to me. Thank you!

There is definitely a generational aspect to this question: Im sure it is less of an issue for you than it was for me at your age.
I have read most of the classic texts in translation, and I just roll my eyes. Read "Strijataka" (horoscopy of women)-it is a perfect product of its time. Any woman not married by 15 must of necessity descend into prostitution-statements like that might have been true in 1125, but not now.
I agree with you about religion: they are all the same where women are concerned. However, Ive drifted off topic so will desist for now.

Dear SriRama,
"people blame a woman's horoscope if something bad happens in a marriage or have problems with ..progeny.... but conveniently tend to ignore the flaws in the husband's horoscope"
This item is unfortunately true and I see it on this site-most of the posters concerned they are Manglik are women, not men. Yet-if you take astrology seriously surely it is bad in both genders? It is not even that big a deal-I have an absolutely LOUSY horoscope where marriage is concerned (and proud of it too) but I am most emphatically NOT manglik! My Mars is my best planet! Most people who are Manglik get married anyway, so why bother worrying about it?
So-back to career-I have a good one and accept that as my karma, and am very happy with my life. I am certainly not weeping and wailing about being single and "child-free" by choice at 53....

Dear Vishnoor,
It can be really tough within the Indian community if you dont want to be married or cant get married:I guess from your post the pressure can be as bad for men as for women.
I have not heard the expression Delhi ladoo before.
You are right in that it has been a steep and almost continual struggle. While I have achieved a lot, all the negative crits over the years sometimes make it seem like its nothing much. Nobody values a life of adventure and discovery, just marriage, kids, a job and a house. And my American friends-who were never pressured to marry-cannot understand my ambivalence now I am free to do as I please.
All I can say is I try to be true to myself and do the things that are right for me. If others disapprove-too bad. If career is my karma, then goddamn it I am going to have a really stellar one. I have to-there's nobody out there whose job is to look after me when I get old..........
