The best way to learn astrology

Post by Nora » 23 Jul 2018

Dear all

I find this forum helpful to learn astrology. But I'm wondering if this is the best way to learn or is it better to learn astrology from an astrologer and then come practice here to get more exposure.

The problem in going to an astrologer is that they are often not broad minded to accept new thoughts or ideas. For example, if it's Nadi astrologer he may not accept KP of if it's KP he may not be comfortable with Nadi or KAS

There are a few branches of astrology and I wonder if we should specialise in one particular branch or is coming to forum like this where we find experts from all branches and learning a broad helicopter view of astrology more helpful?

This brings me to my next question...Is it good to be a generalist or specialist when it comes to astrology or both? Can a good astrologer be both?

I find this forum really helpful and I find myself learning faster here...but at least initially it's going to be a mix of all astrology schools and thoughts till I find my own path which is best for me and based on my values...is this the right approach to learning astrology?

Please share your experiences on the above and also your own experience in terms of how you started, under whose tutelage you studied, how long you have been studying on your own etc..

Any books that you recommend to have on my bookshelf?
I mean Classic books that every astrology lover should have

Kind regards

Nora

For astrology natural apt to understand and grasp is essential. Of all planets' strength of mercury is essential to get deep into this.

It is best to learn from a learned person than self. Pick one branch and learn thoroughly.

One should learn to keep analysis to the point. Nobody in real word is interested in 1 and a half page essays bloating analysis and superimposing upon the querist that volume of analysis means the analysis is done deeply. This is usually to wind up the querist so that questions are not raised on his/her imperfections. ;)

Some people can just look up rasi and give solution in a minute. Most transits and calculations are in their mind. A good mars and Venus can give this knack.

Good Jupiter can give extensive and expansive knowledge covering various aspects. Vaaksiddhi of astrologer is very important which is given by Jupiter and mercury. In certain conditions even rahu gives this.

So keeping planetary effects civilized on the self is essential for an astrologer to predict clearly and compassionately.
It's Usually people with bad mars that push aside others and go front ;).

People with bad mars cannot do this task properly. They may predict, but bad mouthing invokes bad effects and weakens planets. The only thing on these people's mind is to amplify self in front of others at any cost. This means rahu's malefic effects sitting on head. So, you see even to learn astrology the foremost to learn is etiquettes to keep malefic effects at bay.

Can we learn properly with malefic effects like those surrounding us ? So good sadhna, life style and most importantly letting go ego is must.

In a nutshell, work in the space in which querist has come, keeping aside self bloating. If this aspect is adapted during early years, it gives way to rich and crisp analysis leading to the good actual resolution.

Like in medical analysis it can be headache but could be due to gastric issues in stomach too. Hence the appropriate remedy to begin to clear root cause.

So you see astrology is much more than just technical understanding of planets. :) .. First lesson is cleansing of ones own aura.

Nora - look for books and PDFs by shri Sanjay rather. You will learn to analyze charts objectively. Basics are taught clearly in his write-ups.

Well said! There are limits to learning from books that are not so clear to a person at the beginning.

Nora,

It may be better for you to learn one branch( preferably the most traditional) under a Guru and then learn the others like KP under someone else. You have spoken about your spiritual Guru elsewhere and even there( where one is joined to the Guru in a very deep manner) ones own practice or ideas need not match the Gurus 100%. Individual karma and vasana colours all of ones experiences. The important thing in discipleship is to accept the Guru for what he or she is ( moral/legal considerations aside in this day and age).

You can learn each technique/branch from someone who is expert at it. Each parampara has its own approach and specific techniques which may not be available to outsiders. Paramparas/regions have their own principal texts that are important to them. Learning them from books would be inferior to learning in person.

I agree with you guys...

Unfortunately I don't have a guru for teaching astrology...besides my spiritual guru does not encourage me learning astrology as of now as I've been given some responsibilities to fulfill So, I'm not formally learning from someone but I might consider that (also if my guru consents later). One of the thing about astrology is that it does get addictive and one starts to perform pariharamd and rituals to bring temporary relief. I mean very few use astrology to attain the highest truth because immidiete problems are there to deal with.

So, I guess you are right...when I get the spiritual maturity with the guidance of my guru maybe I'll learn astrology to see big picture

Kind regards

Yes astroduffer ji learning of basics is a must, the why and how of things and learning from a person who knows the subject is far better and revealing then being self taught.
Nora ji rightly said astrology is a spiritual vidya, the eye of the vedas, and learning this vidya if we don't get spiritual at the same time then it means something is missing. I saw your posts and you are very into this subject to learn it. Wish I had that consistency.
Tejomaya ji and joyd ji yes we have to move step by step, mastering one anga at a time and that too under a competent guru.
This site is one of the best forum on astrology to learn and as well as to try and sharpen your skills at the same time.

Take care

I agree that you should learn from a Guru, however, in absence of one, there is nothing wrong in learning from books. You will have many questions that you could ask here - in absence of a Guru but even absence of a Guru is part of your learning.

The deeper techniques is something you won't find in books. Don't worry. Some day it will come.

All systems of Astrology like vedic astrology jamini KP Nadi kas etc which ever system you follow ultimate results is timing of events .if you analyse a chart stick to one analysis only because mixing systems like jamini and KP iwill totally be a kichidi.lastly don't belittle other systems of Astrology

Hi all

To understand astrology and its various sutra, the best way is to always keep with you two things. These 2 things are the words 'Why' and 'How'. Mere cramming of rules would lead a learner nowhere. But understanding the reason behind those rules;the why and how of those rules will help the person in long run.
Discriminating ability and mathematical skills is another thing which the learner should develop. Along with the readymade software he/she should learn manual calculation of dasha, chart making etc. if he want to delve deep into it.
Humility in a learner is the next big thing. An astrologer is called daivagya, the person who Speaks of the divine or provide divine informations. And since its a spiritual science so inculcating sattvik qualities in mann, karma and vachan helps manifolds.
Lastly and preferably firstly a competent Guru(a real one,I know its hard to get) is needed. As I already said its a divine science, the eye of the vedas, so a Guru is necessary because Astrology is not only about predictions but its also about understanding the cosmos, its behind the curtain workings, its spiritual significance within and without. Its not a solitary science of the mundane but connected to every other part of spirituality be it yoga, tantra, mantra etc. Just like the tithis are an important part in astrology and are employed in astrology in various, numerous ways; same thing is employed in yoga in inhalation and expiration in which the yogi viz. the tithis from amavasya to poornima, the rise of chandra gran and surya grahan etc. in between the two sandhis of expiration and inhalation.
So if anyone wants to learn astrology learn it in a spiritual way. And always be a learner in a Real sense. And it shouldn't be like: Its my way or the highway. But if its only for hobby purposes than it can be; only your way.

Keep learning :?:

Hi,

IMHO, the best way to learn astrology is by application.

First learn one rule, then apply it to as many charts as possible. You'll find it works in some and doesn't in others. Dig deeper to discover why it doesn't work in some cases. You'll find there are exceptions to the rule.

Now you know how to apply a rule and exceptions to that rule. Next, move on to another role.

KMD
