Karnataka government plans to ban astrology shows

Post by rearguard » 08 Dec 2015
A revised anti-superstition legislation that places restrictions on airing astrology shows on Kannada TV channels, among other things, may soon be enacted in Karnataka.
Chief minister Siddaramaiah announced that the government is mulling over a ban on TV astrology shows in a bid to tackle superstition. "Every TV channel wants to air astrology-based shows in Karnataka. There seem to be many viewers for them. In my home too, the scenario is no different. It's time we banned such shows," Siddaramaiah said at an event to felicitate a senior dalit leader here on Monday.
Well, if astrology had been associated with Christianity or Islam, CM Siddaramiah would not have dared say such a thing... :-)

Fine sharing of media reports on proposed legislation by executive body of the state, but any adverse comments on Proposed law or legislation, respect to religion etc unwarranted, and also executive body head name been quoted, such comments should be refrained to be made, The State can slap a sedition charge on such adverse remarks ( Yes freedom of expression is there for every Indians and clearly spelt out in Constitution but there are cavets, Journalists can publish views as they are entitled in newspaper( a recognized legitimate communication but they will not talk about any religion, law or legislation have to be debated by appropriate authority at proper place with in prescribed medium)

p.s I am nowhere connected with Karnataka, I am just making members doesn't resonate any proposed legislation. Let Judiciary debate this issue or ban

By Shyam Prasad S, Bangalore Mirror Bureau | Dec 13, 2015, 04.00 AM IST :

"Chief minister Siddaramaiah's recent comment that astrology-based television shows should be banned may remain a wish as it is not in his or the state government's powers to regulate this. Legal experts point out that 'communication' that includes licensing and regulating content on television channels is the exclusive domain of the union government.

About this, advocate KV Dhananjay says, "Satellite Kannada news TV channels, just like satellite TV news channels in any other language that wish to produce and transmit news programmes anywhere on Indian soil, are licensed by Government of India to do so. A satellite Kannada news TV channel is not even earmarked to transmit only within the Karnataka border - it is authorised to beam its programmes in any part of India. Expectedly, no state government has authority of any kind to regulate content of any television show in any part of this country. Period."

But that is not the final word. Professor S Japhet of the NLSIU says, "The CM is well within jurisdiction to put restrictions on such programmes. He may not require a new law. There are enough provisions under the IPC that can be used to stop harm to public order and morality. It is the Constitution that mandates scientific temper and enquiry. If the CM does make a law, GoI or statutory bodies that manage television content may not pounce on him. Finally, it will be left to the courts to interpret such a law. The BCCC advisory itself is good and indicates that the CM is well within the purview of such a move."
The self-regulatory body of television channels, BCCC, has, on December 10, issued an advisory to television channels on "depiction of occult, superstition, black magic, exorcism and witchcraft in TV programmes." However, it remains silent on astrology-based shows.
The advisory is signed by BCCC chairperson Justice Mukul Mudgal."

Will astrology, vaastu come under Karnataka anti-superstition Bill?

The Hindu September 27 2017 wrote:
After facing flak from various quarters for dragging its feet on bringing law against superstitious practices, the Karnataka government is expected to discuss the draft of the anti-superstition Bill in the Cabinet on Wednesday.

The key question now is if those cheating people in the name of astrology or vaastu would attract punishment under the proposed law.

After several rounds of discussion with experts, the government is said to have “toned down” the Bill that envisages banning evil practices on the lines of the law in Maharashtra. It is reliably learnt that the draft Bill is unlikely to include astrology and vaastu, coming under pressure from legislators and some within the Cabinet.

Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs T.B. Jayachandra said, “The issue of either banning or regulating vaastu and astrology was discussed but no decision was taken.”
Chief minister Siddaramaiah continues to be haunted by crows.

When Kerala CM Vijayan was delivering his inaugural address, a crow started fluttering over the stage and finally sat on a branch of a tree right above Siddaramaiah. Within no time, the bird's droppings fell on the CM's dhoti. The incident created a flutter and the CM sought help from people next to him.

It may be recalled that Siddaramaiah changed his Toyota Fortuner a few months ago after a crow sat on it near his official residence in Bengaluru.

such kind of Tv astro shows are not paid by channels but the bogus astrologers buying the time slots and telecasting their shows for the purpose of advertisement. If karnataka CM try to ban such kind of astro shows telecasted by channels, the channel heads may raise a big agitation against the government,.why bcz they are going to lose lakhs of rupees revenue from the bogus astrologers as advertisements.

Well, the most dangerous of all superstitions is the belief/claim that politicians work for common man!

Absolutely, this issue is the most burning issue of the present time in Karnataka. More than congestion, pollution, farmer suicide ..
I think govt should go one step further and create panels that would approve astrologers, and only those astrologers should be allowed to come on TV. That way, the general public will not be exposed to "bad" astrologers and will benefit from govt approved astrologers.

What should be the selection criteria for Government in finalizing panels of Astrologers? Then again corruption creeps in. Better is people choose themselves who is credible, it is democracy. When going gets tough, tough gets going.
Govt intervention can spoil the system as ruling party sponsored Astrologers gets headway and no depth of knowledge bears consideration.

Why is it that, despite being a divine science that finds mention in the Upanishads, Astrology is considered superstition? What is in astrology's chart that gives it such bad repute?

If I am not mistaken, the present Karnataka CM is an ardent believer in astrology :)
Guess there has been a change in dasha of astrology's chart....
