in my opinion:

karma which is on the grosser level can be altered through will power, for example by switching our attention to something else in the case of bad habits like cigarette smoking, etc.

but karma which is more on the subtle level, is like a potential or tendency of one's personality would be much more difficult to change, for example, sex preference.
