An information needed in urgency!

Post by Vivek Surya » 03 Apr 2018

नमः शिवाय,
Let's say a person died in the 2nd day of waxing Moon phase (Shukla Dwiteeya) in Adhika Jyeshta Maasam! in the year 1999, this 2nd day of waxing moon happened on May 17th 1999. So, in this year when are we suppose to perform Pindapradaana Karma?! Brahmins are confusing, saying we're not suppose to perform Pindapradaanam in Adhika Jyeshta Maasam, I felt it as meaningless, instead we should perform in Nija Jyeshta Maasam it seems
& In this year also we've Adhika Jyeshta Maasam, 2nd day of waxing Moon phase starts from May 16th 2:39 P.M. on wards it ends at May 17th 11:27 A.M.

So,I request you to tell on which date this Pindapradaana Karma should be performed?! Is it in Nija Jyeshta or in Adhika Jyeshta?!

And also I wish to know, why is this Jyeshta month contains excess dates, any specific Astrological reason, please?
Thanks a lot!

VS- your question seems to be simple but the answer for it is a bit vast.so i want to give as little reasons as possible both scriptures wise and astrological wise too.

Adhika Maasa is the most sacred month dedicated to the most sacred person Lord Vishnu who is the Masa Niyamaka (Governing Lord) of Adhika masam in the name Purushottama. That’s why Adhika Masam is also referred as Purushottama Maasa.Adhika means "great" in terms of scriptures and "extra" in terms of general meaning. In solar calendar terminology,it is termed as "intercalary month".

Nithya Karma, Sharavathi [Amavasya (Darsha), Ugadi, Manvaadi] related Pithru karma should be performed both in Adhika Masa as well as in Nija Masa.

If regular annual ceremony of a deceased (Prathisaamvatsareeka Shraddha) falls during the month when Adhika Masam occurs it should be performed in Adhika Masam provided concerned Pithru had expired during Adhika Masam. Otherwise it should be performed only during Nija Masam.

Also means to say that, in case the deceased had expired in Nija Masam in normal course Shraddha should be performed during Nija Masam and not in the Adhika Masam.

In case Adhika Masam coincides with Maasika (monthly) ceremonies during the first year of Pithru’s death, the concerned Masika shraddha should be performed twice, both in Adhika masam as well as in Nija masam.

In case, 12th month (maasika) ceremony coincides with Adhika Masam then that Maasika ceremony should be performed twice both in Adhika Masa as well as in Nija Masha and the first annual ceremony (Prathama-Aabdeeka) should be performed in the 14th month.

In case Adhika Masam coincides with Dasa Dina Karma all the related ceremonies including Sapindikarana should be performed during Adhika Masam only.

In case first annual ceremony (Prathama Aabdeeka) of the deceased falls during Adhika Masam, it should be performed during Adhika Masam only even though they had expired during Nija Masam.

In case Pitru Paksha falls during Adhika Masam?

If Adhika Masam occurs during Bhadrapada Masam, then Mahalaya Shraddha that is required to be performed during the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) of Bhadrapada masam has to be performed twice both in Adhika masam as well as in Nija Masam.

Precisely, an Adhika Masam occurs when there are two New Moons in a Solar Month and there will be no Sun’s transit or Sankramana in that Lunar month. In such a situation we find Sun transit or Sankramana happening just before and just after the Adhika Masam.

science behind it as follows-

A Lunar month with no Sun transit or Sankramana is referred to as Adhika Masam or Mala Maasam. In other words an Adhika Masam is a Lunar month during which there will be no Surya Sankramana or solar transit. Therefore, when Adhika masam occurs, Sun’s stay in a particular zodiac sign will be slightly longer than the duration of that Lunar month. in order to synchronize the Lunar months with Luni-Solar calendar and to keep pace with the seasons, our ancient seers have formulated a concept or technique of restraining Lunar months and devised an intercalary month for the Lunar Calendar. Thus, as and when there is an accumulation of recession by about 30 days, a Lunar month is added to the year. This extra month known as Adhika Masam occurs at regular intervals of 32 or 33 solar months to maintain the balance between Solar and Lunar Calendars.

Though theoretically occurrence of Adhika Masam as per its arithmetic is assumed as once in every 32 or 33 months, in practice, its incidence before or later than the scheduled time cannot be ruled out. This is due to the variations in the velocity of the movement of Sun and Moon across the zodiac which keeps fluctuating. Thus it can be seen that an intercalary month (Adhika Masa) occurs once in two/three years in the normal course.Generally, Adhika Masa occurs in the period from Chitra to Ashwayuja the first seven months of the Hindu Lunar Calendar. Adhika masam is applicable only for followers of Lunar calendar (Chandramana) and not as per Solar Calendar (Souramana).

its astrological importance will be explained when that times comes. For time being your first part of the query answered in detail.
