Here's an interesting way of reading a chart.
Suppose in a chart Sun is weak and/or afflicted, one may ask the question, "what was done in the past life to have afflicted Sun now?
Probably the person ill-treated his/her father in the past life. Therefore, that person has to be punished by Sun (who is the natural signification of father) in this life.
Now the course of action to follow becomes immediately clear. That person needs to treat his/her father well in this life.
Therefore, the chart becomes not so much a predictor of future circumstances but an action plan to following future.

To summarize, a good application of astrology is to study the chart to determine debts of past lifetimes and then use this information to take corrective action.
